Headache symptoms consistent with migraine and tension-type headaches in children with anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence of headache symptoms consistent with migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) in children with anxiety disorders. METHOD: Parents of children with anxiety disorders (n=27) and children without anxiety disorders (n=36) completed a headache questionnaire based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders (2nd edition) criteria. RESULTS: Children with anxiety disorders had a higher incidence of headache symptoms consistent with migraine and TTH compared to children without anxiety disorders. Girls with anxiety disorders and children with separati

Effects of early life trauma are dependent on genetic predisposition: a rat study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma experienced early in life increases the risk of developing a number of psychological and/or behavioural disorders. It is unclear, however, how genetic predisposition to a behavioural disorder, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), modifies the long-term effects of early life trauma. There is substantial evidence from family and twin studies for susceptibility to ADHD being inherited, implying a strong genetic component to the disorder. In the present study we used an inbred animal model of ADHD, the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), to investigate the

Linking attention bias to youth social anxiety and depression: Insights from computational modeling of the affective Posner task.

In youth, anxiety and depression symptomatology are linked to an attention bias toward threat-related stimuli. The affective Posner task was designed to assess attention bias to threat; however, research on its effectiveness in predicting anxiety and depressive symptoms in youth is limited. Here, we applied a drift diffusion model to affective Posner performance to evaluate whether this more fine-graianed approach reveals relations between individual differences in attention bias to threat and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Ninety-one adolescents 9-14 (Mage = 11.80, SD = 1.45; 45 males) y

Emotional and Behavioral Problems of Left-Behind Children in Impoverished Rural China: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study of Fourth-Grade Children.

PURPOSE: Children who are left behind when their parents migrate for work have a high prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems, which affect social function and increase family burden. To date, no national survey has been conducted on the emotional and behavioral problems of left-behind children (LBC) in China. This study aimed to investigate the emotional and behavioral outcomes of primary school LBC in the fourth grade in impoverished rural China and the possible influences of family environment and parenting practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 27 rural cou

Depression, anxiety symptoms, and association with household characteristics in adolescent boys and girls from Matiari District, Pakistan: A community-based cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Pakistan has one of the world's largest adolescent populations, yet evidence on the prevalence and correlates of depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents remains limited, particularly in rural settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms and examine their associations with household characteristics in a community-based sample of adolescents from the predominantly rural district of Matiari, Pakistan. METHODS: We examined cross-sectional data from 718 girls (9.0-14.9 years) and 678 boys (10.0-15.9 years) participating i

Comparison of intranasal dexmedetomidine-midazolam, dexmedetomidine-ketamine, and midazolam-ketamine for premedication in paediatric patients: a double-blinded randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric patients are a population with a high level of anxiety. The prevention of perioperative stress in a frightened child is important to render the child calm and cooperative for smoother induction. Intranasal premedication is easy and safe, and the drug is rapidly absorbed into the systemic circulation, ensuring early onset of sedation in children and good effectiveness. METHODS: 150 patients in the age group 2-4 years, ASA class I, undergoing elective surgical procedures were enrolled. The patients were randomly divided into 3 groups: a DM group (receiving intranasal dexm

The relationships between adverse events, early antecedents, and carbon dioxide reactivity as an intermediate phenotype of panic disorder: a general population study.

BACKGROUND: Although adverse events have been consistently described to precede and potentially precipitate the onset of panic disorder, there is no information about their ability to alter the individual reactivity to inhaled carbon dioxide, a putative intermediate phenotype of susceptibility to panic disorder. METHOD: Seven-hundred twelve subjects belonging to the general population-based Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel underwent a 35% CO(2)/65% O(2) inhalation challenge test and interview-based lifetime assessments of DSM-IV panic disorder, separation anxiety disorder, chil

Psychotherapies for comorbid anxiety in bipolar spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in bipolar disorder and have been shown to have serious negative impacts on the course of illness. The pharmacological treatment of anxiety can interact with the bipolar disorder and has not been proven effective. As such, many have recommended the psychological treatment of anxiety. This paper reviews the literature on psychological treatments for anxiety comorbid to bipolar disorder. METHOD: The Medline, PsychInfo and Web of Science databases were thoroughly examined for relevant treatment studies. RESULTS: Despite frequent recomm

Changes in emotion regulation following cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxious youth.

This study examined emotion-related functioning following cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with 37 youth with anxiety disorders (22 boys, 15 girls) ranging in age from 7 to 15 with a principal diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (n = 27), separation anxiety disorder (n = 12), and/or social phobia (n = 13). Treated youth exhibited a reduction in anxiety and increased anxiety self-efficacy and emotional awareness at posttreatment. Treated youth also demonstrated improved coping and less emotional dysregulation with worry but not with anger or sadness. The results suggest that the gains m

The Role of the Oxytocin System in Anxiety Disorders.

Oxytocin, a neuropeptide synthesized by the hypothalamus, plays a central role in human social behavior, social cognition, anxiety, mood, stress modulation, and fear learning and extinction. The relationships between oxytocin and psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorder have been extensively studied. In this chapter, we focus on the current knowledge about oxytocin and anxiety disorder. We discuss the anxiolytic effects of oxytocin in preclinical and clinical findings, possible related neurobehavioral mechanisms (social cognition, fear le

Diverse Profiles of Anxiety Related Disorders in Fragile X, Cornelia de Lange and Rubinstein-Taybi Syndromes.

Anxiety disorders are heightened in specific genetic syndromes in comparison to intellectual disability of heterogeneous aetiology. In this study, we described and contrasted anxiety symptomatology in fragile X (FXS), Cornelia de Lange (CdLS) and Rubinstein-Taybi syndromes (RTS), and compared the symptomatology to normative data for typically-developing children and children diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Scores did not differ between children diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and (a) participants with FXS on social phobia, panic/agoraphobia, physical injury fears, and obsessive-compulsi

[New proposals for the development of the concepts of neurotic anxiety, major depression and panic attack].

An accumulation of research results, laboratory and clinic, leads to revise the classification of disorders of anxious nature (anxiety disorders according to the DSM-III). An empirical confirmation allows to separate anxious states from panic attack and phobic behavior constituting a component separated from generalized anxiety, exaggerated emotional reactions to stress agents and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The response to pharmacotherapeutic agents and the important number of anxiety depression and mixed depression tends to make permeable the separating line between the nosological entit

[School truancy. A heterogeneous disturbing picture].

School truancy is not a diagnostic entity. It is rather a conglomeration of symptoms with various causal factors. With a prevalence of about 5% of all children attending school, three typical groups of anxious school truants can be differentiated: children with separation anxiety, with simple and social phobia as well as anxious and/or depressive symptoms. Anxious truants show depressive symptoms and separation anxiety significantly above chance, while school truancy is closely associated with social disorders, depression and oppositional behaviour and mostly occurs in boys. Psychosocial risk

Associations between dispositions to rash action and internalizing and externalizing symptoms in children.

Impulsivity is not a unitary construct; instead, dispositions to rash action can be divided into five moderately-correlated dimensions. However, the associations between these dimensions and symptoms of psychopathology among youth remain unclear. The goal of this study was to examine associations between different dispositions to rash action and psychopathology in a community sample of middle school youth. One hundred forty-four youth (M age = 11.9; 65% Hispanic, 30% African American; 50% male; 81% qualifying for free school lunches) participated in this study. Self-reported questionnaire meas

The Relationship Between Impulsivity, Anxiety and Internet Addiction in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Moderated Mediation Model.

We aimed to examine the relationship between impulsivity and Internet Addiction (IA) evaluating autism symptoms, inattention, hyperactivity, loneliness, anxiety, and depression in adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). We also investigated whether symptoms of autism, anxiety or depression moderate and/or mediate the relationship between impulsivity and study variables in predicting the severity of IA. Participants (n = 46 adolescents with ASD, ages 12-18) were assessed through Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ), Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scales, Turgay DSM-IV-

Twelve-month and lifetime prevalence and lifetime morbid risk of anxiety and mood disorders in the United States.

Estimates of 12-month and lifetime prevalence and of lifetime morbid risk (LMR) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) anxiety and mood disorders are presented based on US epidemiological surveys among people aged 13+. The presentation is designed for use in the upcoming DSM-5 manual to provide more coherent estimates than would otherwise be available. Prevalence estimates are presented for the age groups proposed by DSM-5 workgroups as the most useful to consider for policy planning purposes. The LMR/12-month prevalence estimate

Effect of environmental exposure to a maternally-learned odorant on anxiety-like behaviors at weaning in mice.

Early sensory experience, such as exposure to maternal or other environmental factors, is considered to influence neurocognitive development and behaviors. In many species, exposure to odorants during pregnancy or lactation impacts the morpho-functional development of the olfactory circuitry with changes in olfactory sensitivity, feeding behavior and food preferences at birth or later. However, few studies have investigated the impact of a perinatal exposure to odorants on the anxiety-like behavior of animals to stressfull stimuli. Here, we exposed mice to heptaldehyde (HEP) during pregnancy a
