Patient-reported outcome measures in cataract surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of visual function and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the improvement in vision-related quality of life, as measured by validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) (NEI-VFQ-14, NEI-VFQ-25) after cataract surgery, and to explore sources of variability in outcomes. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL were searched, with supplementary grey‑literature screening, for primary studies reporting preoperative and postoperative PROM scores following cataract surgery. Eligible instruments were the Visual Function Index (NEI-VFQ-14), National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI‑VFQ‑25/‑14), Catquest‑9SF, and rela

Detection and classification of diabetic retinopathy in retinal fundus images using deep spiking Q Network optimized with partial reinforcement optimizer.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) causes abrasions of the retina in humans of various types. These abrasions cause vision loss, and in extreme cases, DR can cause blindness. Due to the lack of resources and expert opinion, the manual method of diagnosing DR is unreliable for timely treatment, and it takes a long time to overcome this issue. In this paper, Detection and Classification of DR in Retinal Fundus Images using Deep Spiking Q Network Optimized with Partial Reinforcement Optimizer (DCDR-RFI-DSQN-PRO) is proposed. Here, the input images are taken from Eye PACS fundus image (EPFI) dataset. The c

Diabetic retinopathy detection via exudates and hemorrhages segmentation using iterative NICK thresholding, watershed, and Chi2 feature ranking.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common eye condition that affects one-third of patients with diabetes, leading to vision loss in both working-age and elderly populations. Early detection and intervention can improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on healthcare. By developing robust computational techniques, we can advance automated systems for screening and managing diabetic retinopathy. Our specific goal is to detect and segment exudates and hemorrhages in fundus images. In this study, we used the iterative NICK thresholding region growing (INRG) method as a basis. To further improve o

Racial disparities in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy treated with pars plana vitrectomy in an underserved population.

BACKGROUND: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a serious microvascular complication of diabetes that can lead to irreversible vision loss. Prior research studies have documented how racial minorities with PDR experience less routine screening, less frequent treatment, and more complications. Although pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a widely used treatment modality for PDR, minimal research is currently available addressing how race impacts surgical presentation and outcomes. METHODS: This study is a retrospective case series involving a sample of patients who underwent PPV for PDR at

The Efficacy of Repetitive Transorbital Alternating Current Stimulation (rtACS) in Patients With Optic Nerve Damage: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Optic nerve disorders significantly contribute to visual impairment with irreversible visual deficits. Current treatments have limited efficacy in resolving chronic visual deficits, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies. Neurorehabilitation techniques, including repetitive transorbital alternating current stimulation (rtACS), have emerged as promising approaches to restore lost visual function through the ability to modulate brain activity. However, the evidence on the effectiveness of rtACS remains inconclusive, warranting a systematic review to assess its potential as a therapeutic inte

Respiratory Chain Complex I Deficiency in Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: Insights from Ophthalmologic and Molecular Investigations in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) rare disease due to the pathogenic variant of the NADH dehydrogenase enzyme. LHON is characterized by a sudden central vision loss due to focal degeneration of the retinal ganglion cell layer and optic nerve. Symptoms usually appear between the age of 18 and 35 years. Some individuals present the mtDNA mutations but not presented the LHON clinical features. The heteroplasmic or homoplasmic character of the mutations among patients explains why they develop the disease or not even though they carry the pathogeni

Selection of pre-trained weights for transfer learning in automated cytomegalovirus retinitis classification.

Cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) is a significant cause of vision loss. Regular screening is crucial but challenging in resource-limited settings. A convolutional neural network is a state-of-the-art deep learning technique to generate automatic diagnoses from retinal images. However, there are limited numbers of CMVR images to train the model properly. Transfer learning (TL) is a strategy to train a model with a scarce dataset. This study explores the efficacy of TL with different pre-trained weights for automated CMVR classification using retinal images. We utilised a dataset of 955 retinal

Automated, Vision-Based Goniometry and Range of Motion Calculation in Individuals With Suspected Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes/Generalized Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders: A Comparison of Pose-Estimation Libraries to Goniometric Measurements.

Generalized joint hypermobility (GJH) often leads clinicians to suspect a diagnosis of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), but it can be difficult to objectively assess. Video-based goniometry has been proposed to objectively estimate joint range of motion in hyperextended joints. As part of an exam of joint hypermobility at a specialized EDS clinic, a mobile phone was used to record short videos of 97 adults (89 female, 35.0 ± 9.9 years old) undergoing assessment of the elbows, knees, shoulders, ankles, and fifth fingers. Five body keypoint pose-estimation libraries (AlphaPose, Detectron, MediaPipe

Chromatic Pupillometry Methods for Assessing Photoreceptor Health in Retinal and Optic Nerve Diseases.

The pupillary light reflex is mediated by melanopsin-containing intrinsically-photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which also receive input from rods and cones. Melanopsin-dependent pupillary light responses are short-wavelength sensitive, have a higher threshold of activation, and are much slower to activate and de-activate compared with rod/cone-mediated responses. Given that rod/cone photoreceptors and melanopsin differ in their response properties, light stimuli can be designed to stimulate preferentially each of the different photoreceptor types, providing a read-out of their f

[Age-related macular degeneration – a challenge for public health care].

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the predominant cause of legal blindness in the population over 50 years of age. The disorder shows exponentially increasing prevalence with age, and the late forms with their vision threatening evolution are found in approximately one third of cases. The late AMD may be purely atrophic and so far untreatable. Or it may be neovascular and exudative, for which medical treatment is available, consisting of repetitive intravitreous injections of Anti-VEGF molecules. The treatment is highly effective in blocking the growth of the pathological vessels and a

Discovery of subtype selective muscarinic receptor antagonists as alternatives to atropine using in silico pharmacophore modeling and virtual screening methods.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) have five known subtypes which are widely distributed in both the peripheral and central nervous system for regulation of a variety of cholinergic functions. Atropine is a well known muscarinic subtype non-specific antagonist that competitively inhibits acetylcholine (ACh) at postganglionic muscarinic sites. Atropine is used to treat organophosphate (OP) poisoning and resulting seizures in the warfighter because it competitively inhibits acetylcholine (ACh) at the muscarinic cholinergic receptors. ACh accumulates due to OP inhibition of acetylcholine
