Autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine changes in patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

To investigate sympathetic nervous system and neuroendocrine changes in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, we determined the plasma level of the catecholamines norepinephrine and epinephrine, as well as cortisol and ACTH in 16 patients (55.3 +/- 8.3 years) with trigeminal neuralgia at four different times during the day (7.00, 13.00, 17.00 and 23.00). Morning and evening values of plasma norepinephrine as well as the daily mean value (dmv) were significantly higher (p < 0.01) in patients with trigeminal neuralgia than in an age- and gender-matched control group. Moreover, morning, afternoon and

Trypanosoma cruzi strains and autonomic nervous system pathology in experimental Chagas disease.

Lesions involving the sympathetic (para-vertebral ganglia) and para-sympathetic ganglia of intestines (Auerbach plexus) and heart (right atrial ganglia) were comparatively analyzed in mice infected with either of three different strain types of Trypanosoma cruzi, during acute and chronic infection, in an attempt to understand the influence of parasite strain in causing autonomic nervous system pathology. Ganglionar involvement with neuronal destruction appeared related to inflammation, which most of the times extended from neighboring adipose and cardiac, smooth and striated muscular tissues. …

[Autonomic nervous system disturbance as a possible cause of vertigo or dizziness].

In the present study possible interactions between dizziness, or vertigo, and eventual malfunctioning of the Autonomic Nervous System were evaluated. Two groups of ten patients each were patients each were tested. All the patients had vertigo or dizziness of uncertain etiology and ten had arterious hypotension. A careful anamnestic research was carried out in order to individualize symptoms or elements which could induce dysautonomia. A series of 6 tests aimed at evaluating cardiovascular responses was performed in all the patients. Alterations were present in 65% of the test responses. In par…

[Tuberous sclerosis. Early diagnosis with autonomic nervous system responses in hypopigmented skin].

The earliest clinical sign for the diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis (TS) is the presence of cutaneous hypopigmented macules. However, there are no clinical, histopathological or functional criteria to discriminate between hipopigmented macules of TS and those without associated pathology. In this prospective study, the responses of the autonomous nervous system, erythema and sweating induced through iontophoresis with pilocarpine, were studied in three groups of patients (20 with TS, 10 with hipomelanosis of Ito, and 10 with hipopigmented macules without associated pathology). In hipopigmented

Botulinum toxin therapy: distant effects on neuromuscular transmission and autonomic nervous system.

To evaluate distant effects of botulinum toxin, single fibre electromyography on the extensor digitorum communis muscle and six tests of cardiovascular reflexes were performed in five patients injected with BoTox (Oculinum(R) 20-130 units) for craniocervical dystonia and hemifacial spasm. Patients underwent two sessions of treatment and the second time the dosage was doubled. Botulinum toxin injection induced an increase of mean jitter value above normal limits in all cases. An increase of fibre density was recorded six weeks after the treatment. Cardiovascular reflexes showed mild abnormaliti

Autonomic nervous system function in patients with primary obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

Ten patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome cured by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty were compared to nine patients considered as surgical failures, using cardiovascular reflex tests--Valsalva manoeuvre, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, isometric handgrip and head-up tilt. Two patients had signs of moderate vagal dysfunction, but no case of definite autonomic nervous dysfunction was diagnosed. The overall results indicated sympathetic overreactivity, positively correlated to oxygen desaturation indices and remaining after successful treatment. Four patients did not exhibit bradycardia during sl

Autonomic nervous system differences as predictors of short-term outcome in schizophrenics.

Skin conductance and heart rate of 19 drug-free acute schizophrenic patients were measured before neuroleptic therapy was started. The patients were divided into two groups according to therapeutic outcome. The Discriminant Analysis revealed a difference in the ANS activity pattern between the group with low improvement and the group with a more favorable outcome. The low improvement group showed a paradoxical ANS reactivity pattern: relatively lower activity in skin conductance level under demand (attention task) and relatively higher activity, as reflected by the cardiovascular response to n

Disorders of the autonomic nervous system: Part 1. Pathophysiology and clinical features.

Autonomic dysfunction may result from diseases that affect primarily either the central nervous system or the peripheral autonomic nervous system. The most common pathogenesis of disturbed autonomic function in central nervous system diseases is degeneration of the intermediolateral cell columns (progressive autonomic failure) or disease or damage to descending pathways that synapse on the intermediolateral column cells (spinal cord lesions, cerebrovascular disease, brainstem tumors, multiple sclerosis). The peripheral autonomic nervous system may be damaged in isolation in the acute and subac…

Diurnal variation of the QT interval--influence of the autonomic nervous system.

To assess the influence of diurnal changes in the autonomic nervous system on the QT interval, 24 hour dynamic electrocardiographic monitoring was performed in six pacemaker dependent patients with normally innervated hearts, in six cardiac transplant patients with anatomically denervated hearts (but which respond to circulating catecholamines), and in nine diabetic patients with confirmed autonomic neuropathy. QT and RR intervals from hourly intervals were measured and Bazett's formula was used to correct QT intervals during sinus rhythm. All QT intervals were normalised by dividing by the me…

Retroperitoneal paraganglia and the peripheral autonomic nervous system in the human fetus.

By means of the AChE in toto staining method retroperitoneal paraganglia and the peripheral autonomic nervous system in human fetuses have been investigated. Many small retroperitoneal paraganglia are present near the sympathetic trunks close to the sympathetic trunk ganglia. In the thoracic region small paraganglia are present in the intercostal spaces. Small splanchnic nerves entering small paraganglia have been described. In the lower sacral region no paraganglia are present. The major splanchnic nerve arises at various levels from the sympathetic trunks as well as many smaller thoracic spl…

Prions spread via the autonomic nervous system from the gut to the central nervous system in cattle incubating bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

To elucidate the still-unknown pathogenesis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), an oral BSE challenge and sequential kill study was carried out on 56 calves. Relevant tissues belonging to the peripheral and central nervous system, as well as to the lymphoreticular tract, from necropsied animals were analysed by highly sensitive immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting techniques to reveal the presence of BSE-associated pathological prion protein (PrPSc) depositions. Our results demonstrate two routes involving the autonomic nervous system through which BSE prions spread by anterograde pa…

The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Epilepsy and Migraine: A Narrative Review.

Autonomic symptoms may be local and general clinical manifestations of both epilepsy and migraine caused by the dysfunction of brain areas best known as the central autonomic network. Despite their prevalence, autonomic signs are often misdiagnosed and their treatment is undervalued. This review aims to describe the autonomic manifestations reported during seizures and migraineur attacks according to their presentation, focusing on the role of the central autonomic network (CAN) and on the parasympathetic outflow that often-induced cranial autonomic symptoms (CAS) during migraineur attacks.
