OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of medications in African-American and Caucasian elderly Medicare patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Alabama.
DESIGN: Retrospective medical record review.
SETTING: All acute care hospitals in Alabama.
PATIENTS: All Medicare patients with a principal discharge diagnosis of AMI from June 1992 through February 1993. We excluded those patients less than 65 years of age and those of ethnicity other than African-American or Caucasian (N = 4,052).

Translocations led to emergence of this rabies variant in the mid-Atlantic states, followed by spread northerly to northeast Ohio and Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, Canada. A new hemoglobin variant, G(couhatta) (alpha2(A) beta2(iiiglu-->ala)), has been found in three generations of a family from the Alabama Coushatta Indian tribe in east Texas. The propositus suffers from an apparently unrelated, possibly genetic, agranulocytosis. According to the history and the blood grouping data there is considerable in breeding in the tribe and remarkably little admixture with other ethnic groups.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD). However, barriers exist that prevent access to this treatment modality.
METHODS: An IRB-approved mixed-method survey of barriers to HSCT in SCD was given to parents, caregivers, and adolescents obtaining care at the Children's of Alabama/University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic.
