Reflex adrenergic inhibition of gastric motility by nociceptive intestinal stimulation and peritoneal irritation in the cat.

The effects on gastric motility of nociceptive stimulation to jejunum and colon were studied in vagotomized anesthetized cats. Mechanical nociceptive stimulation and diathermy of the jejunum and proximal colon elicited reflex gastric inhibition that was significantly more pronounced than that obtained by stimulation of distal colon. Similarly differentiated reflex responses were induced by electric afferent stimulation of nerves from the respective intestinal segments. Strong nociceptive stimuli from the abdominal cavity, induced by peritonitis, completely blocked vagal excitatory influences o

Central mechanism of vasopressin-induced changes in antidiuretic hormone release.

1. Intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) administered vasopressin (0.001-1.0 u) in dogs anaesthetized with chloralose produced adose-dependent increase in urine flow with a concomitant decrease in the levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in jugular vein blood. 2. Higher doses of vasopressin (1.5-2.0 u, i.c.v) on the other hand had an antidiuretic effect and produced an increase in blood ADH level. 3. Pretreatment (i.c.v.) with a beta-adrenoceptor antagonist completely blocked the diuretic response of low doses of vasopressin (i.c.v.) but did not influence the antidiuretic response obtained with h

Serum triiodothyronine and reverse triiodothyronine concentrations after surgical operation.

Serum-triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations fell rapidly after surgery in six out of seven initially euthyroid patients. Simultaneous increases in reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) concentrations suggested that the peripheral monodeiodination of thyroxine (T4) proceeds by an alternative pathway in the postoperative period.

Onset of and recovery from diving bradycardia in ducks.

1. No evidence was found of a ;postural reflex' in ducks. Neither the position of the head nor the water temperature affected the cardiac response to diving.2. In ducks with access to air through a tracheal cannula, submersion did not invariably cause apnoea until the water level reached the glottis. Heart rate was closely related to respiratory frequency, and bradycardia did not occur during submersion unless there was a reduction in respiratory frequency or a cessation of ventilation altogether.3. When apnoea and bradycardia did occur during submersion, the first inspiration upon surfacing w

Role of the vagus nerve on the development of postoperative ileus.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative ileus involves reflex inhibition of intestinal motility within hours after surgery and a subsequent intestinal i … f intestinal motility and afferent nerve discharge at baseline were not different following chronic vagotomy, alpha-bungarotoxin or sham operation. Maximum afferent discharge to 5-HT following alpha-bungarotoxin was comparable to sham controls, while the response was reduced in chronically vagotomized animals (p < 0.05). Maximum afferent nerve discharge to …

Non-invasive neurally adjusted ventilatory assist in rabbits with acute lung injury.

OBJECTIVE: Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist uses the electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi)--a pneumatically-independent signal--to control the timing and pressure of the ventilation delivered, and should not be affected by leaks. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether NAVA can deliver assist in synchrony and proportionally to EAdi after extubation, with a leaky non-invasive interface. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective, controlled experimental study in an animal laboratory. ANIMALS: Ten rabbits, anesthetized, mechanically ventilated. INTERVENTIONS: Following lung injury, the f

Anaesthetic agents suppress basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. Are intramural neurons involved?

Anaesthetized animals are often used in studies of gastric secretion. We have examined the effect of anaesthetics on the acid output in gastric fistula rats and pylorus-ligated rats, both vagally intact and denervated. Diethyl ether, chloral hydrate, and mebumal effectively reduced both basal and stimulated acid output in fistula rats. The acid output in pylorus-ligated rats was greatly reduced by the anaesthetics. In vagally denervated rats local nervous reflexes are thought to play an important role in the acid secretory response to pylorus ligation. Anaesthetic drugs suppressed acid output

[Surgical tactics in peptic ulcer hemorrhage].

The article discusses the results of treatment of 256 patients with gastroduodenal hemorrhages. The routine actively temporizing strategy was employed in the treatment of the first group of patients. The total mortality in the group was 13%, postoperative one, 33%. In the second group active surgical strategy was based on the results of recurrent hemorrhage prognosis. The total mortality was 6%, postoperative one, 6.5%. It is concluded that active surgical strategy which is based on prediction of recurrent hemorrhage yields better results of management of patients with ulcerative hemorrhages.

Experience with the esophagogastric devascularization procedure.

Twenty-eight consecutive unselected patients were treated for esophageal varices by means of a modified Sugiura procedure between 1978 and 1985. In accordance with Child's classification, 59% were considered as class A, 11% as class B, and 30% as class C. The etiology of the cirrhosis included alcohol abuse (42%), hepatitis (33%), granulomatous disease (7%), and cryptogenic disease (18%). One patient had extrahepatic portal hypertension from unknown causes. The surgical treatment included esophageal and gastric devascularization in all cases. The average operative time was 4 1/2 hours. The ave

Prevention of ulcer recurrence--medical vs surgical treatment. The physician's view.

What factors should be considered in the choice between medical and surgical treatment of peptic ulcer disease? We would suggest the factors included in Table I. It is our opinion that we have concentrated too much on the recurrence rate, that is on how many of the patients who have a recurrence and not so much on the severity of recurrences in terms of symptoms, duration and influence on ability to work. It is also our firm belief that with regard to costs too much attention has been paid to one small part of the total cost, namely the cost for drugs. The strategy in the choice of the treatme

Haemodynamic effects of the quaternary ammonium compound QX 572 in anaesthetized cats. I. Cardiac chronotropic effects.

The haemodynamic effects of the antiarrhythmic compound, QX 572, have been studied in anaesthetized cats. It was found that QX 572 increased the heart rate and decreased the blood pressure of the cats during the infusion of the drug. A slight increase in blood pressure was seen after the infusion was terminated. The same results have been obtained in patients. Experiments on cats pretreated with propranolol or reserpine showed that infusions of QX 572 caused an increase in heart rate by increasing the sympathetic activity in the cats. It is also shown that changes in vagal tone may contribute

The effect of posture on the emptying of the intrathoracic vagotomized stomach.

Ten patients were studied at periods ranging from 6 months to 25 years after oesophagogastrostomy and gastric drainage. Gastric emptying studies and overnight gastric aspirates in both the supine and erect positions were carried out. Evidence was found in these patients of increased duodenogastric reflux and poor gastric emptying in the supine posture. All of the patients had gastritis, and some had gastric mucosal ulceration. These findings have led to the conclusion that in the supine posture the combination of duodenogastric reflux and poor gastric emptying leads to gastric mucosal damage.
