Evaluation of the clinical effect of 4D digital strabismus and amblyopia visual function correction system combined with traditional comprehensive treatment methods on anisometropic amblyopia.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a 4D digital strabismus and amblyopia visual function correction system (4D-DSAAVFCS) in combination with conventional modalities compared with conventional modalities alone in children with anisometropic amblyopia. METHODS: This nonrandomized controlled study collected data on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), simultaneous vision, fusion vision, near stereoscopic vision, the amplitude of P100 wave (graphic evoked visual potentials), and the latency of P100 wave from both eyes at the beginning of the treatment an…

First-order basis of second-order temporal loss in amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental visual disorder characterized by monocular visual impairment due to abnormal binocular experience in early childhood, with first-order (luminance-defined) and second-order (contrast-defined) processing deficits. While first-order temporal perception deficits in amblyopia are well-documented, the nature of second-order temporal deficits remains unclear, particularly whether they stem from intrinsic extrastriate dysfunction or secondary effects of first-order spatial impairments. This study investigated temporal perception deficits in anisometropic a…

Target epigenetics mechanism to prevent synaptic dysfunction of adult amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder, and there are no effective treatment methods for adult amblyopia patients due to the decline in synaptic plasticity in visual cortex. Enriched environment (EE) has been shown to enhance synaptic plasticity, which is mediated, at least in part, by epigenetic mechanisms involving histone acetylation. This study aims to investigate whether histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors can replicate the effects of EE on visual cortical plasticity, thereby offering novel therapeutic insights for adult amblyopia. First, we established adult amblyopia mice model, w…

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in different types of amblyopia.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The visual system plays an important role in the development of the vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR). In clinical practice, the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) test is used to assess contralateral VOR. BACKGROUND: This study sought to compare the oVEMP in patients with anisometropic, strabismic, and mixed amblyopia using unilateral and bilateral (simultaneous binaural) stimulation. METHODS: Forty-two amblyopic patients (20 males and 22 females) with a mean age of 10.48 ± 4.00 years (range: 5 - 20 years) were examined. The Titmus stereopsis test, alternat…

Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiography in Children With Amblyopia.

IMPORTANCE: Amblyopia is the most common cause of visual impairment in childhood, with a prevalence of 1% to 4% in children in the United States. To date, no studies using noninvasive optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA) have measured blood flow in the retinal capillary layers in children with amblyopia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the retinal and microvascular features using OCTA in children (<18 years) with amblyopia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This observational case-control study enrolled patients from September 1, 2016, through May 31, 2017, and was conducted from Septemb…

Pediatric ophthalmology and childhood reading difficulties: Amblyopia and slow reading.

Reading is a major life activity, as recognized by the US Congress in the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008, and the education code of most US states requires schools to evaluate reading and implement reading programs to addresses students' reading difficulties. Currently, such legislation is employed to identify accommodations needed for children with bilateral visual impairment and for children with dyslexia and/or related learning disabilities. Yet recent research has shown that children with the most common form of monocular visual impairment-amblyopia-read slowly. Slo…

Occlusion therapy of unilateral amblyopia with botulinum toxin induced ptosis.

In order to evaluate the role of botulinum toxin induced ptosis as an occlusion method to treat unilateral deep strabismic amblyopia in two uncooperative children, we injected 0.2 ml of diluted botulinum toxin in the levator palpaebrae; low sedation was necessary in one of the two children. In both cases a marked ptosis was achieved, which lasted about four weeks and then gradually resolved completely. The visual acuity of the ablyopic eye increased in both children, making patching easy thereafter. One child developed amblyopia in the injected eye, which was handled successfully using part-ti…

[Landolt C and snellen e acuity: differences in strabismus amblyopia?].

BACKGROUND: Assessment of visual acuity depends on the optotypes used for measurement. The ability to recognize different optotypes differs even if their critical details appear under the same visual angle. Since optotypes are evaluated on individuals with good visual acuity and without eye disorders, differences in the lower visual acuity range cannot be excluded. In this study, visual acuity measured with the Snellen E was compared to the Landolt C acuity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 100 patients (age 8 - 90 years, median 60.5 years) with various eye disorders, among them 39 with amblyopia due to…

Functional amblyopia in kittens with unilateral exotropia. I. Electrophysiological assessment.

In two cats in which surgically induced, unilateral divergent strabismus had led to behaviourally determined amblyopia, a variety of electrophysiological parameters were determined in search of neuronal correlates of squint amblyopia. Tests that assess global neuronal excitability along the pathways from the two eyes to the visual cortex (areas 17 and 18) failed to reflect the functional inferiority of the squinting eye: retinographic responses and cortical evoked potentials elicited by Ganzfeld-stimulation and by stimulation of the optic nerves were identical for the two eyes. The ocular domi…

Self-reported physical activity in school age children with amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Residual amblyopia is associated with difficulties with eye-hand coordination, aiming and catching, balance, and gait. Whether these motor skill difficulties have an impact on physical activity and health is poorly understood. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 132 children 8-13 years of age completed the self-report Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children: 59 amblyopic children, 29 children with strabismus or anisometropia who were never amblyopic or were no longer amblyopic after treatment (nonamblyopic), and 44 control children. Subsets of children in each group also …

Have Deprivation Amblyopia Outcomes Improved for Infants With Unilateral Cataracts?

PURPOSE: An aspiration of modern medicine is for disease treatment to improve progressively. Here we examine outcomes of treatment for monocular deprivation amblyopia, caused by a congenital cataract, at an academic medical center over several decades. The question we addressed was whether outcomes have improved substantially, or whether they have remained stubbornly disappointing. DESIGN: Retrospective, trend study. METHODS: Patients with deprivation amblyopia due to primary monocular congenital cataract removed before 1 year of age were studied. Preoperative and outcome data were collated …

Abnormal Binocular Rivalry Dynamics in Amblyopia: A Potential Diagnostic Marker.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by monocular deficits and interocular suppression. Binocular rivalry, where perception alternates between dissimilar images, is a powerful tool to probe this suppression. However, the dynamics of sustained binocular rivalry remain poorly characterized in amblyopia. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize these dynamics in individuals with amblyopia compared to visually-normal controls. METHODS: Eleven adults with amblyopia and eight controls continuously reported their perception during a binocular rivalry task through…
