Vitamin D3 and calcium absorption in the chick.

1. An attempt has been made to locate the site of action of vitamin D(3) as it affects the translocation of calcium across the intestine. 2. Calcium appears to be pumped out of cells by a process dependent on energy from metabolism. 3. The effects of cold, inhibitors and vitamin D(3) on the translocation of calcium by everted sacs of intestine were studied and compared with results obtained in vivo. 4. A model was proposed to explain the results which suggests that vitamin D(3) inhibits a metabolically operated pump that returns calcium from the mucosal cell to the lumen. 5. Some observations

Lung hypoperfusion stimulates liquid absorption in alveoli.

Tissue hypoperfusion is common in clinical settings, but how tissues respond to hypoperfusion on a microphysiological scale is not clear. We … operfusion stimulated a reversal of alveolar liquid transport, from homeostatic liquid secretion to absorption. Specifically, lung perfusion at or near physiological perfusion pressure led to alveolar liquid secretion that depended on the alveolar epithelial cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), Na + -K + -Cl - cotransporters, and the N …

Dietary Iron Absorption: Biochemical and Nutritional Aspects.

Iron is an essential nutrient for most organisms; however, it can also be toxic when present in excess. For this reason, life has evolved complex pathways to tightly control the amount of iron contained within body tissues. Unlike most other nutrients, mammals do not have a regulated excretory mechanism for iron and, therefore, must regulate body iron levels at the point of dietary iron absorption in the proximal small intestine. In this chapter, we will describe the molecules and pathways involved in this important process, including our current understanding of the mechanisms of both heme an…

Antisense oligonucleotides: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.

INTRODUCTION: Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) have emerged as a promising novel drug modality that aims to address unmet medical needs. A record of six ASO drugs have been approved since 2016, and more candidates are in clinical development. ASOs are the most advanced class within the RNA-based therapeutics field. AREAS COVERED: This review highlights the two major backbones that are currently used to build the most advanced ASO platforms - the phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomers (PMOs) and the phosphorothioates (PSs). The absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) prope…

Small Intestinal Phosphate Absorption: Novel Therapeutic Implications.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 15% of adults in the USA. As CKD progresses, urinary phosphate excretion decr … tment. SUMMARY: This review pre-sents recent advances in the understanding of intestinal phosphate absorption and therapeutic implications. Dietary phosphate is absorbed in the intestine through two distinct pathways, paracellular absorption and transcellular transport. Recent evidence indicates that the paracellular route accounts for 65-80% of total phosp …

Surface charge dominated protein absorption on hydrogels.

Soft tissue engineering requires antifouling materials that are biocompatible and mechanically flexible. Conventional hydrogels containing more than 70 wt% water are thus promising antifouling material candidates. However, some hydrogels are difficult to apply in internal body organs because of undesirable protein absorption on their surfaces. Due to the lack of an effective method for observing the true charge densities of hydrogels, the reason why electrostatic interactions dominate protein absorption behavior remains unclear. In this work, we adopt the microelectrode technique (MET) to stud…

EcoFlex Sponge with Ultrahigh Oil Absorption Capacity.

A paraffin microsphere-templated 3D porous EcoFlex sponge was prepared to selectively absorb oil or chemicals from water. The technology for producing this EcoFlex sponge does not need complicated synthesis processes or instruments, and the materials applied in this work are ecofriendly. Therefore, this sponge can be employed in the environmental field. EcoFlex sponges showed high hydrophobicity (contact angle = 140-143°) and oleophilicity. The developed sponge exhibits a porous three-dimensional framework inside with excellent internal connectivity, which contributes both better absorption ca…

Intestinal Phosphorus Absorption in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 10% of adults worldwide. Dysregulation of phosphorus homeostasis which occurs in CKD lead … uld compensate for impaired renal phosphorus excretion by reducing fractional intestinal phosphorus absorption. However, limited studies in CKD animal models and patients with CKD suggest that there may be a break in this homeostatic response where the intestine fails to compensate. As many existing therapies for phosphate management in CKD are aimed at redu …

Two-Photon Absorption in Conjugated Energetic Molecules.

Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was used to investigate the relationship between molecular structure and the one- and two-photon absorption (OPA and TPA, respectively) properties of novel and recently synthesized conjugated energetic molecules (CEMs). The molecular structures of CEMs can be strategically altered to influence the heat of formation and oxygen balance, two factors that can contribute to the sensitivity and strength of an explosive material. OPA and TPA are sensitive to changes in molecular structure as well, influencing the optical range of excitation. We found …
