It was found that 96.2 per cent of the plague microbe cultures studied had a capacity to produce pesticin I on solid and liquid minimum synthetic nutrient media providing growth of the cultures. No pesticin III was detected in the spheroplasts of plague microbes, when they were grown on the synthetic nutrient medium, while on the complete nutrient medium the inhibition zones were observed which was indicative of pesticin III synthesis. The average value characterizing the titer of pesticin I produced by the rod-shaped forms of the plague microbe on the complete and synthetic nutrient media was

We report the draft genome sequence of the oral commensal Streptococcus oralis 89a isolated from the throat of a healthy child during a streptococcal tonsillitis outbreak in Umeå, Sweden. S. oralis 89a was known to have interference activity against respiratory pathogens in which the colicin V was the potential bacteriocin-encoding gene.

The aims of this study were to characterize inhibitory activity spectra, some probiotic properties and safety of Lactobacillus curvatus A61 for its future application in production of fermented foods. The studied strain was isolated from traditional homemade cheese manufactured in Azerbaijan. The cell-free supernatant of culture of Lb. curvatus A61 inhibited the growth of tested LAB, as well as of Listeria monocytogenes and Bacillus cereus strains. The strain presented antifungal activity and inhibited the growth of Cladosporium and Fusarium ssp. during co-cultivation on agar media. PCR amplif

In the polymicrobial environment of the human nasopharynx, Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) competes with other members of the microbial community for limited nutrients in part by secreting small peptide bacteriocins called pneumocins. Pneumocin production is controlled by a quorum sensing system encoded by the blp locus. Although the locus is found in all pneumococci, there is significant variability in the repertoire of pneumocins and associated immunity proteins encoded in the Bacteriocin Immunity Region (BIR) and in the presence or absence of a functional Blp transporter. Strains wi…

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the global COVID-19 pandemic, relies on its spike glycoprotein to mediate host cell entry via binding to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2). The S2 subunit of the spike protein contains heptad repeat regions (HR1 and HR2) that form a six-helix bundle fusion core, a critical step for viral-host membrane fusion. This study aimed to computationally screen a library of 318 probiotic-derived bacteriocins to identify potential inhibitors targeting the conserved HR1 domain. Evaluation included historical v…

The morphology and electron-microscopic anatomy of Leptospirae, the lack of the presence of leptospiral phages (and probably of bacteriocins), and the absence of phagocytosis as a defence mechanism in leptospirosis, indicate the non-bacteriologie character of this genus. Leptospirae form an evolutionary intermediate bridge between the worlds of bacteria and protozoa. In "Bergey's Manual" they are assigned to the world of bacteria for practical reasons; but it seems to be reasonable to stress more largely the "bacteriological" and "protozoologic" markers of Leptospirae, in the subsequent 9th ed…

OBJECTIVES: Natural microbial defence systems, such as bacteriocins, may be a novel means to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infection. We investigated in vitro whether a colicin-expressing strain of Escherichia coli could prevent urinary catheter colonization by a colicin-susceptible, uropathgenic strain of E. coli.
METHODS: Segments of urinary catheter were inoculated with colicin-producing E. coli K-12 and then exposed to either colicin-susceptible E. coli (a uropathogenic clinical isolate) or colicin-resistant E. coli (derived from the susceptible clinical isolate). Catheters we…

The pathogen group A Streptococcus (GAS) produces a wide spectrum of infections including necrotizing fasciitis (NF). Streptolysin S (SLS) produces the hallmark beta-haemolytic phenotype produced by GAS. The nine-gene GAS locus (sagA-sagI) resembling a bacteriocin biosynthetic operon is necessary and sufficient for SLS production. Using precise, in-frame allelic exchange mutagenesis and single-gene complementation, we show sagA, sagB, sagC, sagD, sagE, sagF and sagG are each individually required for SLS production, and that sagE may further serve an immunity function. Staphylococcal phage group 2 strain UT0007 was previously shown to contain a high-molecular-weight plasmid containing genes for exfoliative toxin (ET) and bacteriocin production. Phage group 2 strains UT0002 and UT0003 (Tox+Bac-) underwent a twofold and ninefold loss of ET activity, respectively, after growth at 44 C for 18 h. Strain UT0002 also lost total bacteriocin activity. Both strains contained (i) a 56S plasmid that was lost from those substrains showing reduced ET activity and (ii) a 21S plasmid with a gene for cadmium resistance that could be transduced into two recipient strains. Smoked salmon is a highly appreciated delicatessen product. Nevertheless, this ready-to-eat (RTE) product is considered at risk for Listeria monocytogenes, due to both the prevalence and growth potential of this bacteria on the product. Biopreservation may be considered a mild and natural effective strategy for minimizing this risk. In this study, we evaluated the following three potential bioprotective lactic acid bacterial strains against L. monocytogenes in three smoked salmon types with different physicochemical characteristics, primarily fat, moisture, phenol and acid acetic content: two

AIMS: To determine whether dosing with bacteriocin-producing Streptococcus salivarius following an antimicrobial mouthwash effects a change in oral malodour parameters and in the composition of the oral microbiota of subjects with halitosis.
MATERIALS AND RESULTS: Twenty-three subjects with halitosis undertook a 3-day regimen of chlorhexidine (CHX) mouth rinsing, followed at intervals by the use of lozenges containing either S. salivarius K12 or placebo. Assessment of the subjects' volatile sulphur compound (VSC) levels 1 week after treatment initiation showed that 85% of the K12-treated grou

Thirty six Klebsiella pneumoniae strains were assayed in a test to determine bacterial interference; two of them had bacteriocinic effects on homologous species, strains 6 and 150 inhibited sensitive K. pneumoniae and they also acted on positive and negative Staphylococci coagulase. All cocci were sensitive to the bacteriocinogenic K. pneumoniae and none of the non-bacteriocinogenic strains inhibited them. Klebocin with homologous activity on K. pneumoniae seemed to be undistinguishable from the compound with heterologous action on Staphylococci in the aspects that were characterized in this w

Chronic, highly antibiotic-resistant infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) lungs contribute to increasing morbidity and mortality. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common CF pathogen, exhibits resistance to multiple antibiotics, contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). These bacterial populations display genetic and phenotypic diversity, but it is unclear how this diversity affects susceptibility to bacteriocins. R-pyocins, i.e. bacteriocins produced by P. aeruginosa, are phage tail-like antimicrobials. R-pyocins have potential as antimicrobials, however recent research suggests the diversity of …

Corynebacterium amycolatum ICIS 99 was isolated from vaginal smears of healthy women and showed promising results in antimicrobial screenings. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of this strain and analyze its main features to assess its safety and useful properties. The genome is 2,532,503 bp long and contains 2186 CDSs with an average G + C content of 59.0%. Analyses of the ICIS 99 genome revealed the absence of true virulence factors. The genome contains genes involved in the synthesis of secondary metabolites and bacteriocins of the class sactipeptide. In the genome of ICIS 99, we id…
