Original Article Phytotherapy in Adults With Recurrent Uncomplicated Cystitis.

BACKGROUND: Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are among the commonest bacterial infections. Because antibiotic resistance is on the rise, there is growing interest in alternative, non-antimicrobial treatment options. This systematic review presents the current evidence on phytotherapy for the treatment and prevention of recurrent uncomplicated cystitis. METHODS: A systematic search of the relevant literature from January 2011 to August 2021 was carried out in the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases and in two clinical trial registries. The trials included in the present revie

Effect on the human normal microflora of oral antibiotics for treatment of urinary tract infections.

Oral administration of antibiotics for treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause ecological disturbances in the normal intestinal microflora. Poorly absorbed drugs can reach the colon in active form, suppress susceptible microorganisms and disturb the ecological balance. Suppression of the normal microflora may lead to reduced colonization resistance with subsequent overgrowth of pre-existing, naturally resistant microorganisms, such as yeasts and Clostridium difficile. New colonization by resistant potential pathogens may also occur and may spread within the body or to other pati

Polyomavirus Wakes Up and Chooses Neurovirulence.

JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) is a human-specific polyomavirus that establishes a silent lifelong infection in multiple peripheral organs, predominantly those of the urinary tract, of immunocompetent individuals. In immunocompromised settings, however, JCPyV can infiltrate the central nervous system (CNS), where it causes several encephalopathies of high morbidity and mortality. JCPyV-induced progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a devastating demyelinating brain disease, was an AIDS-defining illness before antiretroviral therapy that has "reemerged" as a complication of immunomodulating

Antibiotics prophylaxis at the time of catheter removal after radical prostatectomy: a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To conduct a systematic literature review with meta-analysis to identify whether antibiotic prophylaxis after removal of the indwelling urinary catheter reduces posterior infections. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted in the databases PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, using the keywords "antibiotics" AND "prostatectomy" AND "urinary catheter." RESULTS: Three articles were identified having the scope of our review, with 1,040 patients, which were subjected to our meta-analysis revealing a marginal

Treatment Delay of Febrile Urinary Tract Infections Among Infants With Respiratory Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether antibiotic treatment of febrile urinary tract infection (UTI) is delayed in febrile infants with respiratory symptoms compared with those without. STUDY DESIGN: Data of infants 2-24 months of age diagnosed with UTI from March 1, 2012 to May 31, 2023 were collected from our hospital's medical charts and triage records. Patients with known congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract or a history of febrile UTI were excluded. Patients were classified as having respiratory symptoms if they had any of the following symptoms or clinical signs: cough, rhinorrh

Prevalence, impact, and management strategies for asymptomatic bacteriuria in the acute care elderly patient: a review of the current literature.

Introduction: It is unclear how to prevent the negative impact of inappropriate urine cultures in older acute care patients who have a high rate of asymptomatic bacteriuria.Areas covered: A nonsystematic literature review of the definition, impact, and management of elderly acute care patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB).Expert opinion: In the elderly, patients with ASB include those with extra-urinary tract diseases (e.g. pneumonia) and those with symptoms/signs that resolve without antibiotic therapy, but the diagnosis of ASB is unclear in febrile patients responding to antibiotics.

[Purple Urine Bag Syndrome: A Rare Clinical Case].

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a rare syndrome characterized by production of indigo (blue) and indirubin (red) pigments due to bacterial colonization in urinary catheter. The pathogenesis of PUBS is related to the combination of these two pigments produced from the metabolism of tryptophan. Tryptophan turns into indole by deamination, indole turns into indoxyl sulphate by hepatic conjugation and indoxyl sulphate is secreted into urine. Sulphatases and phosphatases enzymes produced by bacteria like Providencia stuartii and Providencia rettgeri, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Es

A case of bladder and colonic duplication.

Duplication of the bladder is a rare congenital anomaly with an unknown embryological basis. A 12-year-old boy with dysuria was found to have a tri-radiate external urethral meatus instead of a vertical slit. Cystourethroscopy revealed two bladders with bifid proximal urethra. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed duplication of colon and bladder. He did not have any symptoms related to the urinary tract.

[Indwelling catheters in the bladder are often associated with problems. Complications are difficult to prevent and alleviate].

Long-term indwelling catheters are often associated with complications in the form of pain, concrement formation, outflow obstruction and symptomatic infections. The methods used to alleviate the situation are often ineffective and as for chlorhexidine bladder washouts without any effect documented by scientific studies. The best way to avoid catheter-associated complications is to, as far as possible, avoid long-time use of them.

Bacterial adherence to ofloxacin-blended polylactone-coated self-reinforced L-lactic acid polymer urological stents.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether ofloxacin coating has any effect on bacterial adherence to bioresorbable self-reinforced L-lactic acid polymer (SR-PLLA) urological stents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SR-PLLA stents were coated with epsilon-caprolactone/L-lactide copolymer blended with ofloxacin at three different concentrations of ofloxacin (0.5, 2 and 5% w/w). The adherence of five bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus mirabilis and two strains of Escherichia coli) to the coated SR-PLLA stents was analysed. Uncoated stent pieces were used as controls. The effec

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from urinary tract infections (1986). III. Secular changes in susceptibility].

Changes in the susceptibility of various infectious microorganisms to antimicrobial agents from 1982 to 1986 were evaluated. The microorganisms investigated were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp., Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from patients with urinary tract infections. We compared susceptibilities of microorganisms obtained from simple urinary tract infections with those from complicated infections with or without indwelling catheter. Among penicillins, mecillinam (MPC) showed the strongest activity against E. coli

Advances in the treatment of urinary tract infection.

Single dose treatment regimens are currently the treatment of choice in women with acute urethrocystitis. Women who have concomitant asymptomatic renal infections will have a recurrence and require further investigation and more conventional 14-day treatment regimens. Single dose treatment is a specific and moderately sensitive diagnostic aid for women with urinary infection. Further carefully planned studies are required to determine optimal treatment regimens for women with renal infection and men with infections originating in the kidneys or prostate.

Medical management of male and female cats with nonobstructive lower urinary tract disease.

This case is typical of recurrent urolithiasis managed by repeated surgery. Retrospective assessment of the disorder indicates the need for quantitative analyses of uroliths removed by cystotomy. Compliance of the owners with recommendations to minimize recurrent urolithiasis might have been beneficial. Results of medical therapy designed to induce dissolution of uroliths in this case are representative of preliminary findings of medical dissolution of naturally occurring struvite uroliths in ten other cats. It is of interest that the uroliths dissolved even though no effort was made to induce
