Bacteriologic features of chronic sinusitis in children.

Aspiration of chronically inflamed sinuses was aseptically performed in 40 children. The median age was 11 years (range, 6 to 16 years). The sinuses were the maxillary (15 cases), ethmoid (13), and frontal (seven). Pansinusitis was present in five patients. All aspirates were cultured for aerobes and anaerobes and yielded bacterial growth in 37 patients. A total of 121 isolates (97 anaerobic and 24 aerobic) were recovered, accounting for 2.7 anaerobes and 0.6 aerobes per specimen. Anaerobic organisms were recovered from all 37 culture-positive specimens, and in 14 cases (38%) they were mixed w

[Bacteriological examinations using the invagination catheter].

Quantitative and qualitative bacteriological studies have been performed on bladder urines taken by two different technics. Bladder urine was first obtained by suprapubic bladder aspiration. Immediately after the puncture another sample of bladder urine was obtained by the "invagination catheter" (only usable in women) transurethrally. In 80 consecutive parallel studies no differences were found in the bacterial counts, and only one difference were found in bacterial type. From the diagnostic point of view, therefore, the two methods were found to be equivalent. In another series of 52 patient

[Bacteriological diagnosis of Haemophilus pleuropneumonia in swine].

Haemophilus pleuropneumonia (Matthews and Pattison, 1961; Shope, 1964) should now be accepted as the valid name of the pathogen of hemophilus pleuropneumoniae of swine, according to studies and the description by Kilian and co-workers (1978), while the name of Haemophilus parahaemolyticus should be considered a synonym. On top of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae, Haemophilus parasuis and Haemophilus spec. "minor group" are also important to pneumonia, serositis, and arthritis (Glässer's disease) in swine, whereas Haemophilus suis is hardly any longer isolated. Evidence as to dependence on growth f

Bacteriological evaluation of fosfomycin in clinical studies.

Since fosfomycin has behaved in vitro as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, an attempt has been made to evaluate this behaviour in controlled clinical study carried out at different Spanish hospitals. A total of 959 patients were treated for some of the following infectious clinical processes: gonococcal urethritis, typhoid fever, enterocolitis, acute and chronic urinary tract infections, osteomyelitis, chronic otorrhoea, septicaemia, meningitis, peritonitis, surgical and suppurative infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, pharyngoamygdalitis, burns, endometritis, ocular infection, whooping cough and nas
