[Explosion accidents during work with tires and wheel rims].

The object of this work is to draw attention to injuries resulting from explosions caused by work with wheel rims and tyres, the extent of the problem and the safety rules which already exist. Seven illustrative cases are presented. A not inconsiderable but frequently disregarded risk for accidental explosions is present in connection with pumping tyres and repairs of tyres and wheel rims. During the explosions, pressure waves of enormous violence may frequently be released. In connection with four accidental explosions of this type, a total of seven persons were injured. Four of these sustain

An unusual cause of accidental hanging in a toddler.

Accidental hanging in children, although uncommon, has been reported worldwide. We report a case of a toddler who was brought to our hospital with an alleged history of hanging with his head trapped in-between the railings of a balcony. He became unconscious and developed seizures secondary to asphyxial injury and survived. Hanging is an important cause of homicidal and suicidal injury in adults, but in children, it is usually accidental, leading to death because of asphyxia as a result of partial or complete hanging. There is paucity of data in Indian literature regarding accidental hanging i

Local skin reaction following an accidental injection from a BCG vaccine in a healthcare worker.

Exposure to blood-borne pathogens from sharp injuries continue to pose a significant risk to healthcare workers (HCW). The number of sharps injuries sustained by HCW is still unclear, primarily due to under-reporting of events. Healthcare professionals are at risk of sustaining such injuries from hollow-bore needles. Sharps injuries are associated with risk of infection with blood-borne pathogens such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other live organisms. Here we are reporting a case of an adverse reaction in a HCW due to an accidental

Retinal haemorrhage in accidental head trauma in childhood.

Twenty-five children (age range 1.2-14.5 years) who sustained accidental head injury requiring admission to hospital were prospectively examined for evidence of retinal haemorrhage. In no case were retinal haemorrhages detected. It is suggested that accidental head injury seldom results in retinal haemorrhage and that the finding of retinal haemorrhage in a child with a head injury should prompt suspicion of abuse.

Toddler with unexplained multiple bruises.

It is often very challenging for clinicians to distinguish between accidental, intentional, and other causes of bruising such as underlying bleeding disorder in a child with extensive bruising. We present a case of a 17-month-old healthy male who presented to our emergency department with multiple unexplained bruises after an unwitnessed fall and was subsequently diagnosed with congenital vitamin K-dependent clotting factor deficiency. This case illustrates the importance of thorough assessment in evaluating a child with multiple bruises to differentiate accidental from intentional injuries as

Frequency of skeletal injuries in children with inflicted burns.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that inflicted burn injuries in physically abused children occur with a prevalence of approximately 6-20%. Identification of burns of a nonaccidental nature is oftentimes difficult. Underlying skeletal injuries in abusive environments are often overshadowed by the acute burn injury. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the prevalence of inflicted burns and the frequency of associated skeletal injuries in a population from a large children's hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a database of nearly 3,000 children who were assessed for possible abuse from 1997 to 2012, we identi

Pediatric ocular injuries in Lesotho.

One hundred and ten children were evaluated in a prospective study in Lesotho to determine the pattern of pediatric ocular injuries in a developing African country. The pattern was found to be the same as that of developed countries regarding increased incidence in boys, frequency of accidental, self-inflicted and assault injuries, and high incidence of corneal lacerations, traumatic cataracts, hyphemas, and lid lacerations. The pattern differed from developed countries in the absence of injuries due to arrows, airgun pellets (BBs), fireworks, toys and chemical burns, the absence of orbital fr

Pinna Bruising in Children.

Pinna bruising can be associated with abuse, but can also be due to accidental injury. We present 3 cases of pinna bruises and discuss features associated with accidental and nonaccidental injury. Attention to the history, the pattern of bruising, and any other findings identified on a careful, thorough examination will help differentiate the two.

Non-accidental burns in a neurodevelopmentally vulnerable child: A case of institutional child abuse.

Paediatric burns may result from accidental or non-accidental mechanisms, with diagnostic challenges arising when histories suggest dubious accidental causes. We report an 8-year-old boy, placed in a local temple due to longstanding behavioural difficulties, who sustained burns reportedly from hot water spillage. Examination revealed deep burns affecting the left face and neck, lower back, buttocks, perineum and posterior thighs. The distribution and severity were inconsistent with the reported explanation, raising suspicion of non-accidental injury. Multiple facial angiofibromas prompted mult

Risk of professional accidental exposure to biological agents in health care workers: a retrospective analysis carried out in a southern Italian tertiary hospital.

Worldwide the needlestick injuries of health care workers (HCWs) still represent a major health problem. The authors aimed to evaluate the risk of HCW needlestick injuries in a tertiary university hospital in southern Italy in relation to some HCW characteristics (age, sex, professional profile, work department) and the source of infection. All HCWs of the University Hospital "Federico II" in Naples, Italy, attending the Infectious Diseases Unit after potential accidental contact to blood-borne viruses through needlestick injuries were enrolled during a 22-year period. HCWs underwent clinical

Childhood trauma, country report (Thailand).

In Thailand, each year approximately 15,000 people die from accidents, a figure exceeded only by cardiovascular diseases. Motor vehicle accidents (MVA) is the principal cause of death and injuries in children of all ages except preschool group. In 1988 there were 554,452 cases of injuries out of which 10,031 died from MVA. In Bangkok alone MVA accounts for an average of 300 childhood and teenage death and 1,900 cases of injuries each year. Falls, burns and poisonings are relatively high in children less than 4 years old while MVA and injuries from sharp and blunt objects of both accidental and

Experience with the immediate treatment of iatrogenic bladder injuries and the repair of complex vesico-vaginal fistulae by the transvesical approach.

We describe our experience in treating 16 established cases of vesicovaginal fistulae in non-irradiated bladders which followed obstetric and gynecological procedures. The fistulae, most of which were large and complex, were successfully repaired surgically after two to three months intervals, using the O'Connor transvesical technique. The advantages of late correction using the transvesical approach in such cases are discussed. Thirteen additional cases of accidental bladder injuries during obstetric and gynecological procedures are presented. These injuries were successfully treated by immed

Caustic ingestion: CT findings of esophageal injuries and thoracic complications.

Ingestion of caustic substances, whether accidental or for the purpose of suicide, can cause severe lesions of the lips, oral cavity, pharynx, upper gastrointestinal system, and upper airways. In particular, caustic agents could be responsible for severe esophageal injuries resulting in short- and long-term complications. Because of these important clinical implications, timely diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial. In the evaluation of esophageal injuries, thoraco-abdominal computed tomography (CT) is preferable to endoscopy as it avoids the risk of esophageal perforation and allow

Pneumomediastinum, Facial Nerve Injury, and Sialocele Secondary to a Firework Burn to the Cheek: A Case Report.

Fireworks injuries can result in devastating cutaneous burns and may be further complicated in the head and neck region by the presence of specialized deeper structures. In the United States, the head and neck remain the most commonly injured sites, with the majority of these injuries constituting burns. We present an adult patient who suffered an accidental right cheek burn injury and went on to experience a complex pattern of findings including pneumomediastinum, facial nerve palsy, and sialocele formation.
