A major goal of regenerative medicine is to stimulate tissue regeneration after traumatic injury. We previously discovered that treating digit amputation wounds with BMP2 in neonatal mice stimulates endochondral ossification to regenerate the stump bone. Here we show that treating the amputation wound with BMP9 stimulates regeneration of a synovial joint that forms an articulation with the stump bone. Regenerated structures include a skeletal element lined with articular cartilage and a synovial cavity, and we demonstrate that this response requires the Prg4 gene. Combining BMP2 and BMP9 treat

In patients with occlusive arterial disease of the lower extremity below knee amputation is successful in 75 to 85%. Below knee amputation enables a better and more rapid prosthetic rehabilitation than above knee amputation, even in very old patients. Indication, amputation technique, and postoperative stump management are described in detail.

Stump neuromas and recurrent neuromas are common problems following amputation and neuroma excision, respectively. Epineurial capping by microsuture has been shown to be somewhat effective in the reduction of the size of stump neuromas and in their confinement away from a weightbearing area. The present study shows that epineurial capping by coagulation of the epineurium with a radiofrequency wave Surgitron forms an effective seal around the proximal stumps of severed axons in rats. This seal effectively reduced axon proliferation but did not completely inhibit neuroma formation. Removal of th

A 17-year-old male sustained an amputation of his left arm and a simultaneous complete brachial plexus lesion on the same side. The median nerve was torn nearly completely out of the amputate and the ulnar nerve was avulsed of the stump. The severed extremity was replanted without primary nerve reconstruction. In a further operation three and one-half months later, a neurolysis of the left brachial plexus was performed and the proximal stump of the median nerve was connected to the distal stump of the ulnar nerve using nerve grafts. Two years post trauma the patient has regained sensibility do

An amputation neuroma is a nerve's attempt at repair following amputation. While many are asymptomatic, some present as a painful mass. We describe a patient who, following a forequarter amputation for sarcoma, developed a stump neuroma that was unusual because it was first discovered on a routine chest roentgenogram.

BACKGROUND: Lower Limb amputation remains one of the commonest surgical procedures. The incidence is on the rise in Nigeria due mainly to increasing motorcycle accidents and increased prevalence of uncontrolled diabetes complicated by neuropathy, vasculopathy and diabetic foot gangrene.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the pattern and outcome of lower limb amputations in a private tertiary setting.
METHODS: This was a 10-year retrospective review of lower limb amputations done at Havana Specialist Hospital (HSH), a multi-specialist private hospital in Lagos, Nigeria. Utilizing theatre and ward record

Peripheral neuromas are a prevalent problem following nerve injury or certain surgical interventions like limb amputation. It is important to consider a peripheral neuroma when a patient experiences pain in the innervation area of a peripheral sensory or mixed nerve (branch), especially following trauma or amputation. Adequate recognition of a painful neuroma is crucial to treat patients satisfactorily for their invalidating and chronic symptoms. We want to emphasize that surgical intervention can be an effective and permanent treatment for symptomatic neuromas. The standard surgical treatment

BACKGROUND: Healing after an amputation is a critical step in the recovery process. Delayed wound healing can lead to deconditioning and flexion contractures which reduce a patient's ability to use a prosthesis, ambulate independently, and return to community participation. The purpose of this integrative literature review was to determine the evidence-based physiological factors, comorbidities, postoperative management, and outcome measures associated with healing after transtibial amputation and address how these factors clinically guide readiness for prosthetic intervention.
METHODS: Autho

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To study the influence of biomechanical factors on the character of morphological disorders in the process of reparative regeneration at the end of the residual limb after amputation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: 10 series of experiments on 144 rabbits were conducted. We used myodesis with normal, insufficient and excessive muscle tension, their electrical stimulation, tight and leaky closure of the bone marrow canal. Terms of observation 1, 3, 6 months. The method of research - histological with the filling of vessels with inkgelatin mixture.

RATIONALE: Nephritis can further develop into chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD with calciphylaxis is mainly manifested as necrotic ulcers of terminal tissues or even gangrene in the skin and distal limbs. Patients with CKD have a high risk of developing multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Our patient developed dry gangrene of both feet for 1 month, accompanied by complications, such as anemia, hypoproteinemia, and pulmonary infection. The patient had a history of CKD for 30 years, calciphylaxis for 5 years, and multidrug-resistant bacterial infection for 1 month.

Despite optimistic reports about the results of amputation for advanced vascular disease, the patient's assessment of advantages and disadvantages is seldom acknowledged. A detailed social study of 67 amputees has revealed considerable disparity between the patient's views and those of the medical staff. About a third of the patients are forced to retire from active work by the amputation; about three-quarters report a serious decline in their social activities; only about half are really independent with prostheses in the long term; a quarter report severe and intractable symptoms related to

The occurrence of a symptomatic neuroma on a digital amputation stump, whether traumatic or not, is a frequent complication that affects the patient's quality of life. The objective of this study was to analyze the complications inherent to the various techniques used to manage the nerves when performing digital amputation. We compared different surgical nerve management techniques to determine if one technique is more effective than another in preventing neuroma occurrence. We reviewed 105 patients over a 5-year period. A DN4 score greater than 4 and the modified Tinel test (percussion) showi

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a relatively common disorder involving excessive sweating, typically of the palms or axilla. HH can also frequently occur after limb amputation, where the remaining residual limb excessively perspires, leading to an increased risk of dermatological disorders and functional limitations, such as the inability to comfortably or safely wear a prosthesis. Although many treatments have been proposed to treat HH within the dermatology community, they are not widely known by healthcare providers typically involved in caring for individuals with acquired limb loss.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To study the role and place of bone grafting in the formation of bone stump after amputation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: 3 series of experiments were carried out on 44 rabbits with amputation of the thigh in the middle third and stump grafting using osteoplastic hermetic closure of the canal with a thin cortical plate (series I), closure of the canal with a spongy bone (series II), and loose closure of the canal with a cortical graft located at the entrance to the canal at an angle of 30° (ІІІ series). Observation period: 1, 3, 6 months. Histological exam

A false aneurysm in an amputation stump of the second metacarpal produced a pulsatile mass and throbbing pain. Operative findings disclosed a false aneurysm arising from the digital artery on the radial side of the middle finger, with entrapment of the nerve to the ulnar side of the index digit within the aneurysmal sac. Excision of the aneurysm, relocation of the traumatic neuromas, and amputation of the index ray relieved the symptoms.
