BACKGROUND: Patients with small bowel injuries (SBI) in abdominal trauma have no clear clinical or radiological signs on initial examination. This leads to delay in appropriate surgical interventions with consequent high morbidity and mortality. In this paper we demonstrate the role of video-assisted laparoscopy (VAL) in management of such patients.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: 819 patients with SBI were evaluated retrospectively between 1994 and 2003. The mechanism of the trauma was blunt in 146 (17.8%) patients and stab wounds in 640; routine investigations and VAL were used for triage of the sub

Results of immune status examination on day 1-2 and 4-8 after operation in 217 patients with penetrating gunshot and stab-incised wounds of thorax and abdomen were analyzed. Correlation between immunogram and volume of acute hemorrhage was studied. Types of immunograms characteristic of good and complicated postoperative period were determined, their frequency was estimated, that permits to perform substantiated and timely special correction for acceleration of immunorehabilitation and prevention of infectious complications.

The efficacy of dynamic computed tomography in assessment of renal, intra-abdominal, and retroperitoneal organ injuries is analyzed in some 444 patients. This technique contributed most valuable information toward the diagnosis of such coexistent injuries in patients who sustained blunt trauma. CT identified associated abdominal or retroperitoneal organ injuries in 85% of the patients (277 of 324), clinical examination in only 26%. CT proved invaluable for assessment of injury to bowel and mesentery, pancreas, and retroperitoneal vascular structures, giving rise to hematomas. CT diagnosed all

BACKGROUND: We report on a patient with a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) who developed abdominal pain due to spinothalamic tract (STT) injuries revealed by diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old female patient suffered head trauma resulting from a backward fall. While bathing at a public bathhouse, she fell backward and struck the occipital area of her head against the floor. After the head trauma, she experienced pain in the abdomen and in both hands and feet. She underwent evaluations including conventional brain MRI, abdominal and pelvic ultrasonography, a

AIMS: Some pregnant women avoid vehicle driving owing to the risk of contact between their protruding abdomen and steering wheel. This study was performed to determine whether abdominal protrusion in late-term pregnant car users affects the occurrence and severity of abdominal injuries in motor vehicle collisions using a national crash database.
METHODS: The National Automotive Sampling System/Crashworthiness Data System was used to analyse maternal background, collision characteristics, outcome and Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) scores for the body regions of all persons involved in the coll…

Our purpose was to assess the prevalence of liver injuries as well as concomitant injuries to the liver and spleen in patients with blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma, and to determine the prevalence, management and outcome of active bleeding and contained vascular injuries (CVI; pseudoaneurysm/AV-fistula) seen on admission CT. A retrospective, single-center, longitudinal cohort study with nine-year data (2013-2021) of all ≥ 15-year-old patients with severe blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma and an ICD code for liver and/or splenic trauma. CT examinations were identified. Radiology, medi

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic injuries are rare and often difficult to diagnose, especially when caused by unusual penetrating mechanisms. Spear gun trauma is exceptionally uncommon, with very few cases reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man sustained an accidental spear gun injury to the left iliac fossa during spearfishing. He was hemodynamically stable on admission. The spear trajectory extended toward the upper abdomen. Intraoperative exploration revealed a partial laceration of the pancreatic tail without splenic injury. A distal pancreatectomy with splenic preservation was performed.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal ultrasound (AUS) is increasingly utilized as a diagnostic adjunct in neonates undergoing evaluation for intestinal injuries such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP), volvulus, and intestinal obstruction, which need urgent surgical evaluation and often emergent intervention. However, the interpretability of AUS-defined as the number of explicit documentations of high-risk ultrasound findings (HRF)-varies in radiology reports, potentially influenced by clinical and technical factors.
OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical and technical fac

BackgroundBlunt abdominal aortic injury (BAAI) is rare among traumatic aortic injuries, and further complications of blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI) have never been reported.Case PresentationA man in his 80s presented to our hospital following a motor vehicle accident. Pan-scan contrast-enhanced CT showed a thoracic aortic isthmus injury (Grade III), an abdominal aortic injury (Grade IV) with extravasation of contrast media at the level of the fourth lumbar vertebra. Endovascular abdominal aortic repair was performed on the same day and a thoracic endovascular aortic repair for BTAI was pe

BACKGROUND: The treatment of penetrating abdominal injuries has changed in recent years with more focus on "nonoperative management" (NOM) to avoid unnecessary laparotomies while identifying injuries early. Although the NOM approach is widely used for stab wounds, its effectiveness in managing abdominal gunshot wounds is controversial. NOM of penetrating abdominal injuries is becoming more dependent on hemodynamic stability and improved noninvasive radiological interventions. The role of NOM is significantly underreported and underestimated in developing countries, particularly in fragile and …

BACKGROUND The pediatric population, due to its distinct anatomy and physiology, often presents with unique mechanisms of trauma, leading clinicians to encounter diverse and sometimes unexpected injuries. Whether these injuries result from blunt or penetrating trauma, they may involve intra-abdominal organs in pediatric patients. Additionally, there are occasional occurrences where injuries affect rare sites such as the pylorus in an isolated manner within this age group. Clinicians must be prepared to address a wide range of injury patterns to ensure optimal outcomes for pediatric patients ex

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) occupies a large part of aorta aneurysm, and if there's no timely intervention or treatment, the risks of rupture and death would rise sharply. With the depth of research in AAA, more and more evidence showed correlations between AAA and autoimmune injury. Currently, a variety of bioactive peptides and cells have been confirmed to be related with AAA progression. Despite the tremendous progress, more than half researches were sampling from lesion tissues, which would be difficult to obtain. Given that the intrusiveness and convenience, serological test take adva

Air guns are considered mostly harmless by the public opinion, but projectiles shot from common air guns can penetrate skin and thus able to cause severe, even life-threatening injury. The prevalence of air gun injuries is constantly high, but severe injuries occur rarely. Forensic evaluation of air gun injuries can be challenging since the shot wound characteristics produced by combustion in case of firearm injuries are missing. Despite these difficulties, the topic of air gun injuries is mostly overlooked in forensic literature, and there are no guidelines available which can help the assess

A 16-year-old man presented to our Emergency hospital for a major traumatic scalp injury of pubic and scrotal region; this occurred as a consequence of an autonomous motorcycle accident. Early surgical esploration showed the bilateral section of spermatic cord in correspondence of the abdominal-pelvic tract; a conservative management was adopted and the patient underwent bilateral intratesticular sperm biopsy for cryopreservation. In the presence of extensive scalp injury of the pubic and scrotum skin a early surgical exploration should be performed and the multidisciplinary decision making sh

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy accounts for 0.6 to 4% of all ectopic pregnancies. Due to delays in diagnosis and difficulties in the management of abdominal pregnancy, the risk of mortality is significantly higher than for uncomplicated ectopic pregnancies. A 23 years-old gravida-II, ectopic-I Ethiopian woman was initially managed as a case of missed second trimester abortion. Later on, abdominal ectopic pregnancy was diagnosed with ultrasound and she underwent a laparotomy. Though fetus and placenta was removed successfully without significant hemorrhage, there was inadvertent sigmoid colon
