Preterm infants, especially those with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) are exposed to frequent blood draws as part of their care in the neonatal intensive care unit. ELBW infants develop the anemia of prematurity (AOP), a hypo-proliferative anemia marked by inadequate production of erythropoietin (Epo). Treatment of AOP includes red blood cell transfusions, which are given to preterm infants based on indications and guidelines (hematocrit/hemoglobin levels, ventilation and oxygen need, apneas and bradycardias, poor weight gain) that are relatively non-specific. In this article we review rece

INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine transfusion (IUT) has changed fetal anemia prognosis. However, long-term neurodevelopmental outcome is altered in 5% of children. Our objective was to study the contribution of fetal MRI to diagnosis brain lesions in case of fetal anemia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective monocentric descriptive study from 2005 to 2016, including all patients followed for fetal anemia requiring IUT. The indications for MRI were: hydrops fetalis and / or hemoglobin <5 g / dL and / or more than 3 IUTs and / or acute severe anemia and / or ultrasound abnormality. Fetal and neonatal o

In a material of 300 cases of Rh incompatibility the clinical course of the hemolytic disease of the newborn was analyzed together with the complications of this disease and perinatal mortality. It was found that the intensity of icterus and the number of necessary exchange transfusions depended mainly on the grade of anemia at the time of birth. Prematurity caused no worsening of neonatal icterus but increased the frequency of complications and mortality. The high mortality of children born with severe anemia points to the necessity of hemotherapy of the fetuses before labor.

The aim of the present study was to enhance the understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal hereditary spherocytosis (HS). Gene sequencing and analysis was performed for the crucial splicing signals on the exons and introns of the 302 known pathogenic genes [including ANK1, SPTAN1, SPTA1, EPB42, SLC4A1, and SPTB] that are associated with this genetic deficiency of erythrocytes. A 26-day-old female presented with jaundice, anemia, an increased count in peripheral blood reticulocyte and spherocytes and a positive acidified glycerol hemolysis test. Gene sequencing revealed a novel mu

The ICR-derived glomerulonephritis (ICGN) mouse, a new inbred mouse strain with a hereditary nephrotic syndrome, is considered to be a good model of human idiopathic nephrotic syndrome and notably exhibits proteinuria and hypoproteinemia from the neonatal stage. In chronic renal disorder (CRD), anemia is a major subsequent symptom (renal anemia). The precise cause of renal anemia remains unclear, primarily owing to the lack of appropriate spontaneous animal models for CRD. To establish adequate animal models for anemia with CRD, we examined the hematological-biochemical properties and histopat

Maternal anemia during pregnancy may adversely affect fetal growth, including neonatal head circumference (HC). This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify predictors of small HC among infants born to women with third-trimester anemia. Secondary data were obtained from the HosXP electronic medical database and delivery records of pregnant women who delivered between October 2020 and September 2023. A total of 934 women met the eligibility criteria and were included in the analysis. Maternal characteristics were summarized using descriptive statistics. Associations between maternal factor

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intracardiac thrombosis (ICT) is an uncommon but increasingly recognized condition that impacts neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially in critically ill term and preterm infants. Management includes supportive care and pharmacological or surgical intervention. This study explores the challenges associated with ICT in neonates.
METHODS: We described the clinical presentation and multidisciplinary management of two cases of intracardiac thrombosis. We also reviewed literature from Medline and PubMed using MeSH terms ("intracardiac thrombosis" AND "newborn").

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of blood sampling from the placental end of the umbilical cord compared with initial blood sampling from neonates, on the need for first packed red blood cell transfusion in extremely preterm infants. We hypothesized that cord blood sampling could delay the time to first blood transfusion.
STUDY DESIGN: In this single-center, assessor blind, randomized controlled trial, we included extremely low birth weight neonates <28 weeks of gestational age at birth. Five milliliter of blood for initial laboratory investigations was collected either from the placental en

Four neonates with adrenal hemorrhage are presented. The clinical manifestations included most often an abdominal mass but also anemia, jaundice, hypotension, bluish discoloration of the scrotum, and abdominal calcification. The diagnosis was established in each case upon abdominal sonographic findings. The review of these patients emphasizes the subtle and diverse clinical presentation of adrenal hemorrhage in a neonate and stresses the importance of abdominal sonography in establishing the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Transient myeloproliferative disorder is a clonal myeloproliferative syndrome that occurs in the presence of mutations in the GATA1 gene and chromosome 21 trisomy. It affects almost exclusively newborns with Down syndrome and usually resolves spontaneously. Neonatal leukemia is a rare childhood disease. Its prognosis is worse. We report a novel case of transient myeloproliferative disorder in a neonate without phenotypic features of Down syndrome, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive genetic diagnostics in atypical presentations.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 4-

BACKGROUND: Erythropoietin (EPO) is an essential growth factor for erythroid cells and is mainly secreted from the kidneys and subsidiarily from the livers of adult mammals in an anemia/hypoxia-inducible manner.
AIM AND METHOD: To elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of stress-inducible and cell type-specific Epo gene transcription, the rate-limiting step of EPO production, we investigated the sufficiency of a 180-kb genomic fragment flanking the mouse Epo gene locus for recapitulating endogenous Epo gene function by a transgene complementation strategy.
KEY FINDINGS: While Epo gene-deficient

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is an erythrocyte membrane disease with a non-specific phenotype, particularly occurring in neonatal patients, and its diagnosis is challenging. The present study reports on a patient with neonatal HS and reviewed the genetic characteristics of reported neonatal HS cases in China. The patient was admitted only a few hours after birth with jaundice. Auxiliary examination indicated anemia and hyperbilirubinemia. Spherical erythrocytes were occasionally observed in peripheral blood smears. Genetic testing suggested that the patient harbored a novel frameshift mutatio

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a congenital disorder of the red blood cell membrane and is characterized by hemolytic anemia, variable jaundice, and splenomegaly. In neonates, the diagnosis of HS can be difficult in the absence of family history. Herein, we describe clinical and molecular genetic findings in a Korean neonate with HS. A one-month-old girl presented with severe anemia and jaundice. Spherocytes were frequently observed on peripheral blood smear, but the erythrocyte osmotic fragility test result was normal. Targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed the patient was heter

Naphthalene poisoning due to exposure to mothballs is a common cause of toxicity in children worldwide. Naphthalene toxicity is known to cause hemolytic anemia, methemoglobinemia, and hepatic and renal injury. Neonates are more susceptible to the effects of oxidative stress from naphthalene because of their low glutathione stores and immaturity of hepatic enzymes. However, there are no reported cases of chronic fetal exposure to naphthalene during pregnancy. We report a novel case of chronic fetal exposure to naphthalene-containing mothballs that occurred from the second trimester through the
