The refeeding syndrome is increasingly recognised. It is a serious change in electrolytes when nutrition is reintroduced to malnourished patients. Alcohol dependence is a risk factor for the refeeding syndrome. We report a prospective cohort study of 36 alcoholics hospitalised for withdrawal management. We found no evidence of refeeding syndrome in any patient after 3 days of hospitalisation, despite hypomagnesaemia, a risk factor for the refeeding syndrome being prevalent (44% of subjects). Alcoholism is a risk factor in the worsening of psoriasis. The authors present two cases of flared severe psoriasis in alcoholic patients showing dramatic improvement of their skin disease using treatments directed towards correcting abnormalities commonly found as sequelae of alcoholism such as endotoxin production, low serum magnesium levels and elevated plasma homocysteine levels.

Fifty pathological gamblers and 42 alcohol dependent subjects were compared regarding craving, emotional states and social functioning. Subjects self-rated their cravings using the Weiss Craving Scale (WCS) and the Pennsylvania Craving Scale (PCS). Values of 42 Alaska Native clients, 30 Alaska Native counselors, and 19 non-Native counselors at seven Indian Health Service inpatient alcoholism treatment programs in Alaska are compared. Using the Rokeach Value Survey, differences were revealed on six instrumental values and six terminal values. Investigation of the prevalence of eating disorders among a large sample of Japanese alcoholics admitted for hospital treatment revealed a strong association between eating disorders and alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence among young women. That association was not apparent in young men. The results of this study of the clinical courses of eating disorders and alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence suggest that women with eating disorders, especially bulimia nervosa, are at high risk of becoming alcoholic.
