Three adaptive hypotheses have been forwarded to explain the distinctive Neanderthal face: (i) an improved ability to accommodate high anterior bite forces, (ii) more effective conditioning of cold and/or dry air and, (iii) adaptation to facilitate greater ventilatory demands. This study presents a case involving two air conditioning technicians who sustained fatal blast injuries due to the malfunction of an AC compressor during service operations. The injury profiles exhibited by the subjects were indicative of explosion-related trauma, characterized by both blast wave and thermal effects, as well as penetrating injuries to both external and internal anatomical structures. The study outlines the events leading to the compressor failure and provides a comprehensive analysis of the autopsy results.

Pollution of air ventilation and conditioning systems by microorganisms and products of their activity can lead to the development of infectious (legionnaires' disease) and allergic (humidifier fever) diseases. Clinical, immunological and hygienic investigations under natural conditions of 72 persons working in offices helped to study a respiratory disease which was similar to humidifier fever. The removal of dust and mud from the system and thorough cleaning of all conditioned rooms put an end to this disease.

Between December, 1979, and July, 1980, 12 cases of legionnaires' disease were recognised in a district general hospital. 11 of the patients probably acquired their infection within the hospital. Epidemiological and environmental studies indicated that the plumbing system and possibly also the air-conditioning cooling-tower exhaust in the new building of the hospital were the sources of infection. Chlorination of the cold-water supply and raising the hot-water temperature appeared to terminate the outbreak.
