The objective of the paper was to show the effect of supplementation of biotin (vitamin H) on vitamin C synthesis in chickens. A significant vitamin C increase was observed in kidneys, adrenal glands, liver, glandular stomach, jejunum wall, caecum wall and in blood plasma. A clear increase in the level of D-glucuronic acid was observed in adrenal glands, jejunum wall, and caecum wall. The activity of L-gulono-gamma-oxidase enzyme clearly increased in adrenal glands, jejunum wall and in stomach. Determinations of various catecholamines and their metabolites have been performed on 24-hr urine collecions obtained from a patient with torsion dystonia and compared to values obtained in a control population. Female guinea pigs were fed a scorbutigenic diet supplemented with either L-ascorbic acid or D-isoascorbic acid or combinations of these. Their responses were judged by changes in body weight, serum alkaline phosphatase levels, wound healing, and tooth structure. Eight male Cynomolgus monkeys were fed an ascorbic acid-free total liquid diet until plasma levels decreased from a mean of 1.1 mg/dl to 0.04 mg/dl at 8 weeks. They showed no visible signs of scurvy. The animals were then given a daily oral dose of 10 mg ascorbic acid/kg body weight for 4 weeks, when the experiment was ended. The effect of ascorbic acid deficiency on bone metabolism was evaluated using the ascorbate-requiring Osteogenic Disorder Shionogi (ODS) rat model. Ascorbic acid (Asc)-deficient rats gained body weight in a manner similar to Asc-supplemented rats (control) during 3 weeks, but began to lose weight during the 4th week of Asc deficiency.
