Ant-plant mutualisms are typically framed as two-species exchanges in which plants provide food and shelter in return for herbivore defense. Yet ants are themselves valuable prey, potentially attracting vertebrate predators that impose hidden structural costs on host plants. Here, I argue that such interactions incur partner-associated indirect costs: plants may suffer damage not from their partners directly, but because those partners attract vertebrate predators. Using the Azteca-Cecropia mutualism as a focal example, I synthesize evidence that anteaters and woodpeckers excavate ant-occupied…

Ants (Formicidae) represent an ecologically dominant terrestrial lineage, yet resolving their deep phylogenetic relationships requires extensive taxon sampling. In this study, we sequenced four new ant mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) and assembled 34 others from public genomic data. Combining these with published sequences yielded a broad dataset of 215 species representing all 17 recognized subfamilies. Three of the four newly sequenced mitogenomes were complete and contained the canonical set of 37 genes, all exhibiting a strong A+T bias. Notably, three species displayed distinct gene re…

INTRODUCTION: Adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT), phosphate translocase (PiT), and uncoupling proteins (UCPs), all integral to oxidative phosphorylation, are among the carrier proteins of the mitochondrial inner membrane (MIM). While traditionally thought to function as monomers, their close proximity within the densely packed MIM suggests potential mutual interactions and formation of homo- and/or hetero-oligomers, the physiological implications of which are yet to be understood.
METHODS: We investigated the conformations and proton transport activity of ANT1, PiT, UCP2 and UCP4 individual

Post-cognitivist approaches recognize cognition as a phenomenon that involves not just brains but all the sensorimotor apparatus of organism … he best places for fungal dispersal. We examine case studies where Ophiocordyceps spp. fungi induce ants to seek bright places in the forest. In this case, the fungus may be using the ant's sensorial and motoric apparatus to locate the places appropriate for its reproduction. This could be a remarkable example of extended cognition of a non-neural orga …

INTRODUCTION: Postmortem activity by necrophagous insects, particularly ants, usually produces yellowish, hard, small excoriated skin lesions with serpiginous margins that lack bleeding. However, in rare cases, they can cause extensive bleeding and produce unusual skin lesions, particularly in deaths due to asphyxia, which may raise suspicion of foul play. This can also make it difficult to differentiate between postmortem and antemortem injuries during forensic examinations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old Indian male anaesthesiology resident was found dead in his hostel room, having allege…

Background/Objectives: Since we started endoscopic stapes surgery, we have frequently noticed a white spot (WS) with a clear boundary on the bone surface around the fissula ante fenestrum (FAF) in otosclerosis cases. We investigated the significance of this surgical finding. Methods: We enrolled 27 cases of otosclerosis and 28 control cases of conductive hearing loss due to pathologies other than otosclerosis, both operated on endoscopically at the University of Tokyo Hospital. We retrospectively reviewed surgical videos to determine whether WS was present or absent. We examined the incidence

Mechanical grasping and holding devices depend upon a firm and controlled grip. The possibility to improve this gripping performance is severely limited by the need for miniaturization in many applications, such as robotics, microassembly, or surgery. In this paper, we show how this gripping can be improved in one application (the endoscopic needle holder) by understanding and imitating the design principles that evolution has selected to make the mandibles of an ant a powerful natural gripping device. State-of-the-art kinematic, morphological, and engineering approaches show that the ant, in

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin condition with relatively few therapeutic alternatives. These include corticosteroids, which address inflammation but not superinfection, and Januse kinase (JAK) inhibitors, which have a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) black box for potential carcinogenicity.
METHODS: We demonstrate that S14, a synthetic derivative of ant venom-derived solenopsin, has potent anti inflammatory effects on the OVA murine model of atopic dermatitis. S14 has demonstrated prior activity in murine psoriasis and has the benefit of ceramide anti-inflammatory ef

BACKGROUND: Eusociality is widely considered to evolve through kin selection, where the reproductive success of an individual's close relative is favored at the expense of its own. High genetic relatedness is thus considered a prerequisite for eusociality. While ants are textbook examples of eusocial animals, not all ants form colonies of closely related individuals. One such example is the ectatommine ant Rhytidoponera metallica, which predominantly forms queen-less colonies that have such a low intra-colony relatedness that they have been proposed to represent a transient, unstable form of e…

Many highly eusocial insects are characterized by morphological differences between females, which are especially pronounced in ants. How these differences associate with particular behavioral and physiological phenotypes can illuminate early ant evolution. In ants, the morphological queen usually possesses a larger thorax with wings compared with a wingless worker. While queens specialize in reproduction, workers help with non-reproductive tasks and show various levels of reproductive degeneration. Here, we investigated the level of behavioral and physiological plasticity within queens in the…

BACKGROUND: Many ant species can harm humans; however, only a few cause life-threatening allergic reactions. Normally, reactions caused by ants occur in patients who come into contact with ant venom. Venom contains various biologically active peptides and protein components, of which acids and alkaloids tend to cause anaphylaxis. Ant venom can cause both immediate and delayed reactions. The main histopathological changes observed in ant hypersensitivity are eosinophil recruitment and Th2 cytokine production.
CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old man was bitten by a large number of ants when he was in a…

The genus Odontomachus is widely distributed in neotropical areas throughout Central and South America. It is a stinging ant that subdues its prey (insects) by injecting them a cocktail of toxic molecules (venom). Ant venoms are generally composed of formic acid, alkaloids, hydrocarbons, amines, peptides, and proteins. Odontomachus chelifer is an ant that inhabits neotropical regions from Mexico to Argentina. Unlike the venom of other animals such as scorpions, spiders and snakes, this ant venom has seldom been analyzed comprehensively, and their compositions are not yet completely known. In t

PURPOSE: Abnormal neurogenesis in the hippocampus after status epilepticus (SE) has been suggested as a key pathogeny of temporal lobe epilepsy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of deep brain stimulation of the anterior thalamic nucleus (ANT-DBS) on hippocampal neurogenesis in LiCl-pilocarpine-induced epileptic rats and to analyze its relationship with postoperative spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) and anxiety.
METHOD: SE was induced by a systemic LiCl-pilocarpine injection in adult male rats. Rats in the DBS group underwent ANT-DBS immediately after successful SE induction. SRS

Spectinomycin is a ribosome-binding antibiotic that blocks the translocation step of translation. A prevalent resistance mechanism is modification of the drug by aminoglycoside nucleotidyl transferase (ANT) enzymes of the spectinomycin-specific ANT(9) family or by enzymes of the dual-specificity ANT(3")(9) family, which also acts on streptomycin. We previously reported the structural mechanism of streptomycin modification by the ANT(3")(9) AadA from Salmonella enterica ANT(9) from Enterococcus faecalis adenylates the 9-hydroxyl of spectinomycin. Here, we present the first structures of spectin

INTRODUCTION: Sea-level rise is a consequence of climate change that can impact the ecological and physiological changes of coastal, ground-dwelling species. Sea-level rise has a potential to inundate birds, rodents, spiders, and insects that live on the ground in coastal areas. Yet, there is still much to be learned concerning the specifics of these impacts. The red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta (Buren) excavates soil for its home and is capable of surviving flooding. Because of their ground-dwelling life history and rapid reproduction, fire ants make an ideal model for discovery and p…

Parasite infection often results in alterations in host behaviour. These changes vary greatly in their magnitude, from slight shifts in the time spent by the host performing a given activity to the appearance of novel behaviours. The effects of parasites can differ with the age and the physiological condition of the host. Rickia wasmannii is an ectoparasitic fungal symbiont in Myrmica ants that covers the whole body surface of the host and reduces its lifespan. The fungus is present in both young and old individuals, making it an optimal subject for the study of age-related parasitic effects. …

Hymenoptera venoms constitute an interesting source of natural toxins that may lead to the development of novel therapeutic agents. The present study investigated the enzymatic and biological characteristics of the crude venom of the ant Odontomachus bauri. Its crude venom presents several protein bands, with higher staining for six proteins with gelatinolytic activity (17, 20, 26, 29, 43 and 48 kDa). The crude venom showed high proteolytic activity on azocasein at optimal pH 8.0 and 37 °C. In the presence of protease inhibitors as aprotinin, leupeptin and EDTA, the azocaseinolytic activity wa
