BACKGROUND: Anthrax is a priority zoonotic disease in Uganda. Despite health education about risks of eating meat from animals found dead, some areas including Kazo District, experience repeated anthrax outbreaks associated with this practice. We assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) around anthrax and consumption of meat of animals found dead in previously-affected communities in Kazo District.
METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted in six villages in Kazo District from May 23-June 4, 2022. Structured questionnaires were administered to 200 systematically-sampled commu

Animal bites are a reality of life throughout the world. They arise out of an imperfect relationship with domestic animals and wildlife. Most bite injuries are preventable. The principal approaches to community-wide bite prevention programs include reducing the number of domestic animals roaming in the community (animal control) and teaching people to refrain from behaviors likely to provoke bites. This article addresses the epidemiologic basis and justification for a bite prevention program targeted toward children. Animal bite data from Indiana for the years 1990, 1991, and 1992 were analyze

A total of 458 cows, oxen, and calves (up to the second year of age) were studied over the 1971-1973 period. The animals were slaughtered at the abattoir of the town of Bourgas, originating from 59 communities on the territory of Bourgas district where the field and feeding conditions varied. Samples were taken from the gullet, tongue, pharynx, diaphragm, cervical muscles, and heart, using the compression slide method to demonstrate the presence of microcysts. Sarcosporidia were found in 398 animals as follows: cows and oxen involved--99.11 per cent; calves--75.53 per cent. The average value f

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the significance of the human-animal interface in the emergence of zoonotic diseases, with wildlife serving as an important source of infection. A better understanding of the specific pathogens and mechanisms involved is vital to prepare against future outbreaks, especially in Southeast Asia, a hotspot for zoonotic diseases. This paper reviews the published literature on wildlife zoonoses in this region from 2012 to 2022. The results show a diverse range of potential zoonotic pathogens and the widespread occurrence of zoonotic diseases from wildlife. Driv

In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to describe differences between India and the United States in public perceptions of free-roaming dogs and cats, concerns related to free-roaming animals, and preferred strategies for veterinary medical interventions and population management. Between August 2021 and February 2022, 498 individuals completed an online survey including 210 Indian respondents and 288 American respondents. Free-roaming dogs and cats were largely perceived as community animals among Indian respondents, with significantly more respondents indicating they should be allowed to r

Animal models are a critical element of ocular surface research for investigating therapeutic drops, surgical implants, and infection research. This study was a comparative analysis of the microbial communities on conjunctival tissue samples from humans compared to several commonly used laboratory animals (BALB/c mice, New Zealand white rabbits and IMVS colored stock guinea pigs). Microbial communities were analyzed by extracting total DNA from conjunctival tissue and sequencing the 16 S rRNA gene using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Sequences were quality filtered using the UNOISE pipeline in U

BACKGROUND: Amphimerus sp. is a liver fluke which recently has been shown to have a high prevalence of infection among an indigenous group, Chachi, who reside in a tropical rainforest in the northwestern region of Ecuador. Since it is unknown which animals can act as a reservoir and/or definitive hosts for Amphimerus sp. in this endemic area, a study was done to determine the prevalence of infection in domestic cats and dogs. This information is important to understand the epidemiology, life cycle and control of this parasite.
METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: In July 2012, three Chachi communities locat

Abnormalities in dopamine production and receptor function have been described in human essential hypertension and rodent models of genetic hypertension. Under normal conditions, D(1)-like receptors (D(1) and D(5)) inhibit sodium transport in the kidney and intestine. However, in the Dahl salt-sensitive and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and in humans with essential hypertension, the D(1)-like receptor-mediated inhibition of epithelial sodium transport is impaired because of an uncoupling of the D(1)-like receptor from its G protein/effector complex. The uncoupling is receptor specific

Microbial communities populate the mucosal surfaces of all animals. Metazoans have co-evolved with these microorganisms, forming symbioses that affect the molecular and cellular underpinnings of animal physiology. These microorganisms, collectively referred to as the microbiota, are found on many distinct body sites (including the skin, nasal cavity, and urogenital tract), however the most densely colonized host tissue is the intestinal tract. Although spatially confined within the intestinal lumen, the microbiota and associated products shape the development and function of the host immune sy

Leptospira spp., which comprise 3 clusters (pathogenic, saprophytic, and intermediate) that vary in pathogenicity, infect >1 million persons worldwide each year. The disease burden of the intermediate leptospires is unclear. To increase knowledge of this cluster, we used new molecular approaches to characterize Leptospira spp. in 464 samples from febrile patients in rural, semiurban, and urban communities in Ecuador; in 20 samples from nonfebrile persons in the rural community; and in 206 samples from animals in the semiurban community. We observed a higher percentage of leptospiral DNA-positi

We describe challenges and opportunities during the mpox virus animal reservoir surveillance expedition to the Mkpot community in Nigeria, a remote enclave in the heart of the Cross River rainforest that is replete with viral and ecological footprints. Anecdotal evidence of mpox in Mkpot and adjoining villages, and the absence of domestic animals where wild animal hunting and consumption is intense, suggests potential spillover of infections at the human-animal interface, requiring active surveillance and monitoring.

A longitudinal demonstration project was carried out in 2005/2006 for thirteen months to determine the effectiveness of a strategic community-based worm control (CBWC) programme in the control of gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes and Fasciola gigantica in cattle. Two villages namely, a CBWC village (Ilula-Masukanzi) and a village without CBWC (Kilolo-Luganga) were randomly selected in Kilolo district, Iringa region of Tanzania. Animals in both villages were under the traditional management system and used the village communal grazing area. At the village with CBWC, 60 zebu cattle (6-18 months ol

Public health ethics provides a framework for ensuring disease prevention efforts are equitable and just. The One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health, has gained importance in managing emerging diseases. However, its ethical application in marginalized communities remains underexplored. Many of these communities-such as low-income groups, Indigenous populations, and racial minorities-face historical injustices, structural barriers, and inadequate access to preventive healthcare. Additionally, mistrust in public health institutio

BACKGROUND: As demand for specialised veterinary care increases, referrals between first opinion practices and specialty clinics are becoming an increasingly important part of the chain of care. However, care pathways between these two settings can involve multiple transitions back and forth, each representing a potential opportunity for error or information loss. Issues such as communication failures, lack of information transfer, and delayed discharge letters back to the first opinion practice may occur, potentially compromising continuity and quality of care. Characterising veterinary surge

Respiratory viral infections pose persistent global health threats, yet traditionalin vitroand animal models inadequately recapitulate human tissue microenvironments. Organ-on-a-chip technology integrates microfluidic engineering with cell biology to recreate three-dimensional architectures, mechanical forces, and multicellular interactions of the human respiratory system. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in organ-on-a-chip platforms for modeling respiratory viral infections and host immune responses. We highlight their unique capabilities in simulating alveolar-capillary

The pig is the most widely consumed domestic animal in China, providing over half of the meat supply in food markets. For livestock, a key economic trait is the reproductive performance, which is significantly influenced by placental development. The placenta, a temporary fetal organ, is crucial for establishing maternal-fetal communication and supporting fetal growth throughout pregnancy. DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that can regulate the gene expression by recruiting proteins involved in gene silencing or preventing transcription factor binding. Alopecia is considered a widespread yet troubling health issue, with limited treatment options. As membranous structures derived from cells carrying proteins, nucleic acids and lipids, exosomes functionally medicate intercellular communication and alter the responses of recipient cells, resulting in disease restraint or promotion. Exosomes have broad prospects in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Studies using animal models and at the cellular level have clearly shown that exosomes from several types of cells, including dermal papilla cells and mesenchymal stem cells, have a notable capacit
