OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether dilated fundus examination is necessary on patients presenting to clinic with lid complaints and normal vision.
METHODS: Patients with lid complaints were recruited from general and emergency clinics. Patients with visual symptoms or previous ophthalmic history were excluded. Subjects were examined by a junior ophthalmologist with slit-lamp biomicroscopy and Goldmann tonometry. Dilated posterior segment examination was performed with a Volk lens and the peripheral retina was examined with a three-mirror contact lens.

PURPOSE: To outline the clinical features and surgical treatment of patients with familial and sporadic (simplex) forms of congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles (CFEOM) from 2 countries, and to classify them according to phenotype and mode of inheritance.

PURPOSE: The tolerability, safety, and visual comfort of two new tear film substitutes were studied in a phase I clinical study.
METHODS: Two amphipathic lipids (phosphatidylcholine, cholesterol, sphingomyelin, and gangliosides) containing solutions (I and II) of well-defined stoichiometry, free of preservatives, were studied in 20 eyes of 20 healthy volunteers (age range, 26-32 years) in a randomized, double-blind, crossover study. PURPOSE: To present our experience with the use of preserved human amniotic membrane on patients with epiphora caused by conjunctivochalasis.
METHODS: Twelve patients, seven women and five men, ages ranging from 56 to 72 years (mean, 61 years) were referred to our Cornea Service with chronic epiphora. In all patients, no punctal ectropion was present, the lacrimal pathway was patent, and the dye disappearance test was abnormal. All patients had already undergone various therapies including multiple irrigations of the lacrimal system, antibiotic drops, steroid drops, and artificial tear drops.
