Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast in a male: A case report.

RATIONALE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is an infrequent neoplasm, and the occurrence in males is rare. Therefore, diagnostic and therapeutic challenges are inevitable. PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we present a case of a 44-year-old man with a tumor on his right breast that he had known about for 6 years. DIAGNOSES: The patient underwent a lumpectomy, and the histological examination confirmed a diagnosis of ACC. INTERVENTIONS: Modified radical mastectomy was subsequently conducted in the patient. No positive lymph nodes were observed in the postoperative pathological examinati

[Management of a tracheal adenoid cystic medico-surgical carcinoma].

Adenoid cystic carcinoma or cylindroma is a rare tumor of the trachea which arises from mucous secreting cells. Its evolution and growth are slow but it is often fatal in the absence of radical treatment. The latter relies on a surgical sleeve resection of the pathological area, with a tracheo-tracheal anastomosis. Therapeutic bronchoscopy plays a crucial role in the clinical improvement of patients before surgery which will be performed under better conditions. For inoperable patients, radiotherapy has proved its efficacy, unlike conventional chemotherapy. The finding of biomarkers expressed

Relation between adenoid size and otitis media with effusion.

AIMS: This study compares the efficacy of adenoidectomy on otitis media with effusion (OME) in patients with different size of adenoids and the connection between differently sized adenoids and middle ear effusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Children with a history of at least 3 months' OME underwent adenoidectomy and myringotomy without the insertion of a tympanostomy tube. Treatment assignment was stratified by adenoids' size causing choanal obstruction (grade I-III) and according to Eustachian tube ostium obstruction (grade A-C). The subjects were followed for 12 months. RESULTS: Adenoidectomy

Adenoid cystic carcinoma in ventricle of larynx: An interesting case.

RATIONALE: Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) are malignant tumors and occur in the major and the minor salivary glands. ACCs are rare in the larynx. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old female patient who presented with a 12 months history of paraesthesia pharynges and hoarseness for 4 months. Laryngoscopy showed an endophytic lesion in the right supglottic area with no laryngeal stenosis. And magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the presence of a submucosal mass in the supglottic area. Supporting laryngoscope was performed under general anesthesia and a lesion biopsy obtained. DIAGNOSES: Th

Ceruminous Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of External Auditory Canal.

An adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the ceruminous glands is very rare; its diagnosis is most often challenging, and simple biopsies may be misleading. Our paper describes a case of a circumferential mass of the left ear canal that was initially reported as a basal cell carcinoma on biopsies in the clinic and on frozen sections intraoperatively. The final pathology was an AdCC of the ceruminous glands of the external auditory canal. Our case reflects the difficulty in the diagnosis of an AdCC of the ceruminous gland and the importance of keeping broad differential diagnoses in mind when coun

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal sac: case report.

Lacrimal sac tumors are rare with a clinical presentation that typically includes obstruction of the lacrimal drainage system and epiphora as the most frequent symptom. Cribriform adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the most common malignant epithelial tumor of the lacrimal gland and minor salivary glands; however, its occurrence in the lacrimal drainage apparatus is extremely rare. Given the rarity of ACC, definitive diagnosis is almost invariably late conferring a poor prognosis. Herein we report the case of a 41-year-old woman with primary ACC of the lacrimal sac and describe the ophthalmolog

[Sequent therapy for adenoidal and tonsillar hypertrophy patients with OSDB].

Children suffering from adenoidal and tonsillar hypertrophy are very common, the hypertrophy of adenoid and tonsil could obstruct the upper airway to cause mouth breathing,as a result, some dentofacial deformities are developed. The key reason for these deformities is mouth breathing. For the children with adenoidal and tonsillar hypertrophy, T&A is just the first step for treatment, most patients need a sequent treatment by the doctors from multiple departments, such as ENT doctors, orthodontics doctors, orthognathic surgeon. The earlier the treatment begins, the better the effect is.

Sinus and adenoid inflammation in children with chronic rhinosinusitis and asthma.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and asthma frequently coexist in children and adults. However, the precise pathophysiologic mechanism of this interaction is still poorly understood, especially in children, owing to the lack of direct measurements of mucosal inflammation in the upper airways. OBJECTIVE: To determine the pathophysiologic mechanism by analyzing the expression of a large array of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in the sinus and adenoid tissues surgically removed from pediatric patients with CRS refractory to medical management. METHODS: Twenty-eight children 2 to

Discovery of invasion routes for nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma.

The aim of this study is to discover regional invasion routes for nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (NACC) through analyses of the magnetic resonance (MR) images and comparison with keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (KSCC). Both MR results and clinical records were retrospectively reviewed for 18 patients with NACC and 182 patients with KSCC. The metastasis routes of NACC were identified by analysis of MR images of patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There were significant differences in skull base invasion and cavernous sinus invasion (p = 0.020 and 0.028, respec

Adenoid hypertrophy in children with allergic disease and influential factors.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) may cause several comorbid conditions including sleep apnea, chronic serous otitis and sinusitis. Such conditions are more common among children with allergic diseases. In our study, we aimed to determine the patient profile associated with higher incidence of adenoid hypertrophy and the related influential factors. METHODS: The study included 1322 children being treated and followed up for allergic conditions. 100 children with no allergic diseases presenting during the same period to the clinic were included as the control group. Thoracoscopic tracheal resection and reconstruction for adenoid cystic carcinoma.

We describe a novel technique of thoracoscopic circumferential tracheal resection and end-to-end anastomosis. A 60-year-old woman presented with wheezing and progressive dyspnea. Computed tomography scan revealed a mass at the lower trachea, and a nitinol mesh stent was implanted by bronchoscopy. After 2 weeks, a complete thoracoscopic tracheal resection and reconstruction was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful. The final pathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea.

Montelukast in Adenoid Hypertrophy: Its Effect on Size and Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (AH) is considered the most common cause of upper respiratory tract obstruction among children. It results in a spectrum of symptoms from mouth breathing, nasal obstruction, hyponasal speech, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to growth failure and cardiovascular morbidity. Adenotonsillectomy is a typical strategy for patients with AH, but may lead to serious complications such as bleeding (4-5%) and postoperative respiratory compromise (27%), especially among young children, as well as recurrence of adenoid tissue (10-20%). Thus, non-surgical t

Validity of acoustic rhinometry in the evaluation of patients with adenoid hypertrophy.

Reliability of acoustic rhinometry (AR) for preoperative diagnosis and decision of surgery in children with adenoid hypertrophy were investigated in this study. Fifty-five children who cannot tolerate nasal endoscopic examination were included. The AR was performed preoperatively and postoperatively 1 month later. The volume of distance between the 6th and 10th centimeters in rhinogram curve was calculated for evaluating the adenoid notch (AN) region. The volume of AN region was compared with each patient's volume of the adenoid tissue removed with adenoidectomy. Whereas the median adenoid spe

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of female breast: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare neoplasm accounting for 0.1% of breast carcinomas. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 30 year old female patient presented with multiple lumps in the right breast. Excision biopsy of a lump in the lower outer quadrant revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma. A right sided modified radical mastectomy (MRM) was performed, with axillary clearance. Histopathology revealed a fibroadenoma accounting for one mass and adenoid cystic carcinoma in another, confirmed on Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining. Three out of the eight excised axillary lymph

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of head and neck: apropos of a case.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, arising from glandular tissues, found mainly in the head and neck. Generally, it presents insidiously but can behave aggressively making its course unpredictable. Surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy continue to be the cornerstone for its treatment. ACC remains extremely difficult to treat. The authors report a case of a 37-year-old woman with bloody rhinorrhea for 6 months. She was diagnosed with a left nasal cavity lesion that was biopsied, and the anatomopathological result showed ACC. The patient was submitted to a left extended max

Definitive radiotherapy for unresected adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignancy that usually originates in the salivary glands of the head and neck but has rarely been known to originate in the trachea. This histology has a predilection for perineural invasion and a tendency for both local and distant recurrences. While surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment of tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma, tumor size, location, and patient comorbidities may preclude surgery, and the optimal nonsurgical management remains undefined. In the absence of locoregional lymph node metastases, we recommend highly conformal radiotherapy a
