Spatial analysis of HIV-TB co-clustering in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death for individuals infected with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Conversely, HI … presence of high HIV prevalence among the fishing communities of Lake Victoria and the presence of refugees and internally displaced people camps, respectively. The consistent cold spot observed in eastern Uganda and around Kasese could be explained by low HIV prevalence in communities with circumcision tradition. CONCLUSIONS: This study makes a signific …

EAPB0503: An Imiquimod analog with potent in vitro activity against cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic infection classified by the WHO as one of the most uncontrolled spreading neglected diseases. Syria is endemic for Leishmania tropica and Leishmania major, causing CL in the Eastern Mediterranean. The large-scale displacement of Syrian refugees exacerbated the spread of CL into neighboring countries. Therapeutic interventions against CL include local, systemic and physical treatments. The high risk for drug-resistance to current treatments stresses the need for new therapies. Imiquimod is an immunomodulatory drug with a tested efficacy against L. maj…

The changing epidemiology of human African trypanosomiasis among patients from nonendemic countries--1902-2012.

BACKGROUND: Although human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is uncommon among patients from non-endemic countries (NEC), there has been an increase in the number of cases reported in recent years. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed. The number of incoming tourists to HAT endemic countries was obtained from the United Nations World Tourism Organization. All HAT cases diagnosed in patients from NEC were included. Immigrants and refugees were excluded. We compared patients during and after the colonial period, and analyzed the relationship between the number of incoming tr…

Human African trypanosomiasis in non-endemic countries (2000-2010).

BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) can affect travelers to sub-Saharan Africa, as well as migrants from disease endemic countri … ty were in second stage. Patients affected were expatriates living in DECs for extended periods and refugees or economic migrants from DECs. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of HAT in travelers and migrants, albeit low, cannot be overlooked. In non-DECs, rarity, nonspecific symptoms, and lack of knowledge and awareness in health staff make diagnosis difficult. Misdi …

Ethnicity, self reported psychiatric illness, and intake of psychotropic drugs in five ethnic groups in Sweden.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study hypothesises that the presumed increased risk of self reported longstanding psychiatric illness and intake of psychotropic drugs among Iranian, Chilean, Turkish, and Kurdish adults, when these groups are compared with Polish adults, can be explained by living alone, poor acculturation, unemployment, and low sense of coherence. DESIGN: Data from a national sample of immigrants/refugees, who were between the ages of 20-44 years old, upon their arrival in Sweden between 1980 and 1989. Unconditional logistic regression was used in the statistical modelling. SETTING: S…

Does tuberculosis after kidney transplantation follow the trend of tuberculosis in general population?

Despite improvement in graft survival, infection continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality after kidney transplantation. We analyzed the clinical courses and outcomes of 16 transplanted patients with positive cultures for mycobacterium tuberculosis. In the course of a 20 year period, there were 13 cases of tuberculosis registered that developed in 456 patients who underwent kidney transplantation in our department, and in three refugees transplanted in other centers (a prevalence of 3.13%). Five of them developed tuberculous infections during 1997. Five patients had residua…

[250 years of English psychiatry].

The history of British psychiatry is considered from five main viewpoints: clinical practice, the institutional basis, the legislative basis … here the main contribution was through translation and biography, but some leading analysts came as refugees in the 1930s-as did other psychiatrists from central Europe. Another important influence was that of Adolf Meyer at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, particularly through Sir Aubrey Lewis; physical treatment methods also came to Britain from Euro …

Changing Patterns of HCV Genotype Distribution in a Migration-Affected Region of Turkey: A Retrospective Hospital-Based Study (2014-2021).

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is still a major worldwide health concern. It is distinguished by a high degree of genetic variation that affects the course of the illness and the effectiveness of treatment. The epidemiological profile of HCV is prone to rapid change in areas where there is significant human migration, like Turkey. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of long-term migration on local viral diversity by analyzing the distribution and temporal trends of HCV genotypes among Turkish citizens and asylum seekers in Kayseri, Turkey, over an eight-year period. From Ja

Displacement-related stressors in a Sudanese war-affected community; identifying the impact of war exposure and ongoing stressors on trauma symptom severity: a national multi-center cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan that started April 2023 resulted in over 8 millions internally displaced persons (IDPs), in addition to the already previously displaced 3.8 millions. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most documented mental health problems among IDPs. Additionally, factors such as personal safety concerns and financial losses have been identified as potential stressors contributing to the development of PTSD. Our study aimed to understand the relationship between displacement-related stressors and trauma symptom severity. METHODS: This was a

Prevalence and patterns of antiretroviral resistance in HIV-infected Latin American asylum seekers.

The recent increase in Latin American asylum seekers in Spain has been accompanied by a rise in HIV diagnoses. However, their clinical profile, particularly regarding antiretroviral resistance, is poorly characterized. We aimed to assess the prevalence of resistance-associated mutations and their impact on treatment management in this vulnerable population. We conducted a prospective cohort study (2022-2023) with six-month follow-up, enrolling Latin American asylum seekers living with HIV, attending their first HIV consultation in Spain. Individuals with a viral load > 1,000 copies/mL, regardl

Barriers to safe abortion care among internally displaced persons in Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ethiopia face significant barriers to safe abortion care, influenced by socio-cultural, economic, and structural factors, alongside widespread sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). A cross-sectional study was conducted in four IDP camps in the Amhara and Oromia regions from April to July 2024, involving 1,452 randomly selected women. SGBV was reported by 16.6%, with 36.9% of cases perpetrated by security forces. Of the participants, 5.8% had undergone abortion, and 1.7% had induced abortions in the camps. Fewer than half of women in IDP camps reported

Primary Care Screening Methods and Outcomes for Asylum Seekers in New York City.

Effective screening in primary care among asylum-seekers in the US is critical as this population grows. This study aimed to evaluate disease prevalence and screening methods in this high-risk group. Two hundred ten new clients from 51 countries, plus Tibet, who were accepted into a program for asylum seekers from 2012 to 2014 were included. Screening rates and outcomes for infectious, non-communicable, and mental illnesses were evaluated. Screening rates were highest for PTSD, depression, hepatitis B, and latent tuberculosis. Seventy-one percent of clients screened positive for depression and

Prevalence of mental disorders among detained asylum seekers in deportation arrest in Switzerland and validation of the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen BJMHS.

BACKGROUND: Though slowly growing, knowledge about prisoners detained for having violated an Alien Act is still marginal and most studies involve detained asylum seekers in the USA and Australia. Little is known about prevalence rates of mental health disorders in such a population. The Brief Jail Mental Health Screening BJMHS has been demonstrated in other prison populations as a valid screening for serious mental illness. AIM: The aims of this study were to describe prevalence rates for mental disorders according to ICD-10 and to validate the BJMHS for this population. METHODS: 80 inmates
