Serotonergic modulation of cortical gamma synchronization: right-lateralized psilocin effects on 40 Hz auditory steady-state responses in rats.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), particularly at 40 Hz, are promising biomarkers for psychiatric disorders involving dysregulated neural synchronization. Although most ASSR studies have focused on the glutamatergic system, the serotonergic system, specifically 5-HT2A receptor signaling, has received limited attention. Psilocin, the active metabolite of psilocybin and a known 5-HT2A receptor agonist, alters cortical oscillatory activity, but its effects on ASSR dynamics remain unclear. In this study, we examined psilocin's effects on ASSRs in eight adult male Wistar rats implanted with

Central auditory processing and cognitive abilities after mild traumatic brain injury in school-aged children.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to explore (1) school-aged children's auditory and cognitive abilities and (2) their perceptions (self-reported and parents) of listening behaviours and symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-one children aged 8 to 12 participated in this study. Eleven children with mTBI were diagnosed in the emergency department, and 10 were matched controls. They were assessed twice, in the acute (≤14 days) and chronic (≥3 months) stages post-injury, using six central auditory behavioural tests, a cogn

[Low level auditory skills in school children attending third and fourth grade].

BACKGROUND: In Germany testing auditory low level skills has gained some popularity. However only few studies have provided norms. Prior to further testing we here aimed at establishing normal values for school children. DESIGN: prospective study. SAMPLE: School children attending 3rd and 4th grade. DEPENDENT VARIABLES: just noticeable differences for intensity and frequency (JNDI, JNDF), gap detection (GD) monaural and binaural temporal order judgement (TOJB and TOJM). STATISTICS: descriptive and correlational analysis. RESULTS: Data did not follow a normal distribution, i. e. only few c

Auditory Localization and Spatial Release From Masking in Children With Suspected Auditory Processing Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate whether children referred to our audiology clinic with a complaint of listening difficulty, that is, suspected of auditory processing disorder (APD), have difficulties localizing sounds in noise and whether they have reduced benefit from spatial release from masking. DESIGN: Forty-seven typically hearing children in the age range of 7 to 17 years took part in the study. Twenty-one typically developing (TD) children served as controls, and the other 26 children, referred to our audiology clinic with listening problems, were the study group: suspected APD (s

[Factors predicting Voice Handicap Index].

OBJECTIVE: To assess factors that may be predictive of patient perception of dysphonia severity, as quantified by the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) score. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study is carried out in 81 voice samples from patients diagnosed with benign vocal fold lesions. Variables assessed for predictive value to VHI score are maximum fonation time, narrow band spectrogram, jitter, shimmer, HNR, NNE, F0 and the auditory perceptual evaluation of severity of dysphonia GRABS. RESULTS: HNR, F0 and B and S parameters of GRABS were predictors of total VHI score, functional and emotion

Evolving concepts of developmental auditory processing disorder (APD): a British Society of Audiology APD special interest group 'white paper'.

Children with listening difficulties, but normal audiometry, may be diagnosed with APD. The diagnosis is typically based on poor performance on tests of perception of both non-speech and speech stimuli. However, non-speech test results correlate only weakly with evaluations of speech-in-noise processing, cognitive skills, and caregiver evaluations of listening ability. The interpretation of speech test results is confounded by the involvement of language processing mechanisms. Overall, listening ability is associated more with higher-level, cognitive and analytic processing than with lower-lev

The Effect of Age and History of Recurrent Otitis Media on Dichotic Listening and Verbal Memory in Children.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the possible effects of recurrent otitis media (ROM) in early childhood on binaural processing and verbal memory in school-aged children. METHODS: Two hundred eleven children, including 31 children with and 180 children without a history of ROM, were examined. A dichotic digit test (DDT) and a forward and backward digit memory span test (DMST) were administered. RESULTS: A significant difference was observed between age groups among ROM-free children. The ROM-positive group earned significantly poorer results than the ROM-free group in all measurements, except for the

Disrupted sensorimotor synchronization, but intact rhythm discrimination, in children treated for a cerebellar medulloblastoma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal abilities of children treated by surgery for a malignant tumor in the cerebellum, both in the perception and the production of rhythm. Children with a diagnosed medulloblastoma and age-matched control children were tested in a rhythm discrimination task and a sensorimotor synchronization task. Their motor and cognitive capabilities were also assessed through a battery of age-adapted neuropsychological tests. The results did not show any significant difference in performance between groups for the discrimination task. On the contrary, childr

[Low level auditory skills compared to writing skills in school children attending third and fourth grade: evidence for the rapid auditory processing deficit theory?].

BACKGROUND: The rapid auditory processing defi-cit theory holds that impaired reading/writing skills are not caused exclusively by a cognitive deficit specific to representation and processing of speech sounds but arise due to sensory, mainly auditory, deficits. To further explore this theory we compared different measures of auditory low level skills to writing skills in school children. DESIGN: prospective study. SAMPLE: School children attending third and fourth grade. DEPENDENT VARIABLES: just noticeable differences for intensity and frequency (JNDI, JNDF), gap detection (GD) monaural a

Dichotic listening during auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory hallucinations are a serious problem for a large subgroup of psychotic patients who do not respond optimally to neuroleptic medication. It has been hypothesized that hearing imaginary voices involves the same physiological processes as those involved in hearing real voices, but this hypothesis has not been conclusively confirmed. METHOD: In this study a consonant-vowel version of the Dichotic Listening Test was used to assess the functional integration of the left hemisphere in hallucinating and nonhallucinating psychotic patients. The test was administered under three con

Temporal auditory and visual motion processing of children diagnosed with auditory processing disorder and dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory processing disorder (APD) is diagnosed on the basis of listening difficulties despite normal audiogram, although the cause is unknown. This study examined the hypothesis that the underlying cause of APD is a modality-specific deficit in auditory temporal processing and also considered how far the auditory impairments in APD differ from those in children with dyslexia. DESIGN: Performance of children diagnosed with APD (N = 22) was compared with that of a normative group (N = 98) as well as with children with dyslexia (N = 19) on a battery of temporal auditory tasks; 2-Hz f

Perceptual Evaluation of Voice and Parental Reports of Vocal Behaviors in Primary School Children in Chennai, India: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: The human voice plays a pivotal role in communication, influencing social interactions and overall development. Voice disorders among children, ranging from 6% to 9%, can hinder communication, academic, and social performance. Despite the prevalence, limited research examines parental observations alongside professional evaluations. This study bridges this gap, integrating parental perspectives with speech-language pathologist (SLP) assessments to provide a comprehensive understanding of children's vocal health. AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to invest

Evaluation of speech disorders in children with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the reliability of nasopharyngoscopy and auditory perception, two common clinical methods employed in examining the speech pathology of children with cleft lip and palate. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nasopharyngoscopy was performed to assess velopharyngeal closure function and nasopharyngeal morphology. The auditory examination evaluated nasality and other speech disorders such as articulatory tension, shift in articulation, and sigmatism. The study was based on the audio and video recordings of twelve patients (9.5 +/- 0.5 years) after surgical rehabilitation of their c

Interaural asymmetries revealed by dichotic listening tests in normal and dyslexic children.

Normal and dyslexic right-handed children were assessed with three dichotic listening tests, the Dichotic Digits test, the Competing Words subtest of the SCAN, and the Dichotic Consonant-Vowel test. Performance was measured as both number and percentage of correct responses in the right and left ears. Laterality was defined as a simple difference in percentage between the two ears. Differences across the tests were revealed for all children, with the greatest differences occurring for left-ear responses. Only one dichotic listening test, Competing Words from the SCAN, produced a consistent rig

Abnormal monitoring of inner speech: a physiological basis for auditory hallucinations.

Auditory verbal hallucinations ("voices") are thought to arise from a disorder of inner speech (thinking in words). We examined the neural correlates of tasks which involve inner speech in subjects with schizophrenia who hear voices (hallucinators), subjects with schizophrenia who do not (nonhallucinators), and normal controls. There were no differences between hallucinators and controls in regional cerebral blood flow during thinking in sentences. However, when imagining sentences being spoken in another person's voice--which entails both the generation and monitoring of inner speech--halluci
