BACKGROUND: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has emerged as an essential tool in characterizing neoplastic diseases, playing a crucial role in both human and veterinary medicine. Despite the increased demand for specific diagnoses in veterinary oncology, the full potential of IHC has been hampered by the reduced number of specific cross-reactive antibodies recognising their antigens in diverse animal species. This study addresses this limitation by testing the cross-reactivity of a panel of 69 antibodies, including one in-house generated monoclonal antibody, using IHC on routinely fixed formalin-fix

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is the clinical manifestation of infection of certain ruminant species with one of a group of pathogenic gammaherpesviruses known as MCF viruses. Cattle and numerous exotic ruminant species are susceptible to clinical disease that may be sporadic or occasionally epidemic in nature. The most common MCF virus worldwide is ovine herpesvirus (OvHV)-2. Reservoir hosts such as sheep, carry and excrete OvHV-2, but do not develop clinical signs, while clinically susceptible species develop severe and often fatal disease. The existence of latent infection in clinically s

A 3-year-old male scarlet macaw parrot (Ara macao) was presented to the Exotic Animal Clinic at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Iași University of Life Sciences (Iași, Romania) for its postmortem examination. According to the owner, the parrot had been raised only in captivity and after 5 days of inappetence, lethargy, and mild respiratory clinical signs, the parrot died. The post mortem examination revealed various-sized granulomas and caseous plaques in the lungs, air sacs, spleen, intestinal serosa, and liver. Microscopically, the granulomas were characterized by a necrotic center and t

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause serious infections in both humans and animals, including dogs. Treatment of this bacterium is challenging because some strains have developed multi-drug resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance patterns and biofilm production of clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa obtained from dogs. The study found that resistance to various β-lactam antimicrobials was widespread, with cefovecin and ceftiofur showing resistance in 74% and 59% of the isolates tested, respectively. Among the aminoglycosides, all strains

OBJECTIVE: To identify the acari present on pet Burmese pythons in Malaysia and to determine whether there is any potential public health risk related to handling of the snakes.
METHODS: Two sub-adult Burmese pythons kept as pets for a period of about 6 to 7 months by different owners, were brought to an exotic animal practice for treatment. On a complete medical examination, some ticks and mites (acari) were detected beneath the dorsal and ventral scales along body length of the snakes. Ticks were directly identified and mites were mounted prior to identification.
RESULTS: A total of 12 tic

Zoonotic pathogens from companion and exotic pets include viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, all of which pose significant risks to public health. Among these, potential zoonotic intestinal parasites represent an important subgroup, commonly found in various animals and capable of causing diseases. Data on potential zoonotic intestinal parasites prevalence and diversity in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) remain limited. In this research, 250 fecal samples from sugar gliders were randomly collected between June 2024 and August 2025 in Shanghai, China. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) wa

Increased international travel and importation of animals brings with it the potential for spread of infectious diseases. This report details a case in which an 8-month-old male mixed breed dog died shortly after arrival to the United States from complications secondary to spirocercosis, despite having been deemed healthy and approved for international travel. Four weeks following arrival, the dog developed mild tachypnea and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed moderate pyrexia with generalized cerebellar ataxia, moderate anemia, a mature neutrophilia, and severe panhypoproteinemia. Packed

With an increasing frequency of traveling and tourism to exotic countries, a new threat-import of rare, very dangerous infections-emerges in humane medicine. Ebola fever and Marburg fever, whose agents come from the same group of Filoviridae family, belong among these diseases. The natural reservoir of these viruses has not yet been precisely determined. The pathogenesis of the diseases is not absolutely clear, there is neither a possibility of vaccination, nor an effective treatment. Fever and haemorrhagic diathesis belong to the basic symptoms of the diseases. Most of the infected persons di

There are many strains of the agents that cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or 'prion' diseases. These strains are distinguishable by their disease characteristics in experimentally infected animals, in particular the incubation periods and neuropathology they produce in panels of inbred mouse strains. We have shown that the strain of agent from cattle affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) produces a characteristic pattern of disease in mice that is retained after experimental passage through a variety of intermediate species. This BSE 'signature' has also bee

Bone has long served as a versatile raw material in human societies due to its durability, workability, and availability. However, identifying the animal species used in worked bone artifacts remains challenging, as manufacturing processes and use-wear often remove diagnostic morphological features. This study applies Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) to investigate raw material selection in textile-related bone tools from Augusta Emerita (Mérida, Spain), the capital of Roman Lusitania, dating to the 1st - 3rd centuries CE. The archaeological context of the assemblage is particularly

The establishment of community-based breeding programs necessitates the identification of prevalent breeding practices and the characterization of associated production systems. This study investigates the breeding and production conditions of Red Sindhi, Cholistani, and non-descript cattle across four districts in Punjab, Pakistan. Data were collected through a field survey utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 450 randomly selected farmers. The findings reveal that the majority of respondents were male and served as the primary decision-makers in their households. A signi

Longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is an invasive tick species that parasitizes a variety of vertebrate hosts and transmits pathogens affecting humans and livestock in the United States (US). Unfortunately, the behaviour of this tick at the wildlife–livestock interface is not well understood. To better understand how H. longicornis uses wildlife hosts and interacts with established tick species on farm settings we sampled small and medium wildlife seasonally for a year, using Sherman and Tomahawk traps, on three H. longicornis-infested cattle farms in eastern Tennessee. We confirmed t

Acute gastrointestinal disorders (AGIDs) of presumed infectious origin are common illnesses and among the most frequent infective diseases referred to hospital. Much is known about the diagnosis and aetiology of AGIDs, but relatively little work appears to have been done regarding the assessment of relevant general practitioner (GP) history-taking and the potential for under-recognition of sources such as zoonoses. Established sources of zoonosis (for example exotic pet-keeping, farmyards and zoological parks) seem either rarely considered or annotated. Surveillance of food-borne illness and i

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton benhamiae, an anthropophilic dermatophyte, can cause dermatophytosis in humans and animals with rising zoonotic infections through pets, primarily in Europe. Dermatophytosis from T. benhamiae is often misdiagnosed due to its inflammatory symptoms. We report a case of tinea corporis from T. benhamiae var. luteum in a Japanese woman, contracted from pet Czech degus.
CASE: The 40-year-old patient developed neck papules resembling acne. Initial treatment with topical antibiotics and steroids exacerbated the rash. Fungal elements were not detected by direct potassium hydro

The naturalization of alien Reeves's muntjacs (Muntiacus reevesi) on Izu-Oshima Island, Tokyo, Japan, has proceeded intensively over the last five decades. To clarify whether the gastrointestinal helminths of these animals were brought from their original endemic area or were newly acquired in Japan, 32 Reeves's muntjacs trapped on the island were parasitologically examined. In addition to Gongylonema pulchrum in the oesophagus (34.4% prevalence), Chabaudstrongylus ninhae (Dróżdż, 1967) (Trichostrongylidae: Cooperiinae) and Oesophagostomum muntiacum Jian, 1989 (Chabertiidae: Oesophagostominae)

Brucellosis is an important zoonosis caused by Brucella spp., still prevalent in most areas of the world. Brucellosis control in animals is the key to protect humans. The knowledge of Brucella spp. prevailing genotypes in a territory represents an important epidemiological tool to formulate policies and strategies for disease control and to trace back the introduction of new strains previously considered as exotic. In the last years, multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) has been proposed as complementary to classical biotyping methods. MLVA may add important information
