The records of 142 patients with generalized autoimmune myasthenia gravis who had been treated with steroids as the single immunosuppressive agent, collected at regular intervals, were employed for a retrospective evaluation. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed after 24 months; the data from the 6th and 12th months were also considered. A 57-year-old man with Masaoka stage III thymic carcinoma received two cycles of cisplatin/docetaxel and 60 Gy irradiation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the ability of tacrolimus to reduce the corticosteroid dose in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and the drug's safety in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group study.
METHODS: Patients being treated with oral prednisolone at doses equivalent to 10-20 mg/day, and with stable symptoms, were randomised to tacrolimus or placebo in a 28-week double-blind study. The dose of corticosteroid was tapered with the procedures specified in the protocol. The primary efficacy endpoint was the mean daily prednisolone dose given in the last 12 weeks of the study.

Radiation-induced osteosarcoma is a rare complication after irradiation of primary malignancies. In the chest wall, it is usually secondary to radiotherapy for breast cancer or lymphoma. We report a rare case of radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the sternum after mediastinal irradiation of a thymoma. A case of thymic squamous cell carcinoma producing interleukin-6 (IL-6) is reported. C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC) count, and serum IL-6 had been elevated, and normalized immediately after tumorectomy. IL-6 in the culture supernatant from the tumor was significantly elevated and the expression of IL-6 mRNA was demonstrated in the tumor by a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction method. Immunohistochemical study demonstrated that tumor cells were stained positive with an anti-IL-6 antibody. IL-6 derived from the tumor cells reflected the increase CRP and WBC counts.

Ten patients with atrophy of the tongue, from a group of 752 with generalized acquired myasthenia gravis (MG), were studied. Tongue atrophy developed late in the majority of patients and was accompanied by tongue paresis (70% of the cases) and eventually associated to atrophy of other muscles of the palate, especially the uvula. This paper describes the course of infection and certain pathological changes in thymus-deprived and normal CBA mice after oral infection with Trichinella spiralis. Greater morbidity was found among deprived mice and deaths due to trichiniasis occurred solely in this group. Thymic typical and atypical carcinoids are rare and appear to be more aggressive than similar tumors in other sites. We retrospectively analyzed a group of biomarkers that hold therapeutic and prognostic utility, in 27 of these tumors. We describe 250 cases of thymoma with emphasis on World Health Organization (WHO) histologic subtyping. The patients were 120 males and 130 females between the ages of 13 and 92 years. Surgical resection was performed, and histologic material was evaluated in every case. Macroscopically, the tumors varied in size from 3 to 20 cm in greatest diameter; about 12% were encapsulated, and about 88% were invasive tumors. A minimum of 5 sections of tumor was evaluated.
