Comparative morphofunctional analysis of axial skeleton excluding the skull of primates based on the anatomical, radiographic, and tomographic description of the black-striped capuchin (Sapajus libidinosus Spix, 1823).

Comparative anatomy the basis for studies of evolution, and radiographic and tomographic aspects, as auxiliary methods in the investigation of anatomical particularities, reinforce evolutionary research. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the vertebrae, sternum, and ribs of the capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus) by means of anatomical dissection and radiographic and tomographic images. To this purpose, four cadavers were used in the anatomical analysis and five living animals for the imaging exams. The bones were described and compared with data from other primates species fou

The cranial base and related internal anatomical features in Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens.

The cranial anatomy of Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens is well documented in the paleoanthropological and medical literature. However, there are few high-quality visual guides of their comparative morphology. We give here a detailed description of the anatomy of two important fossil specimens, La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 and abri Pataud 1, based on high-resolution imaging data with each specimen representing the respective morphologies of H. neanderthalensis and H. sapiens. We describe the comparative morphology of external, endocranial, and internal characteristics of the cranium, with a

Heterodonty in the teeth of the turiasaurian sauropod from Angeac-Charente (Early Cretaceous, southwestern France): Comparison of anatomical and geometric morphometric approaches.

Sauropod teeth are often described within a taxonomic framework, with few studies focusing on heterodonty or intraspecific morphological variation. The Lagerstätte of Angeac-Charente has yielded 167 heart-shaped isolated teeth from a single turiasaurian species. Observations of this material during its collection in the field, preparation, and recording in the collections suggest the presence of possible heterodonty in this species. In this study, we analyze this heterodonty using both comparative anatomy and 3D geometric morphometric analyses coupled with machine learning algorithms. Our prin

The internal larval anatomy of two rodent bot fly species: Cuterebra fontinella (Diptera: Oestridae) and Cuterebra americana.

Species within the genus Cuterebra Clark, 1815 (Diptera: Oestridae: Cuterebrinae) are obligate parasites of rodents and other mammals during the larval stage, causing cutaneous myiasis. The internal larval anatomy of Cuterebra species remains unstudied, despite its potential utility for understanding their parasitic adaptations and for comparative studies with other Oestridae. The present study describes the internal larval anatomy of the species Cuterebra fontinella Clark, 1827 and Cuterebra americana (Fabricius, 1775), using micro-computed tomography-based virtual histological sections and 3

Adaptive Sealing in Protruding LVOT Calcification During TAVR: A 4-Patient Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Protruding left ventricular outflow tract calcification represents a high-risk anatomical feature for transcatheter aortic valve replacement, predisposing to paravalvular regurgitation (PVR), annular injury, and conduction disturbance. CASE SUMMARY: We present 4 patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis and protruding left ventricular outflow tract calcific nodules treated with the Navitor self-expanding valve system. Despite uniformly hostile landing-zone anatomy, procedural success was achieved in all cases. Residual PVR ranged from trivial to mild-to-moderate, with no pa

Normative Velopharyngeal Data in Infants: Implications for Treatment of Cleft Palate.

Identifying normative data related to velopharyngeal muscles and structures may have clinical significance for infants born with cleft palate, especially as they relate to selection of surgical intervention and postsurgical outcomes. Previous studies suggest that patients whose anatomy postsurgically is dissimilar to that of their normative counterparts are at risk for hypernasal speech. However, studies have not documented what constitutes "normal" anatomy for the clinically relevant population-that is, the infant population. The purpose of this study is to examine a magnetic resonance imagin

The axial anatomy of monitor lizards (Varanidae).

Because the musculoskeletal anatomy of the trunk is the framework for the behaviors of locomotion, ventilation, and body support in lepidosaurs, comparative study of trunk anatomy in this group is critical for unraveling the selective pressures leading to extant diversity in axial form and function among vertebrates. This work uses gross dissection and computed tomography to describe the muscular and skeletal anatomy of the trunk of varanid lizards (Varanidae, Anguimorpha). Gross muscle dissections were conducted to investigate the axial muscular anatomy of Varanus exanthematicus, Varanus giga

Cross-over accessory anterior belly of the digastric muscle: a rare anatomical variant with embryological background.

BACKGROUND: The digastric muscle is a key component of the suprahyoid musculature and the floor of the oral cavity. Variants of its anterior belly are reported in up to 10% of cadaveric studies and may present as accessory slips or additional bellies. Such variants are clinically relevant because they may alter surgical anatomy and mimic pathological masses on radiological imaging. Accurate recognition of these configurations is essential for correct diagnosis and safe surgical planning. The aim of this study was to present a rare, isolated unilateral cross-over variant of the anterior belly o

Large-group virtual anatomy via a smart digital podium: a preliminary cross-sectional study of student perspectives toward remote anatomage teaching in a medical lecture hall.

BACKGROUND: The Anatomage virtual dissection table is conventionally deployed in small groups in the dissection laboratory, limiting simultaneous access to one cohort at a time. Remote streaming of the live Anatomage interface over an institutional local area network (LAN) to a smart digital podium in a large lecture theatre-termed Remote Anatomage Teaching (RAT)-represents an unexplored model for scaling virtual anatomy instruction to an entire medical cohort simultaneously. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India. A single integrated basal

The Squamate Clitoris: A Review and Directions for Future Research.

The clitoris is a part of the genitalia of female amniotes that typically functions to stimulate sensory arousal. It usually consists of a small organ that is dimorphic and homologous to the penis. The developing amniote embryo forms a genital tubule, then sex hormones initiate a developmental cascade to form either a penis or clitoris. In squamates (lizards and snakes) the genital tubule develops into a paired hemiphallus structure called the "hemiclitores" in the female and the "hemipenes" in the male. The complex evolution of squamate hemipenes has been extensively researched since early di

Clinical perspectives on nasopharyngeal morphology in humans.

The nasopharynx is an integral component of the upper aerodigestive tract, whose morphologic features share an intimate relationship with a vast array of clinical, functional, and quality of life conditions related to contemporary humans. Its composite architecture and central location amidst the nasal cavity, pharyngotympanic tube, palate, and skull base bears implications for basic physiologic functions including breathing, vocalization, and alimentation. Over the course of evolution, morphological modifications of nasopharyngeal anatomy have occurred in genus Homo which serve to distinguish

Facet joint injections for management of low back pain: a clinically focused review.

Lumbar facet joints have been implicated in chronic low back pain in up to 45% of patients with low back pain (LBP). Facet joint pain diagnosis and management are always challenging for pain physicians. Facet joint pain is not diagnosed by specific demographic features, pain characteristics, or physical findings, even though electrodiagnostic studies and imaging modalities are available. Although comparative local anesthetics or placebo saline injections can be used, diagnostic blocks are the only reliable diagnostic measures according to the current literature. Treatment of chronic LBP arisin

Evidence and Approach for Management of Labral Deficiency: The Role for Labral Reconstruction.

The acetabular labrum is a complex fibrocartilaginous structure with unique anatomy. Its unique anatomy imparts biomechanical functions important in hip stability, synovial fluid dynamics, contact pressure dissipation, proprioception, and nociception. Although the importance of labral preservation through surgical repair techniques has been increasingly recognized, situations do occur where the labrum is either absent, deficient, or simply irreparable. In these situations, both open and arthroscopic reconstructive techniques have been described to help restore the function of the native labral

Early Pliocene hominids from Gona, Ethiopia.

Comparative biomolecular studies suggest that the last common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, lived during the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene. Fossil evidence of Late Miocene-Early Pliocene hominid evolution is rare and limited to a few sites in Ethiopia, Kenya and Chad. Here we report new Early Pliocene hominid discoveries and their palaeoenvironmental context from the fossiliferous deposits of As Duma, Gona Western Margin (GWM), Afar, Ethiopia. Cancer of the oropharynx: classification and natural history.

The development, comparative anatomy, and function of the oropharynx are briefly described. The text book descriptions of the anatomical boundaries of the oropharynx are commented on and an attempt is made to define these boundaries more rigidly and accurately. Although the advantages and limitations of the UICC classification of oropharyngeal cancer is accepted, an alternative classification is suggested based on the function of the site involved rather than its descriptive anatomy. This has resulted in a necessary rearrangement of the tumor sites and subsites. Subdivision into three sites is

First-in-Human Use of Intravascular Lithotripsy to Facilitate Mitral Balloon Commissurotomy After Prior Annuloplasty Band Repair.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe mitral stenosis (MS) after surgical repair often face limited therapeutic options owing to high surgical risk and complex valve anatomy. CASE SUMMARY: A 79-year-old woman with prior surgical mitral valve repair presented with severe MS. Given her high surgical risk and extensive valvular calcification, she was not a candidate for redo surgical mitral valve, percutaneous mitral balloon commissurotomy (PMBC), or transcatheter mitral valve-in-ring. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL)-facilitated PMBC was performed, with postprocedural improvement in gradients and sym

Current updates in nasal bone reshaping.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent studies on nasal osseocartilaginous anatomy, osteotomy techniques and contemporary methods of nasal bone reshaping carried out under direct vision. RECENT FINDINGS: Current cadaver studies on osseocartilaginous vault anatomy, osteotomy techniques provide valuable information that can reduce outcome variability and increase reliability of osteotomies. Nevertheless, osteotomes have limitations and contemporary approaches - namely, piezoelectric instrumentations, osteoectomy, and osteotomy carried out under direct vision - can provide valuable solutions to cer
