Objective To analyze the serological characteristics and clinical significance of IgG anti-D and anti-C combined antibodies and anti-E and anti-c combined antibodies in patients negative for RhDC and RhEc antigens. Methods The clinical data and laboratory results of 12 cases with two types of irregular antibodies were recorded and analyzed, including age, sex, history of blood transfusion/pregnancy, ABO and RhD blood group identification, Rh antigen typing, irregular antibody screening, antibody-specific identification, absorption-elution tests, antibody titer determination and cross-matching

Although nearly all domestic shorthair and longhair cats have type-A blood (greater than 99%), the frequency of blood type B in various feline breeds ranges from 0 to 59%. All blood-type-B cats have strong natural alloantibodies, predominantly of the IgM class, whereas blood-type-A cats have low alloantibody titers of the IgG and IgM classes. We therefore studied the efficacy and safety of transfusing 20 ml of matched and mismatched 14C-potassium cyanate-labeled blood to cats. In autologous and allogeneic matched transfusions of blood-type-A and type-B cats, the half-life of labeled erythrocyt

The Rh blood type has 57 antigens, including D, C, E, c, and e. This blood type is clinically significant, alongside the ABO blood type. The anti-f(ce) antibody is an unexpected antibody that targets an antigen composed of the c and e antigens. We would like to report a case of the anti-f(ce) antibody discovered during an investigation of an ABO discrepancy. A 63-year-old man diagnosed with liver cell carcinoma was hospitalized for endoscopic variceal ligation due to esophageal varix. To prepare for the possibility of transfusion during the procedure, an ABO blood type test was conducted, resu

ABO-incompatible allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) can be complicated by poor red cell engraftment and hemolysis, both mediated by isoagglutinins. Anecdotally, isoagglutinins indicates an activation of donor's immunity or even relapse. Consequently, the routine monitoring of isoagglutinins could help physicians to predict the risk of complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the time to disappearance and appearance of isoagglutinins after ABO-incompatible allogeneic HSCT. In a one-year follow-up, data of 136 ABO-incompatible hematopoietic stem cell (HSC

P is a high-prevalence antigen present in 99.9 percent of the population and is fully developed at birth. P- individuals form naturally occurring antibodies against P, which are often of immunoglobulin (Ig)M and/or IgG type, very potent in complement activation, and able to cause serious intravascular hemolytic transfusion reactions. Some people with anti-P have the rare P1 k phenotype, which lacks P in the presence of P1 and Pk. Blood transfusion in patients with anti-P is challenging, as is described here. A male patient without a history of blood transfusion was admitted for a planned cardi

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common infectious pathogen in kidney transplant patients. Here, we present a case of CMV esophagitis with antigenemia, that developed within 3 days of kidney transplantation, a timeline generally considered to be too early for development of a CMV infection. Intense immunosuppressive therapy for desensitization in ABO-incompatibility or in the presence of donor-specific antibody can increase the risk for significant opportunistic infection immediately after or even before transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Situs inversus is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the complete inversion of thoracic and abdominal organs. Liver transplantation in such patients or from donors in situs inversus is technically challenging because of the reversed anatomic structures. A small number of successful liver transplantation cases concerning situs inverus in either recipients or donors have been recently reported with different graft position and orientation. Here we reported an extremely rare case of liver retransplantation from an ABO incompatible situs inversus donor to an adult situs inversu

ABO allo-immunization is the most frequent hemolytic disease of the newborn and ABO incompatibility is present in 15-25 % of pregnancies. True ABO alloimmunization occurs in approximately one out of 150 births. Intensity is generally lower than in RhD allo-immunization. We report on three cases showing that ABO allo-immunization can lead to severe hemolytic disease of the newborn with potentially threatening hyperbilirubinemia and complications. Early diagnosis and adequate care are necessary to prevent complications in ABO incompatibility. A direct antiglobulin test is the cornerstone of diag

Kidney exchange donation programs offer a good solution to help patients with a willing, but incompatible living kidney donor. Literature shows that blood type O patients are less likely to be selected for transplantation within a living exchange donation program. 'Altruistically unbalanced donation' could help these blood type O patients: one donor-recipient pair is incompatible (e.g. A-donor > O-recipient) and the other pair is compatible, but not identical (e.g. O-donor > A-recipient). Exchanging these kidneys would result in two compatible living donor kidney transplants. We studied whethe

Auto antiA1 and anti H was found in the serum of a patient admitted in this hospital for intracardiac repair of Ventricular Septal defect (VSD). Blood was grouped as A1 positive with discrepant cell and serum grouping due to auto anti A1 and anti H. No blood units were compatible for the patient. 17 A1, 3 A2 and 8 O group blood units were crossmatched and found incompatible at 37 degrees C and A2 and O at 25 degrees C--as the patient required surgery at hypothermia. Surgery was postponed. Antibody status was reviewed after 4 months. The thermal amplitude of auto anti H had changed by then but

Antenatal haemolysis in association with ABO incompatibility occurs very rarely. Two cases of hydrops fetalis in black infants caused by anti-B haemolysins are reported. The greater severity of ABO incompatibility in black African peoples may have important implications for antibody screening in this ethnic group.

We report a pregnancy complicated by anti-B isoimmunization that resulted in fetal ascites, anemia, hepatomegaly, and polyhydramnios. A previous pregnancy in the same patient was complicated by neonatal ABO incompatibility. A review of the obstetric literature suggests that ABO incompatibility may cause severe fetal anemia, especially in patients with type O blood or a previous history of ABO incompatibility of the newborn.

Between 1980-1986 seven patients underwent AB0-major incompatible bone marrow transplantation. Incompatible anti-A and anti-B antibodies could be decreased by the plasma exchange from titers 8-256 down to 0-8. Our practice combined with additional depletion of erythrocytes from marrow allowed to transplant all patients successfully, however, one patient demonstrated an acute haemolytic reaction during infusion of marrow. Plasma exchange was fairly well tolerated, however, 4 patients developed slight urticarial reactions. Both thrombocytopenic patients overcompensated the platelet loss caused b

The limited value of the antiglobulin phase of the cross match when a careful antibody screening is performed was demonstrated by analyzing 73,407 compatibility tests for 23,857 patients. By the blood grouping and screening of these patients, 178 cases were detected with unexpected blood group antibodies that had not been previously observed. Unexpected antibodies were detected in an additional 13 patients by the saline phase of the cross-match. In addition, the antiglobulin phase disclosed only one patient with a very weak anti-Lea and two patients whose sera gave doubtful reactions, possibly

ABO incompatibility of red blood cells leads to brisk complement-mediated lysis, particularly in the setting of red cell transfusion. The ABO blood group is the most clinically significant blood group because of preformed immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies to ABO blood group antigens (isohemagglutinins) in everyone except group AB individuals. In addition to transfusion, ABO incompatibility can cause hemolysis in hematopoietic and solid organ transplantation, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and intravenous immunoglobulin infusion. It is important to prevent ABO incompatibility when po
