INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is an unusual inflammatory condition characterized by dense, band-like polyclonal plasmacytic infiltration of the lamina propria. Clinically, it appears as gingival enlargement with erythema and swelling of the attached and free gingiva and is not associated with any loss of attachment. The aim of this report is to present a rare case of severe generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) associated with a PCG lesion that was successfully treated and maintained non-surgically.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old white male with a non-contributory medical

BACKGROUND: Dental implant placement is a widely used treatment that provides functional and esthetic resolution for patients suffering from tooth loss. However, the incidence of peri-implant diseases has been rising recently. Periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases share many similarities. Hence, it is important to find out whether patients with aggressive periodontal disease possess a higher risk of developing peri-implant diseases. The aim of this study is to study whether generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) has similar survival rates (SRs) and marginal bone loss (MBL) when c

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant that is produced in response to diverse inflammatory stimuli, and is known predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. Aggressive and chronic periodontitis are two main forms of periodontal disease, which differ mainly in the method of disease progression. This study aims at determining and comparing the relative levels of serum CRP and alveolar bone loss in aggressive and chronic periodontitis patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 45 subjects, which were divided into 3 groups diagnosed as having generalized aggressive period

The modern level of knowledge on the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease identifies microbial factor as the dominant cause of the development of aggressive and typical forms of periodontitis. The study involved 125 patients with chronic generalized periodontitis and aggressive forms of periodontitis divided in 2 groups. The treatment tactics was chosen selectively depending on the amount of periodontopathogenic microorganisms revealed by real-time PCR. In patients treated with antibiotics this amount decreased significantly resulting in clinical improvement and rapid remission.

Localized aggressive periodontitis is a distinct entity of periodontal disease and is characterized by deep vertical bony defects that typically affect the first molars and incisors of young patients. Therapy is usually aimed at reducing the pathogenic microflora through scaling and root planing and the administration of systemic antibiotics. However, conservative periodontal therapy may result in reparative wound healing with limited regeneration of the lost tissues. Periodontal surgery combined with enamel matrix derivative has been introduced as a method to promote regeneration of the lost

In view of the reports that polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) of patients with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) exhibit hyper-responsiveness to stimulation, it has been suggested that such abnormalities could lead to PMN-mediated tissue damage during inflammation. To determine whether these abnormalities include signal transduction, we compared cytoplasmic calcium concentration (Delta[Ca2+](i)) and cytoplasmic pH (DeltapH(i)) changes, early stimulus responses to chemotactic agents, of LAP versus control (C)-PMN and explored whether these could be modulated by sensitizing cytokines or

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stage IV grade C localized periodontitis (pre-puberal localized aggressive periodontitis/LPP) is a rare form of inflammatory periodontal disease occurring in clinically healthy individuals (no/small calculus/dental plaque traces), due a hyper-aggressive auto-immune response to high amounts of bacteria present in the oral cavity.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 4-year-old Caucasian girl with localized gingival inflammation and advanced bone loss around the temporary lower left canine. The first diagnostic assumption was hypophosphatasia, and the patie

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous intercellular messenger molecule with important cardiovascular, neurological, and immune functions. In addition, it has been postulated that the pharmacological inhibition of NO or its actions may be therapeutically valuable in the disease management. The levels of nitric oxide may provide clues about the severity and the state of the underlying disease process. It could be an inflammatory biomarker that may enable clinicians to direct the environmentally based prevention or treatment programmes and to establish whether NO plays a ro

PURPOSE: Lipopolysaccharides (LPS), a major component of the cell membrane of gram-negative bacteria, are the main stimulants of the host immune response, initiating inflammatory changes and responsible for periodontal tissue destruction. The mCD14, which is found primarily on monocytes and macrophages, is the key membranous receptor involved in LPS binding. CD14 is also present in the serum as a soluble form (sCD14) released due to shedding from monocytes. The aim of the study was to assess CD14 expression on peripheral blood monocytes in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GA

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is characterized by general health and rapid destruction of periodontal tissue. The familial aggregation of this disease highlights the involvement of genetic factors in its pathogeny. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify AgP-related genes in a Japanese population, and the lipid metabolism-related gene, lipase-a, lysosomal acid type (LIPA), was suggested as an AgP candidate gene. However, there is no report about the expression and function(s) of LIPA in periodontal tissue. Hence, we studied the involvement of

BACKGROUND: The 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions grouped the diseases previously recognized as chronic (CP) or aggressive (AgP) periodontitis under a single category named periodontitis. The rationale for this decision was the lack of specific patterns of immune-inflammatory response or microbial profiles associated with CP or AgP. However, no previous studies have compiled the results of all studies comparing subgingival microbial data between these clinical conditions. Thus, this systematic review aimed to answer the following

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease is characterised by chronic infection and inflammation in periodontal tissues leading to destruction of alveolar bone with subsequent tooth loss. Periodontal infections are the result of an interaction between tooth associated microbial biofilms and the host defences. Periodontal pathogens can affect local and systemic immune and inflammatory responses.
AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum C-Reactive Protein (CRP), plasma fibrinogen and peripheral blood levels in healthy subjects, chronic and aggressive periodontitis patients.
