Adolescent Mental Health, Contraceptive Knowledge, and Teen Pregnancy Risk: A Systematic Review.

Background: Adolescent depressive and anxiety symptoms may erode motivation and problem-solving needed for timely contraception, while online information quality is uneven. We synthesized evidence linking mental health, contraceptive knowledge/access, and teen pregnancy risk. Methods: Following PRISMA-2020, we searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus to 7 July 2025 for primary studies including adolescents that measured validated mental health symptoms or psychiatric settings and reported contraceptive knowledge/access/behavior and/or teen pregnancy outcomes. Two reviewers screened/extracted data;

Mapping the role of sexuality in adolescent mental health and substance use.

Individuals who belong to a sexual minority are at greater risk of adverse health and social outcomes. These effects are observed during adolescence when many mental health problems, such as depression, first emerge. Here, we used a network analytic approach to better understand the role that sexual minority status plays in the association between depression, interpersonal difficulties and substance use in a large sample of mid-adolescents. In doing so, we used data from 8017 fourteen year olds from the UK's Millennium Cohort Study, of which 490 self-identified as belonging to a sexual minorit

Smartphone use, gender, and adolescent mental health: Longitudinal evidence from South Korea.

•We use longitudinal data and FE-IV technique to identify causal effects of smartphone use on adolescent mental health.•We find that longer smartphone use causes increased depressive symptoms and higher suicidal ideation for girls, not for boys.•Social and active smartphone usage such as communicating with friends and family predicts lower depressive symptoms.•Personal history of depressive symptoms and the timing of puberty moderate the effect of SUT on depressive symptoms.•Addictive smartphone behavior is frequent among adolescents, and more prevalent among girls than boys.

The sexual and reproductive health covariates of early menarche among adolescent girls.

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that girls who reach menarche at an early age are at greater risk for negative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes than their later-maturing counterparts, but very little research has examined this issue in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in West Africa. The goal of the current study was to determine whether early menarche was associated with any SRH outcomes in a sample of Ghanaian girls. METHODS: The study data were drawn from the baseline assessment of a longitudinal study involving two age cohorts (13-14 and 18-19 years) of 700 adolescent girls fro

Severe prenatal shocks and adolescent health: Evidence from the Dutch Hunger Winter.

This paper investigates health impacts at the end of adolescence of prenatal exposure to multiple shocks, by exploiting the unique natural experiment of the Dutch Hunger Winter. At the end of World War II, a famine occurred abruptly in the Western Netherlands (November 1944-May 1945), pushing the previously and subsequently well-nourished Dutch population to the brink of starvation. We link high-quality military recruits data with objective health measurements for the cohorts born in the years surrounding WWII with newly digitised historical records on calories and nutrient composition of the

An Initiative to Improve Efficiency of Emergency Department Adolescent Behavioral Health Visits.

Pediatric mental illnesses are quite prevalent in the United States and worldwide. Prevalence has been increasing, and it is estimated that 13% to 20% of US children have a mental illness that costs an estimated $247 billion per year and affects children's social, emotional, and cognitive development (Perou et al. MMWR Suppl. 2013;62:1-35). Pediatric behavioral health visits to the emergency department (ED) have been on an exponential rise constituting 5% to 7% of ED visits (Kalb et al. Pediatrics. 2019;143(4):e20182192). This requires pediatric emergency physicians to frequently manage pediat

Quality Initiative to Increase Delivery of Adolescent Hospital-Based Reproductive Health Care.

OBJECTIVES: Hospitals are an important nontraditional setting in which to address adolescent reproductive health. However, opportunities for intervention are frequently missed, especially for boys and patients hospitalized for noningestion complaints. Our global aim was to increase delivery of reproductive health care to adolescents hospitalized through our children's hospital Pediatric Hospital Medicine service. METHODS: We performed 2 quality improvement intervention cycles: (1) provider education and monthly reminder e-mails and (2) an automated electronic health record (EHR) adolescent hi

Assessing and Promoting Cardiovascular Health for Adolescent Women: User-Centered Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. A considerable number of young women already have risk factors for CVD. Awareness of CVD and its risk factors is critical to preventing CVD, yet younger women are less aware of CVD prevalence, its risk factors, and preventative behaviors compared to older women. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess CVD awareness among adolescent and young adult women and develop a lifestyle-based cardiovascular risk assessment tool for the promotion of CVD awareness among this population. The roles of sex and gender in child and adolescent mental health.

Neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders are common in children and young people, and frequently continue to be impairing into adulthood. Biological sex and gender identity are important factors in the likelihood of the development, referral and diagnosis of these disorders, as well as sources of clinical heterogeneity. In this editorial, we highlight that the aetiology of neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders in young people is complex and multi-faceted. Emerging evidence has implicated sex and gender as playing an important role in understanding the onset and course of psychop

Challenges in Analyzing Functional Epigenetic Data in Perspective of Adolescent Psychiatric Health.

The formative period of adolescence plays a crucial role in the development of skills and abilities for adulthood. Adolescents who are affected by mental health conditions are at risk of suicide and social and academic impairments. Gene-environment complementary contributions to the molecular mechanisms involved in psychiatric disorders have emphasized the need to analyze epigenetic marks such as DNA methylation (DNAm) and non-coding RNAs. However, the large and diverse bioinformatic and statistical methods, referring to the confounders of the statistical models, application of multiple-testin

Preventive health service use among survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer.

Preventive health screenings are essential for survivors of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, who are at greater risk for non-cancer related death compared to individuals without a history of cancer. However, little research exists examining their use of screening services. In order to identify potential areas for targeted improvements in AYA survivorship care, we examined adherence to United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screening recommendations among members of Kaiser Permanente Southern California. The study population included individuals diagnosed with c

Adolescent body dissatisfaction and disordered eating: Predictors of later risky health behaviours.

RATIONALE: Body dissatisfaction is prevalent among teenagers, and may influence the uptake of risky health behaviours. OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the influence of body dissatisfaction on smoking, cannabis use, drug use, self-harm, gambling, and drinking and the mediating role of disordered eating in a population-based sample of British adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 2634 females and 1684 males from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort. Logistic regression was used to test if body dissatisfaction at 14 years old predicted the onset of risky health beh

Childhood homelessness, resilience, and adolescent mental health: A prospective, person-centered approach.

School districts and other service providers are increasingly aware of the substantial mental health needs of students experiencing family homelessness. Past findings are mixed regarding whether homelessness conveys unique risk beyond the risks associated with extreme poverty. With prospective longitudinal data on homelessness experiences across childhood, we utilized latent profile analysis as a person-centered approach to conceptualizing mental health outcomes in adolescence for 3,778 youth. We considered literal family homelessness as well as families living doubled-up, and we employed prop

Associations between Child Maltreatment, Harsh Parenting, and Sleep with Adolescent Mental Health.

Youth who suffer from psychiatric disorders are at high risk for negative outcomes, including aggression and substance abuse. Although many youth with psychiatric disorders have endured harsh parenting and/or child maltreatment (CM), differential associations between these experiential factors have yet to be fully explored. Sleep problems have also been implicated in psychiatric disorders and are consistently associated with CM. The overlap and unique contributions of CM and sleep problems to the mental health of youth remains unclear; longitudinal studies from late childhood into adolescence,

'He supported me 100%': Mexican-immigrant fathers, daughters, and adolescent sexual health.

Objective: First and second generation Mexican-origin adolescents in the U.S. face social and economic disadvantage and sexual health disparities. Although fathers can support child and adolescent development, the literature has portrayed Mexican-origin immigrant fathers as emotionally distant and sexist. This study aims to treat migration as a social determinant of health to examine father-daughter relationships and adolescent sexual health in Mexican-origin immigrant families. Methods: Integrating qualitative data from life history interviews with 21 Mexican-origin young women in immigrant fa

Asthma Disparity Photovoice: The Discourses of Black Adolescent and Public Health Policymakers.

BACKGROUND: Policies in U.S. public schools that address asthma management for Black adolescents may not sufficiently transform sociocultural determinants of disparities. A critical analysis of public health policy maker and adolescent discourses on asthma management using an ecological framework could inform policy development. This study describes the discourses of asthma management disparities of school and other public health policymakers and Black adolescents with asthma during a statewide asthma planning activity. METHOD: I conducted a qualitative critical discourse analysis on transcri
