Prenatal air pollution exposure and newborn blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution exposure has been associated with increased blood pressure in adults. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations of antenatal exposure to ambient air pollution with newborn systolic blood pressure (SBP). METHODS: We studied 1,131 mother-infant pairs in a Boston, Massachusetts, area pre-birth cohort. We calculated average exposures by trimester and during the 2 to 90 days before birth for temporally resolved fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 μm; PM2.5), black carbon (BC), nitrogen oxides, nitrogen dioxide, ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide measured at stationary monitoring sites…

Ambient air pollution and preeclampsia: a spatiotemporal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Available evidence concerning the association between air pollution and preeclampsia is limited, and specific associations with early- and late-onset preeclampsia have not been assessed. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association, if any, between preeclampsia (all, early-, and late-onset) and exposure to nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5; fine particles), ≤ 10 μm, and 2.5-10 μm, and PM2.5 light absorption (a proxy for elemental carbon) during the entire pregnancy and during the first, second, and third trimesters. Ambient air pollution and allergic diseases in children.

The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased worldwide, a phenomenon that can be largely attributed to environmental effects. Among environmental factors, air pollution due to traffic is thought to be a major threat to childhood health. Residing near busy roadways is associated with increased asthma hospitalization, decreased lung function, and increased prevalence and severity of wheezing and allergic rhinitis. Recently, prospective cohort studies using more accurate measurements of individual exposure to air pollution have been conducted and have provided definitive evidence of the impa…

Air pollution ultrafine particles: toxicity beyond the lung.

BACKGROUND: Ultrafine particles or nanoparticles (UFPs or PM0.1) are the fraction of ambient particulates with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 0.1 microm. Currently UFPs are emerging as the most abundant particulate pollutants in urban and industrial areas, as their exposures have increased dramatically because of anthropogenic sources such as internal combustion engines, power plants, incinerators and many other sources of thermo-degradation. Ultrafine particles have been less studied than PM2.5 and PM10 particulates, mass concentrations of particles smaller than 2.5 and 10 microm, respe

Air pollution and carotid arterial stiffness in children.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Many studies unequivocally indicate that air pollution is directly linked to the adverse cardiovascular outcomes in the general population. No data are currently available on cardiovascular effects of exposure to trafficked roads in healthy children. Distance of the residence to a major road has been shown to be a useful proxy for long-term traffic exposure and seem to be more consistently associated with atherosclerosis than particulate matter 2.5. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between the distance to a major road and carotid arterial …

Air pollution and birth outcomes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Several mechanisms are suspected to underlie adverse birth outcomes among mothers exposed to air pollutants, including inflammation, direct toxic effects on fetuses and the placenta, displacement of the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve, and formation of DNA adducts. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the association between air pollutants and birth outcomes of low birth weight (LBW), preterm (PTB) and small for gestational age (SGA) births. METHODS: Electronic databases and bibliographies of identified articles were searched for English language studies reporting on birth ou

Air pollution: impact on maternal and perinatal health.

While air pollution levels have fallen in recent years, air quality in the United States is still poor and adversely affects the health of millions of persons. Because of physiologic changes in pregnancy, pregnant women and their fetuses are among the most vulnerable. This paper reviews the current state of our air quality, the impact that exposure to air pollution has on general health and the health of a pregnancy, and offers suggestions on how to minimize exposures.

Ambient air pollution and respiratory emergency department visits.

BACKGROUND: A number of emergency department studies have corroborated findings from mortality and hospital admission studies regarding an association of ambient air pollution and respiratory outcomes. More refined assessment has been limited by study size and available air quality data. METHODS: Measurements of 5 pollutants (particulate matter [PM10], ozone, nitrogen dioxide [NO2], carbon monoxide [CO], and sulfur dioxide [SO2]) were available for the entire study period (1 January 1993 to 31 August 2000); detailed measurements of particulate matter were available for 25 months. We obtained …

Traffic air pollution and mortality rate advancement periods.

Chronic exposure to air pollution is associated with increased mortality rates. The impact of air pollution relative to other causes of death in a population is of public health importance and has not been well established. In this study, the rate advancement periods associated with traffic pollution exposures were estimated. Study subjects underwent pulmonary function testing at a clinic in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, between 1985 and 1999. Cox regression was used to model mortality from all natural causes during 1992-2001 in relation to lung function, body mass index, a diagnosis of chronic p…

Disparities in exposure to air pollution during pregnancy.

Previous research shows poorer birth outcomes for racial and ethnic minorities and for persons with low socioeconomic status (SES). We evaluated whether mothers in groups at higher risk for poor birth outcomes live in areas of higher air pollution and whether higher exposure to air pollution contributes to poor birth outcomes. An index representing long-term exposure to criteria air pollutants was matched with birth certificate data at the county level for the United States in 1998-1999. We used linear regression to estimate associations between the air pollution index and maternal race and ed…

Air pollution and daily mortality in Shenyang, China.

The authors analyzed daily mortality data in Shenyang, China, for calendar year 1992 to identify possible associations with ambient sulfur dioxide and total suspended particulates. Both total suspended particulate concentrations (mean = 430 microg/m3, maximum = 1,141 microg/m3) and sulfur dioxide concentrations (mean 197 = microg/m3, maximum = 659 microg/m3) far exceeded the World Health Organization's recommended criteria. An average of 45.5 persons died each day. The lagged moving averages of air-pollution levels, calculated as the mean of the nonmissing air-pollution levels of the concurren

Air pollution and respiratory health in Mexico City.

To determine the effect of air pollution in Mexico City on respiratory health, patient visits for upper respiratory tract infections were monitored in five clinics. Levels of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide, and climatological variables were collected. Correlations of filtered data revealed an association between NO2 and O3 with an increase in visits to clinics because of respiratory problems. Autoregressive analysis indicated that pollutant levels/respiratory visits associations remained significant even after simultaneous inclusion of temperature, suggesting that…

Air pollution and mortality in Philadelphia, 1974-1988.

Analyses involving data from many locations throughout the world have now been conducted to assess the association between air pollution and mortality. To date, six independent analyses of mortality data for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have been reported. In this new analysis of Philadelphia data for 1974-1988, Poisson regression models were developed to estimate the increased risk of daily mortality associated with air pollution while controlling for longer-term time trends and season and for weather. Model development was based on prior understanding of the effects of these factors on mortal…

On cancer risk estimation of urban air pollution.

The usefulness of data from various sources for a cancer risk estimation of urban air pollution is discussed. Considering the irreversibility of initiations, a multiplicative model is preferred for solid tumors. As has been concluded for exposure to ionizing radiation, the multiplicative model, in comparison with the additive model, predicts a relatively larger number of cases at high ages, with enhanced underestimation of risks by short follow-up times in disease-epidemiological studies. For related reasons, the extrapolation of risk from animal tests on the basis of daily absorbed dose per k…

Asthma and low level air pollution in Helsinki.

The effects of relatively low levels of air pollution and weather conditions on the number of patients who had asthma attacks and who were admitted to a hospital were studied in Helsinki during a 3-y period. The number of admissions increased during cold weather (n = 4,209), especially among persons who were of working age but not among children. Even after standardization for temperature, all admissions, including emergency ward admissions, were significantly correlated with ambient air concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), oz…

Particulate air pollution and daily mortality in Detroit.

Particulate air pollution has been associated with increased mortality during episodes of high pollution concentrations. The relationship at lower concentrations has been more controversial, as has the relative role of particles and sulfur dioxide. Replication has been difficult because suspended particle concentrations are usually measured only every sixth day in the U.S. This study used concurrent measurements of total suspended particulates (TSP) and airport visibility from every sixth day sampling for 10 years to fit a predictive model for TSP. Predicted daily TSP concentrations were then …
