BACKGROUND: Although mental health symptoms increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, little is known about the associations between nursing students' perceived risk of contracting COVID-19 and their academic and psychological well-being. This study examined associations between perceived COVID-19 risk, likelihood of completing nursing education, and mental health factors of nursing students.
METHOD: A total of 979 nursing students completed self-report measures of perceived COVID-19 risk, anticipated academic completion, anxiety and depressive symptoms, stress, copin

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has been strikingly neglected in Western medicine. Despite its profound importance for regulation, adjustment and coordination of body systems, it lacks priority in training and practice and receives scant attention in numerous major textbooks. The ANS is integral to manifestations of illness, underlying familiar physical and psychological symptoms. When ANS activity is itself dysfunctional, usual indicators of acute illness may prove deceptive. Recognising the relevance of the ANS can involve seeing the familiar through fresh eyes, challenging assumptions in

A dyslexia coping programme entitled Success and Dyslexia was implemented in two primary schools within a whole-class coping programme and whole-school dyslexia professional development context. One hundred and two year 6 students, 23 of whom had dyslexia, undertook surveys pretest, post-test and at 1-year follow-up. Effectiveness of the coping programme and maintenance of effects for the students after transition to secondary school were investigated. Inclusion of contrast group data in the follow-up year suggested significant positive changes at first and second follow-ups in locus of contro

Understanding the malleable determinants of cellular aging is critical to understanding human longevity. Telomeres may provide a pathway for exploring this question. Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. The length of telomeres offers insight into mitotic cell and possibly organismal longevity. Telomere length has now been linked to chronic stress exposure and depression. This raises the question of mechanism: How might cellular aging be modulated by psychological functioning? We consider two psychological processes or states that are in opposition to one another-threat

Ruminative self-focus on mood, problems and other aspects of self-experience can have both mal adaptive consequences, perpetuating depression, and, adaptive consequences, promoting recovery from upsetting events. Increasing evidence suggests that these contrasting effects may be explained by distinct varieties of ruminative self-focus, each with distinct functional properties. This study tested the prediction (Emotional processing, three modes of mind and the prevention of relapse in depression. Behav. Res. Therapy, 37 (1999) S53) that an experiential mode of self-focused attention would facil

PURPOSE: The high demands of academia place staff under considerable stress, and enhancing resilience has been proposed as a means of coping with stress; however, resilience in academic contexts remains underexplored. This systematic review aimed to investigate resilience in academia from the perspective of academic staff.
METHOD: This review was registered within PROSPERO (CRD420251018894) and conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Qualitative studies were identified through searches of CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library, from inception to April

Physicians in internal medicine are exposed to high levels of stress. Conditions of chronic emotional fatigue and burnout are widespread. Resilience, the ability to cope with difficult situations and to adapt to adverse circumstances, is essential. Resilient physicians remain calm, make clear decisions and are in a position to support the collegial environment as well as to requisition and utilize support themselves. Resilience can be described at a biological level and is influenced by biological mechanisms, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; , even resilience of patients should

Post-traumatic growth (PTG), defined as positive psychological changes following trauma, has garnered attention in recent years within the context of cancer. This scoping review aims to synthesise and map PTG-related studies published in the last 5 years among adult cancer populations. A comprehensive literature search identified 109 eligible studies published between 2018 and 2023, predominantly cross-sectional in design, focusing on various cancer types, with a significant proportion examining breast cancer. The findings reveal that PTG is consistently associated with cognitive, emotional, s

The growing burden of chronic diseases has increased interest in both psychological distress and positive psychological functioning among people living with chronic conditions. In this context, flourishing may be understood as the capacity to maintain positive functioning, meaning, social connectedness, and personal growth while adapting to long-term illness. This narrative review examines the conceptualization, theoretical foundations, current evidence, measurement instruments, and factors associated with flourishing in chronic disease populations. Insights from Keyes' Mental Health Continuum

OBJECTIVES: A diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) during fetal life or infancy can be devastating for parents, resulting in significant psychological stressors. The goals of this study were to (1) assess maternal resolution and adaptation to a new diagnosis of CHD, (2) explore how maternal resolution and adaptation relates to psychological well-being and (3) evaluate whether specific illness parameters impact resolution status.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated resolution to diagnosis in the first 6 months of life for mothers of children with CHD. Mothers completed a React

Breast cancer treatment can have a profound influence on a woman's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. Anxiety, depression, anger, fatigue, and fear of recurrence are common responses to a diagnosis of breast cancer and undergoing breast cancer treatment. Women develop their own coping strategies for the pain and other effects of treatment. However, it is unclear whether there is a relationship between adaptation to pain and psychological distress during breast cancer treatment. Findings from the present study reveal that breast cancer patients who have better pain copin

The aim of this research was to assess the level of adaptation to multiple sclerosis (Sclerosis multiplex; MS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of the study population as well as to determine the relationship between biomedical factors related to the course of multiple sclerosis, adaptation to the disease, and HRQoL. Analysis of medical records, clinical and psychological interviews, the Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Guy's Neurological Disability Scale (GNDS), the Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS), and the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale 29 (MSIS-29) were collected from 13

BACKGROUND: To mitigate the psychological burdens of COVID-19 for frontline clinicians (FCs), we adapted an existing evidence-based resiliency program, Stress Management and Resilience Training Relaxation Response Program (SMART-3RP), for FCs. This analysis explores moderators of stress coping to determine which subgroups of FCs benefited most from SMART-3RP.
METHODS: 102 FCs from Mass General Brigham hospitals engaged in the adapted SMART-3RP. Assessments were completed at group entry (Week 0) and completion (Week 4). The primary outcome was stress coping, and we examined 15 possible baselin
