OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the outcomes of tongue-tie division procedures in patients with ankyloglossia with the goal of (1) deriving clinically oriented insights into the effect of tongue-tie division procedures and (2) identifying needs in knowledge to stimulate further research.
DATA SOURCES: Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched without any limitations, for studies published between 1966 and June 2012.
REVIEW METHODS: Studies were included (level 4 evidence or above) if subjects of any age had ankyloglossia and underwent tongue-tie release. Outcome measures of i

The use of tools and other objects in articulation therapy has been bundled into new groups of activities called "nonspeech oral motor exercises" (NSOME) and 'nonspeech oral motor treatments' (NSOMT) by some authors. The purveyors of these new terms suggest that there is no proof that such objects aid speech learning, and they have cautioned students and professionals about their use. Speech-language pathologists are trying to reconcile these cautions with basic Van Riper type therapy routines. The purpose of this literature review was to summarize the ways in which tools/objects were used by

BACKGROUND: Generalization based on implicational relations.
AIM: To analyze generalization based on implicational relations in subjects with mild-moderate phonological disorder, who underwent therapy based on the Maximal Oppositions Model.
METHOD: The initial phonological system of four subjects was analyzed, taking in consideration sounds that were not completely acquired and their changes in probes. A final phonological assessment was made.
RESULTS: All subjects presented generalizations based on implicational relations and expanded their phonological systems.
CONCLUSION: The Maximal Op

Dyslexia is widely considered to be associated with impaired performance on phonological awareness tasks. However, it is likely that orthographic knowledge also influences performance on these tasks. In this study, adult dyslexics, for whom reading is no longer a major problem, were compared to a control group on a measure of articulatory awareness, a task which is not confounded with orthography. The dyslexic group showed deficits on the task in comparison to the control group. We hypothesize that information about articulatory movements for specific phonemes is less accessible to dyslexics b

Magnetic resonance imaging was used to analyze functional positions of the tongue and soft palate in 10 patients and 10 healthy volunteers. The patients had velopharyngeal insufficiency and/or dysfunction of the tongue. With snapshot FLASH (fast low-angle shot) sequences (data acquisition time, less than 1 second), malpositions of the articulatory apparatus were imaged and recorded for follow-up documentation.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for oral or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (O&OSCC) often leads to problems with speech articulation. Articulatory-kinematic data may be especially informative in designing new therapeutic approaches for individuals treated for these tumours.
AIMS: To provide a systematic review of the literature assessing the articulatory-kinematic consequences of oral and oropharyngeal cancer treatment.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and PsycInfo) were used to identify studies that used kinematic methods to characterize the speech o

PURPOSE: To explore an alternative approach to evaluate velopharyngeal function on those speakers with compensatory misarticulation.
METHOD: Nasopharyngeal endoscopy was used to observe the velopharyngeal movement on 26 adult Mandarin speakers during articulation and different nonverbal state, including SCPS, DCPS, and ABS.
RESULTS: There were significant differences for the rate of velopharyngeal incompetence (RVPI) among the 4 different states. The RVPI was least for the Articulation State, followed by the Air Blowing and DCPS. The RVPI was largest for the SCPS.
CONCLUSION: The result ind

Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) is an intriguing motor speech disorder which has captured the interest of the scientific community and media for decades. At the moment, there is no comprehensive model which can account for the pathophysiology of this disorder. This paper presents a review of 112 FAS cases published between 1907 and October 2016: these were analyzed with respect to demographic characteristics, lesion location, associated neurocognitive symptoms, and comorbid speech and language disorders. The analysis revealed that organic-neurogenic FAS is more frequent in women than in men. In

We examine the distinction between "consonantal-r" and "vocalic-r" in American English, terms encountered in the speech pathology literature but rarely in phonetic studies. We review evidence from phonetics, phonology and therapy, and describe our own study which measured percentage rhoticity in pre- and post-vocalic /r/. We suggest that the evidence supports a view that there is no more variation between pre-vocalic and post-vocalic /r/ than found in many other consonants. We also evaluate the different transcription traditions for post-vocalic /r/ in American English (as a consonant or a vow

The ability to identify stop consonants from brief onset spectra was compared between a group of Chinese children with phonological dyslexia (the PD group, with a mean age of 10 years 4 months) and a group of chronological age-matched control children. The linguistic context, which included vowels and speakers, and durations of stop onset spectra were varied. Children with PD showed lower identification accuracy and exhibited a smaller vowel context effect for some stop-vowel combinations compared with the chronological age-matched control group. Further analyses revealed that the PD group had

Although the role of IQ in developmental dyslexia remains ambiguous, the dominant clinical and research approaches rely on a definition of dyslexia that requires reading skill to be significantly below the level expected given an individual's IQ. In the study reported here, we used functional MRI (fMRI) to examine whether differences in brain activation during phonological processing that are characteristic of dyslexia were similar or dissimilar in children with poor reading ability who had high IQ scores (discrepant readers) and in children with poor reading ability who had low IQ scores (non

This article presents a case study of speech production in a 14-year-old Amharic-speaking boy. The boy had developed secondary macroglossia, related to a disturbance of growth hormones, following a history of normal speech development. Perceptual analysis combined with acoustic analysis and static palatography is used to investigate the specific articulatory compensations arising from the macroglossia. The subset of sounds chosen for study were the denti-alveolar and alveolar plosives, fricatives, ejectives, nasal, lateral and trill produced in single words, as well as in short phrases. The ph

Anatomical restraining of tongue movement (tongue-tie, ankyloglossia) has been known for centuries and the subject of dozens of articles. The heated debate persists on its clinical significance and indications for treatment. Most authorities in the field of infant feeding and Lactation agree that breastfeeding problems, such as nipple pain and latching difficulties, are common signs of clinicaLly significant tongue-tie and indications for performing a frenotomy, while the sole presence of a visible lingual frenulum is not. In contrast, the lack of a visible frenulum does not rule out the diagn

BACKGROUND: School-aged children with persisting speech sound disorders (SSDs) may show little improvement in speech accuracy following phonological or articulation therapy.
AIMS: To determine the effects of establishing consonant production in facilitative vowel contexts for a 7-year-old boy (CD) with persisting post-alveolar fronting. CD had received phonological awareness therapy and traditional articulation therapy as part of a community caseload. However, his post-alveolar fronting showed resistance to therapy.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: CD received individual therapy for nine 45-55-min sess

The aim of this study is to present a survey of speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders (PD). We will examine the concepts of normal phonological development and those involved in PD in order to understand how they have been dealt with, historically, in speech therapy intervention. Lastly, we will describe how evaluation and intervention are carried out from the speech processing paradigm. Phonetic phonological skills allow people to decode the phonic strings they hear so as to be able to gain access to their phonological form and meaning. These abilities also enable them to enco

The focus of this paper is on interaction between clients and clinicians during language intervention. Two kinds of phonological interventions are compared, viz. Metaphon therapy and traditional therapy. Elicitation strategies used by the clinicians and the effects on child participation are analysed. The results show that the elicitation strategies used in Metaphon significantly more often required a comprehension response, elicited by an indirect rather than a direct request. The elicitations in traditional therapy significantly more often required direct productions from the child. Both kin

Phonological dyslexics (Ph-DYS) are characterized by a phonological deficit, while surface dyslexics (S-DYS) are characterized by an orthographic deficit. Four issues were addressed in this study. First, we determined the proportion of Ph-DYS and S-DYS in a population of French dyslexics by applying Castles and Coltheart's (1993) regression method to two previously unused diagnostic measures: pseudo-word and irregular-word processing time. Thirty-one dyslexics were matched to 19 average readers of the same age (10 years, CA controls) and to 19 younger children of the same reading level (8 year

The case of a 30-year-old man with aglossia is reported. Aglossia, a rare condition, is a developmental disorder in which the entire tongue is absent. It is usually associated with jaw and facial anomalies. In this patient, both the maxilla and mandible were affected. Although the mortality rate of patients with aglossia is high, this patient has been able to cope with his oral function with minimal obstruction.

This review summarizes and discusses the literature on speech deficits in cerebellar diseases and on the topography of cerebellar dysarthria. Clinical descriptions of dysarthric features in cerebellar diseases, parametric investigations of ataxic dysarthria, and experimental studies in animals concerning the effects of lesions on vocalization and the representation of sensorimotor orofacial functions in the cerebellum are considered. Signs of cerebellar dysarthria include a slowing down of articulatory movements, increased variability of pitch and loudness, monotonous and "scanning" speech, an
