Peripheral nerve injuries are the common results of trauma that lead to pain and handicap in patients. Berberine due to its properties like antibiotic, immunostimulant, antitumor, antimotility, and positive effect on neurological disorders can be used to enhance peripheral nerve injuries. In this study, alginate/chitosan hydrogel containing different concentrations of berberine (0, 0.1, 1, 10% (w/v)) was created, evaluated, and applied as a scaffold for sciatic nerve regeneration. To prepare hydrogel, sodium alginate was dissolved in distilled water and cross-linked with CaCl2, and chitosan wa

Heart failure (HF) is a common and serious manifestation after myocardial infarction (MI). Despite their clinical importance, current treatments for MI still have several limitations. Revascularization has been proven to have positive effects on MI-induced damage. Currently biomaterial-based angiogenesis strategies represent potential candidates for MI treatment. Bioglass (BG) is a commercially available family of bioactive glasses. BG has angiogenic properties and thus might be an attractive alternative for MI treatments. Here, we loaded BG in sodium alginate (BGSA), locally injected it into

Antimicrobial biopolymers provide a biodegradable, sustainable, safe, and cheap approach to drug delivery and wound dressing to control bacterial infection and improve wound healing respectively. Here, we report a one-step method of making antimicrobial alginate polymer from sodium alginate and aqueous extract of Wakame using antibiotic aminoglycosides. Thin layer chromatography of commercially available sodium alginate and Wakame extract showed similar oligosaccharide profiles. Screening of six aminoglycosides showed that kanamycin disulfate and neomycin sulfate produces the highest amount of

Widespread concern had been given raise to the pollution of antibiotics including tetracyclines in water environment in recent years. A novel Cu-immobilized alginate adsorbent had been synthesized successfully through a facile fabrication way called sol-gel method, and its adsorption performance had been investigated for the tetracycline removal at various conditions, including the pH, temperature, the dosage of adsorbent, concentration and contact time. The adsorbent was characterized with SEM, EDX, FT-IR and XPS analyses to confirm its properties before and after adsorption. The equilibrium

In patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive esophagitis, treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is highly effective. However, in some patients, especially those with nonerosive reflux disease or atypical GERD symptoms, acid-suppressive therapy with PPIs is not as successful. Alginates are medications that work through an alternative mechanism by displacing the postprandial gastric acid pocket. This study performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the benefit of alginate-containing compounds in the treatment of patients with symptoms of GERD. PubMed…

Resveratrol (Res), a polyphenolic phytoalexin, had shown a promising therapeutic efficacy towards treatment of periodontal disease in vitro. This work aims to develop Res microbeads with strong mucoadhesion using thiolated alginate (TA) for local treatment of periodontal pockets. TA was synthesized by conjugating sodium alginate (A) with thioglycolic acid. Product was evaluated by IR and DSC. Both A and A:TA Res microbeads with different ratios were prepared by ionotropic gelation method. Formulations were evaluated regarding their entrapment efficiency (%EE), swelling index (SI), in vitro dru

Iron deficiency is one of the most prominent mineral deficiencies around the world, which especially affects large population of women and children. Development of new technologies to combat iron deficiency is on high demand. Therefore, we developed alginate microcapsule with encapsulated iron that had better oral iron bioavailability. Microcapsules containing iron with varying ratios of sodium alginate ferric(III)-saccharide were prepared using emulsification method. In vitro studies with Caco-2 cells suggested that newly synthesized microemulsions had better iron bioavailability as compared

Postoperative intra-abdominal or intrathoracic adhesions sometimes cause significant morbidity. We have designed three types of alginate-based treatments using strongly cross-linked (SL), weakly cross-linked (WL), and non-cross-linked (NL) alginate with calcium gluconate. In rat experiments, we compared the antiadhesive effects of the three types of alginate-based treatments, fibrin glue treatment (a standard treatment), and no treatment against adhesions caused by polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh (PGA-induced adhesions). The antiadhesive materials were set on the PGA sheet fixed on the parietal p

Islet encapsulation offers an immune system barrier for islet transplantation, and encapsulation within an alginate sheetlike structure offers the ability to be retrievable after transplanted. This study aims to show that human islets encapsulated into islet sheets remain functional and viable after 8 weeks in culture or when transplanted into the subcutaneous space of rats. Human islets were isolated from cadaveric organs. Dissociation and purification were done using enzymatic digestion and a continuous Ficoll-UWD gradient. Purified human islets were encapsulated in alginate sheets. Human Is

We report that sodium alginate and its graft-copolymers with (2-dimethylaminoethyl) methacrylate may attach to the surface of colloidal CdS-thioglycerol quantum dots (QDs) via a ligand exchange process and result in water-soluble and highly stable QD supramolecules. Optical properties of modified QDs in water showed that the emission intensity of QDs was still high after surface passivation.

The use of microencapsulation with alginate-poly-l-lysine (PLL) as the encapsulation material has been hampered by overgrowth of collagen around implanted capsules. Studies have shown that poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has higher biocompatibility than PLL. In this project, we examined the biocompatibility of PEG in comparison with PLL in the Lewis rat model. Capsules made from either PEG or PLL were implanted into Lewis rats in three anatomical sites: subcutaneous (SC), intramuscular (IM), and intra-epididymis (IE). After 2 or 4 weeks, capsules were retrieved, sectioned, and stained with Sirius

Alginate microspheres containing furosemide were prepared by the ionotropic external gelation technique using Ca2+, Al3+ and Ba2+ ions. The incorporation efficiency of the prepared microspheres ranged between 65% and 93%. The effect of sodium alginate concentration, cross-linking ions and drying conditions was evaluated with respect to entrapment efficiency, particle size, surface characteristics and in vitro release behavior. Infrared spectroscopic study confirmed the drug-polymer compatibility. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis revealed that the drug was molecularly dispersed in th

Alginate bead containing calcium carbonate particle were prepared by dropping the suspension of alginate/calcium carbonate (4/1, w/w) into aqueous solution of CaCl(2) (0.1 M). The pH-dependent release property of the bead was observed for 12 h using blue dextran as a model drug. The release increased up to 4 h in a saturation manner. When no calcium carbonate was contained, the release exhibited no marked variation with pH and the values were 27-39%. On the other hand, in case calcium carbonate was included in the matrix of alginate beads, intensive release(40-50%) was achieved in acidic and n

Sodium alginate suspensions in a range of water miscible vehicles were investigated as novel bioadhesive liquids for targeting the oesophageal mucosa. Such a dosage form might be utilised to coat the oesophageal surface and provide a protective barrier against gastric reflux, or to deliver therapeutic agents site-specifically. Alginate suspensions swelled and formed an adherent viscous layer on contact with the mucosa. The swelling kinetics of alginate particles on the oesophageal surface was examined with respect to vehicle composition and related to the extent, duration and location of bioad

Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by the decreased activity and/or stability of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GCR). The available treatment consists in the intravenous administration of exogenous GCR, and is effective in reverting most of the symptoms. However, in terms of bone pathology, which is among the most disabling manifestations, a slow and incomplete response is observed, indicating that adjuvant therapies are necessary to consistently restore GCR activity in bone and accelerate regeneration. In this study, calcium alginate microspheres were analyzed as a vehicle for localized

The effects of Pseudomonas putida ATH2-1RI/9 and Acidovorax delafieldii ATH2-2RS/1 on rhizosphere colonization, cyanide production, and growth of velvetleaf and corn was examined. When formulated in alginate beads and inoculated onto velvetleaf and corn plants (10(9) CFU/plant), only P. putida ATH2-1RI/9 consistently reduced velvetleaf growth. Neither isolate inhibited corn growth. Interestingly the levels of P. putida ATH2-1RI/9 in the velvetleaf rhizosphere were 1000-fold higher (7 x 10(7) CFU/g root) than the A. delafieldii ATH2-2RS/1 populations. Cyanide (53-68 mM/g root) was recovered fro
