Adaptations for gas exchange enabled the elongation of lepidopteran proboscises.

The extensive biodiversification of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) is partly attributed to their unique mouthparts (proboscis [Pr]) that can span in length from less than 1 mm to over 280 mm in Darwin's sphinx moths. Lepidoptera, similar to other insects, are believed to inhale and exhale respiratory gases only through valve-like spiracles on their thorax and abdomen, making gas exchange through the narrow tracheae (Tr) challenging for the elongated Pr. How Lepidoptera overcome distance effects for gas transport to the Pr is an open question that is important to understanding how the Pr e

Verification of Hypsibius exemplaris Gąsiorek et al., 2018 (Eutardigrada; Hypsibiidae) application in anhydrobiosis research.

Anhydrobiosis is considered to be an adaptation of important applicative implications because it enables resistance to the lack of water. The phenomenon is still not well understood at molecular level. Thus, a good model invertebrate species for the research is required. The best known anhydrobiotic invertebrates are tardigrades (Tardigrada), considered to be toughest animals in the world. Hypsibius. exemplaris is one of the best studied tardigrade species, with its name "exemplaris" referring to the widespread use of the species as a laboratory model for various types of research. However, av

Hypoxia Conditioning as a Promising Therapeutic Target in Parkinson's Disease?

Several lines of research point to a key role of low oxygen supply (hypoxia) in Parkinson's disease pathogenesis. Although severe hypoxia is detrimental for the brain, physiological adaptations to mild hypoxia are neuroprotective. Herein we discuss, how neuroprotective effects can be induced by hypoxia conditioning and how related approaches have the potential to be harnessed as therapeutic strategies in Parkinson's disease. © 2021 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Adaptation of teleosts to very high salinity.

A number of species of euryhaline teleosts have the remarkable ability to adapt and survive in environments of extreme salinity, up to two or even three times the osmolality of seawater. This review looks at some of the literature describing the adaptive changes that occur, primarily with intestinal water absorption and with the properties of the gill epithelium. While there is much that is still not completely understood, recent work has begun to look at these adaptations at the cellular and molecular level. As with seawater osmoregulation, fish adapting to hypersaline conditions generally in

[Adaptation to central scotoma. III. Visual hallucinations and Charles Bonnet syndrome].

Patients with low vision due to central scotoma may experience complex visual hallucinations, referred to as Charles Bonnet syndrome. The present review reports the current literature on this syndrome and details its frequency, predisposing circumstances, the nature of the hallucinations, and treatments. It also reports the possible occurrence of the syndrome immediately after macular treatments using laser photocoagulation and photodynamic therapy. Patients should be reassured when they experience this syndrome, which is not severe but may be the cause of patient concern.

[Iodine excess and thyroid dysfunction].

Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism may develop during iodine excess. Hypothyroidism occurs mostly in newborns or in elderly patients with underlying autoimmune thyroiditis and is treated by substitutive doses of thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism is of two types. Type I develops in patients with pretoxic thyroid glands, the radioactive tracer uptake remains high. This type is treated with thionamides and potassium perchlorate, as well as, in some cases, by thyroidectomy or iodine 131. Type II develops in non pretoxic thyroid gland, and it evoluates spontaneously towards euthyroidism, in several months,

Animal well-being. II. Stress and distress.

The concepts of stress and distress are integral parts of consideration of animal well-being. Generally, stress refers to a state of threatened homeostasis, but precise clinical definitions, causes, and biological measurements have been controversial and confusing. Numerous factors associated with needs, life in captivity, threatening events, or aversive stimuli may threaten homeostasis. An animal's well-being or quality of life is an individual's internal somatic and mental state that is affected by what it knows or perceives; its feelings and motivational state; the responses to internal or

Modulation of serotonin binding sites in the brain of the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, during adaptation to a short photoperiod.

During the physiological adaptation of the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, to a short photoperiod in autumn the modulation of specific serotonin (5-HT) binding sites of synaptic membranes was investigated in two brain regions, i.e. cerebral cortex and basal brain (CNS without cerebral cortex, cerebellum, pineal gland, and spinal cord). The radioligands [3H]5-HT and [3H]ketanserin were used to characterize total 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 binding sites, respectively. An increase of 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 binding sites was observed in both brain regions within 14 days after reduction of the photoperiod fro

The teamwork of melatonin, ethylene and H2S in abiotic stress adaptation in plants.

Abiotic stresses significantly reduce plant growth and productivity, challenging agricultural sustainability. Plants have evolved adaptive mechanisms to counter these stresses, including antioxidant defences, biochemical changes, and hormonal signaling. Among these, the hormone melatonin (MT) and signaling molecules, ethylene (ET) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), play pivotal roles, interacting in complex ways that modulate stress responses. Melatonin, known for its antioxidant properties, interacts with ET pathways to regulate its production. While ET is essential for stress signaling, its overpro

The incognita of the known: the athlete's heart syndrome.

Long-term athletic activity causes morphological and functional changes in the heart characterized as left ventricle cavity dimension changes, wall thickness and mass increase and rhythm conduction changes. This condition is identified as "athlete's heart syndrome". The changes that are seen clinically occur as a result of physiological adaptation to exercise. Cardiovascular adaptation depends on the exercise's type as well as its frequency, duration and intensity. In the athlete's physical examination, various changes can be seen that are mistaken with pathological conditions. In addition, th

Mitochondria-ER-lipid droplet crosstalk regulates metabolic adaptation to shear stress via VMP1.

Kidney tubular epithelial cells adapt to physiological urinary flow through rapid metabolic remodeling,1,2 but the mechanisms coordinating this response remain poorly understood. Shear stress promotes lipid catabolism and mitochondrial activity in these cells,3,4 but how changes in mitochondrial dynamics contribute to this metabolic adaptation remains poorly understood.5,6,7,8,9 Here, we show that physiological shear stress rapidly remodels mitochondrial morphology in kidney epithelial cells in vitro and in the zebrafish pronephros, characterized by the emergence of a distinct pool of donut-sh

Prosaposin in CNS health and disease, metabolic stress and exercise adaptation.

Prosaposin (PSAP), a highly conserved lysosomal protein and precursor of saposins A-D, has emerged as a key regulator of cellular and central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. Disrupted PSAP trafficking may lead to amyloid protein aggregation with implications for neurodegenerative diseases. In Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), PSAP shows altered expression patterns and pathological co-localization with amyloid aggregates. PSAP variants are linked to multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including synucleinopathies, Gaucher's disease, and metachromatic leukodystrophy. Its l

Synergistic application of taurine and spermidine enhances wheat tolerance to neodymium stress through redox homeostasis, metabolic adjustment, and nutrient regulation.

Neodymium (Nd) contamination is an emerging environmental challenge that threatens crop productivity and food quality in agroecosystems. Although taurine (Tau) and spermidine (Spd) are recognized as important regulators of plant stress responses, their interactive role in mitigating rare-earth-element toxicity remains largely unexplored. The present study evaluated the potential of foliar-applied (Tau 10 mM) and (Spd 1 mM), applied individually and in combination, to alleviate Nd toxicity (150 mg kg-1 NdCl3·6H2O) in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Functional skin adaptation in infancy - almost complete but not fully competent.

Early postnatal life is a period of active functional reorganization and cutaneous physiological adaptation to the extrauterine environment. Skin as the outermost organ of mammalians is endowed of multiple functions such as protection, secretion, absorption and thermoregulation. Birth stimulates the epidermal barrier maturation and the skin surface acidification especially in premature infants. In full-term infants the developed stratum corneum accomplishes competent barrier function, in contrast to prematures. Complete barrier maturation in preterm infants is fulfilled by 2-4 weeks of the pos

Allostasis and allostatic load: implications for neuropsychopharmacology.

The primary hormonal mediators of the stress response, glucocorticoids and catecholamines, have both protective and damaging effects on the body. In the short run, they are essential for adaptation, maintenance of homeostasis, and survival (allostasis). Yet, over longer time intervals, they exact a cost (allostatic load) that can accelerate disease processes. The concepts of allostasis and allostatic load center around the brain as interpreter and responder to environmental challenges and as a target of those challenges. In anxiety disorders, depressive illness, hostile and aggressive states,
