Decrease by psychotropic drugs and local anaesthetics of membrane fluidity measured by fluorescence anisotropy in Escherichia coli.

The effects of psychotropic drugs and local anaesthetics on the fluidity of Escherichia coli cell membranes were examined. Chlorpromazine was shown to increase 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence anisotropy, indicating that it decreased the membrane fluidity. This increase was significant at a temperature of more than 24 degrees C. Dibucaine, lignocaine, imipramine, tetracaine and procaine also increased the fluorescence anisotropy.

Dominance of shape anisotropy in a CrOCl monolayer enables deterministic strain switching of the magnetic easy axis.

A CrOCl monolayer is a two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor successfully synthesized in recent years, but the origin and tunability of its magnetic anisotropy have not been systematically studied. Our calculations reveal a pronounced triaxial anisotropy in the CrOCl monolayer, establishing the y-axis as the easy axis, with the z- and x-axes serving as the intermediate and hard axes, respectively. Our core finding is that shape anisotropy arising from the long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interaction plays a dominant role in the total magnetic anisotropy energy, exceeding the contributio

Characteristics of T2* and anisotropy parameters in inguinal and epididymal adipose tissues after cold exposure in mice.

White adipose tissue (WAT) in mice undergoes browning in response to cold exposure. Brown and beige adipocytes contain multilocular lipid droplets and abundant iron-containing mitochondria expressing uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1). Cold exposure-induced browning WAT is accompanied by increased density of blood vessels and sympathetic nerve fibres. A previous study reported a more than threefold increase in sympathetic nerve dendritic tone in inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) after cold exposure. Therefore, we hypothesized that water molecule diffusion would be more restricted in brown and bei

Slow Magnetic Relaxation of Dy Adatoms with In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy on a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas.

We report on the magnetic properties of Dy atoms adsorbed on the (001) surface of SrTiO3. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals slow relaxation of the Dy magnetization on a time scale of about 800 s at 2.5 K, unusually associated with an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. We attribute these properties to Dy atoms occupying hollow adsorption sites on the TiO2-terminated surface. Conversely, Ho atoms adsorbed on the same surface show paramagnetic behavior down to 2.5 K. With the help of atomic multiplet simulations and first-principles calculations, we establish that Dy populates also the top-O

The preliminary evaluation of a 1 MHz ultrasound probe for measuring the elastic anisotropy of human cortical bone.

Our objective is to evaluate an ultrasound probe for measurements of velocity and anisotropy in human cortical bone (tibia). The anisotropy of cortical bone is a known and mechanically relevant property in the context of osteoporotic fracture risk. Current in vivo quantitative ultrasound devices measuring the velocity of ultrasound in long bones can only be applied in the axial direction. For anisotropy measurements a second direction for velocity measurements preferably perpendicular to the axial direction is necessary. We developed a new ultrasound probe which permits axial transmission meas

The effect of sex and handedness on white matter anisotropy: a diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging study.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging provides a way of assessing the asymmetry of white matter (WM) connectivity, the degree of anisotropic diffusion within a given voxel being a marker of coherently bundled myelinated fibers. Voxel-based statistical analysis was performed on fractional anisotropy (FA) images of 42 right- and 40 left-handers, to assess differences in underlying WM anisotropy and FA asymmetry across the whole brain. Right-handers show greater anisotropy than left-handers in the uncinate fasciculus (UF) within the limbic lobe, and WM underlying prefrontal cortex, medial a

Fronto-thalamo-striatal gray and white matter volumes and anisotropy of their connections in bipolar spectrum illnesses.

BACKGROUND: Neurons in the basal ganglia are connected to areas of prefrontal cerebral cortex involved in higher cognitive functions, and these connections occur primarily via the thalamus. In patients with bipolar disorder, regardless of age, neuroimaging studies have consistently reported an increased number of white matter hyperintensities, indicating possible alterations in striatum-thalamus and thalamus-prefrontal cortex connections. METHODS: In the current study, we acquired high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor (DT) scans of 40 patients with bipolar spec

Synergistic Pyro-Phototronics and Structural Anisotropy in CsAg2I3/GaN Heterostructures for High-Performance Polarization-Sensitive UV Photodetectors.

Ultraviolet photodetectors capable of spectral selectivity, self-powered operation, and polarization sensitivity are vital for next-generation secure communication and sensing, yet their progress is hampered by material instability, interfacial losses, and the difficulty of multifunctional integration. Here, we report a groundbreaking CsAg2I3/GaN van der Waals (vdWs) heterojunction that uniquely integrates in-plane structural anisotropy, pronounced pyro-phototronic effect, and atomically sharp interface engineering. The CsAg2I3 single-crystals, synthesized via chemical vapor deposition, exhibi

Impact of Annealing on Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy and Interfacial Diffusion in Ultrathin [CoFeB/Pd]×n Multilayer Film.

The multilayers of Ta/Pd/[CoFeB (0.3 nm)/Pd]×5/Pd films were fabricated by ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) magnetron sputtering and subsequently annealed at temperatures (TA) ranging from 100 °C to 400 °C. The magnetic measurements were performed with the applied field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the film plane to evaluate the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy (PMA). A maximum effective PMA energy density (Keff) of ≈7.82 × 105 erg/cc and a small out-of-plane saturation magnetisation (Ms⟂) were achieved at the optimal TA. The evolution of PMA is associated with interfacial atomic migration an

Magnetochiral Anisotropy in Josephson Diode Effect of All-Metallic Lateral Junctions with Interfacial Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling.

We explore the role of interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the Josephson diode effect in all-metal diffusive Josephson junctions. Devices with Fe/Pt and Cu/Pt weak links between Nb leads reveal a Josephson diode effect in an in-plane magnetic field with magnetochiral anisotropy according to the point symmetry of Rashba SOC. The Rashba SOC originates from inversion symmetry breaking at the metal-metal interfaces. A control sample with a plain Cu layer as weak link, in contrast, exhibits an axis-symmetric diode effect. The Fraunhofer patterns display an apparent inverted hysteresis

Carbon cage confinement enhances magnetic anisotropy of single-molecule magnets Dy2O@C3v-C82 and Dy2S@C3v-C82.

This study investigates the structural and magnetic properties of endohedral metallofullerenes Dy2O@C3v-C82 and Dy2S@C3v-C82 through DFT and CASSCF methods. The results show that Dy2O@C3v-C82 exhibits a longer quantum tunneling of magnetization relaxation time and a higher effective energy barrier (Ueff) compared to Dy2S@C3v-C82. The rigid carbon cage framework enhances the local crystal field with strong axial anisotropy, effectively suppressing contributions from transverse fields and thereby inhibiting quantum tunneling of magnetization. Dynamic structure analysis shows that the encapsulate

Quantitative assessment of the alignment between human trabecular microstructural orientation and mechanical anisotropy: Implications for Wolff's Law.

Trabecular bone exhibits a highly organized microarchitecture that adapts to its mechanical loading environment, a concept fundamentally described by Wolff's law. However, direct quantitative evidence linking the trabecular microstructural orientation with mechanical anisotropy remains limited. In this study, we quantitatively assessed the alignment between trabecular microstructural orientation and the apparent stiffness tensor using a micro-CT-based finite element (μFE) framework. Fabric tensors and the orientations of individual trabecular plates and rods were derived using the Mean Interce

Transient Anisotropy-Undercooling Coupling in Dendritic Solidification: Grid-Qualified Phase-Field Ensembles and Finite Element Cross Verification.

Interfacial anisotropy and undercooling control dendritic growth, but numerical artifacts often distort their apparent effects. To address this, we reimplemented the nondimensional Kobayashi model using isotropic nine-point operators, full-interface sub-grid tip tracking, and a grid-independent seed. Our balanced 4 × 4 study explored undercooling (Δ = 0.4-1.0) and sixfold anisotropy (δ = 0-0.025) across 160 simulations at Δx = 0.01333 and Δt = 2.5 × 10-5. Because extended runs continuously decelerated, we reported common-time late-window kinetics (t = 0.054-0.090). Undercooling accounted for 8

Finite Element Model of the Effect of Optic Nerve Sheath Anisotropy on Ocular Loading During Horizontal Duction.

Previous models of extraocular mechanics have often assumed isotropic properties for ocular tissues, despite evidence indicating anisotropy in the optic nerve sheath (ONS). To investigate this further, we developed a finite element model (FEM) of horizontal eye rotation using MRI data from a living subject with normal tension glaucoma. Mechanical properties were derived from tensile tests on 17 post-mortem human eyes, revealing previously unrecognized anisotropic characteristics in the ONS. We simulated ±32° horizontal eye rotations and compared isotropic versus anisotropic ONS properties usin

Two-dimensional multiferroic RuClF/AgBiP2S6 van der Waals heterostructures with valley splitting properties and controllable magnetic anisotropy.

The investigation of new properties in two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic heterostructures is significant. In this work, the electronic properties and magnetic anisotropy energies (MAEs) of 2D multiferroic RuClF/AgBiP2S6 van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are systematically studied by first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The Hubbard on-site Coulomb parameter (U) of Ru atoms is necessary to account for the strong correlation among the three-dimensional electrons of Ru. Chondrocyte hypertrophy in the growth plate promotes stress anisotropy affecting long bone development through chondrocyte column formation.

The length of long bones is determined by column formation of proliferative chondrocytes and subsequent chondrocyte hypertrophy in the growth plate during bone development. Despite the importance of mechanical loading in long bone development, the mechanical conditions of the cells within the growth plate, such as the stress field, remain unclear owing to the difficulty in investigating spatiotemporal changes within dynamically growing tissues. In this study, the mechanisms of longitudinal bone growth were investigated from a mechanical perspective through column formation of proliferative cho

Alterations of fractional anisotropy throughout cortico-basal ganglia gray matter in a macaque model of Huntington's Disease.

We recently generated a nonhuman primate (NHP) model of the neurodegenerative disorder Huntington's disease (HD) using adeno-associated viral vectors to express a fragment of mutant HTT protein (mHTT) throughout the cortico-basal ganglia circuit. Previous work by our group established that mHTT-treated NHPs exhibit progressive motor and cognitive phenotypes which are accompanied by mild volumetric reductions of cortical-basal ganglia structures and reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) in the white matter fiber pathways interconnecting these regions, mirroring findings observed in early-stage HD

Elucidate interfacial disorder effects on the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at Fe/MgO heterostructure from first-principles calculations.

The interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) plays a key role in spintronic applications such as memory recording and computational devices. Despite robust PMA being reported at the Fe/MgO interface, there are still inconsistencies in the disorder effects on the interfacial magnetic anisotropy. Here we reported a comprehensive study of the influence of the interfacial disorder, including the underoxidization, overoxidization, and oxygen migration, on the PMA of the Fe/MgO interface using first-principles calculations. Compared to the pristine Fe/MgO interface, the underoxidation at
