Differential effects of alliance and techniques on Panic-Specific Reflective Function and misinterpretation of bodily sensations in two treatments for panic.

ABSTRACTObjective: To examine whether working alliance quality and use of techniques predict improvement in Panic-Specific Reflection Function (PSRF), and misinterpretation of bodily sensations in treatments for panic disorder. Method: A sample of 161 patients received either CBT or PFPP (Panic-focused Psychodynamic therapy) within a larger RCT. Data were collected on patient-reported working alliance, misinterpretations, PSRF, observer-coded use of techniques, and interviewer-rated panic severity. Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models assessed bi-directional associations, disentangling w

Gut-brain nutrient sensing in food reward.

For the past several decades, vagal and hormonal gut-brain negative feedback signaling mechanisms that promote satiety and subsequent suppression of food intake have been explored. In addition, a separate positive feedback process termed "appetition," involving postoral signaling from the gut to the brain, has been shown to promote food intake and produce flavor-nutrient preference conditioning. Afferent fibers emerging from the vagus nerve form the main pathway by which information is relayed from the abdominal viscera to the hindbrain and eventually other higher brain regions involved in foo

Mapping the dynamics of brain perfusion using functional ultrasound in a rat model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion.

Following middle cerebral artery occlusion, tissue outcome ranges from normal to infarcted depending on depth and duration of hypoperfusion as well as occurrence and efficiency of reperfusion. However, the precise time course of these changes in relation to tissue and behavioral outcome remains unsettled. To address these issues, a three-dimensional wide field-of-view and real-time quantitative functional imaging technique able to map perfusion in the rodent brain would be desirable. Here, we applied functional ultrasound imaging, a novel approach to map relative cerebral blood volume without

Assessment of in vivo behavior of polymer tube nerve grafts simultaneously with the peripheral nerve regeneration process using scanning electron microscopy technique.

In this study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been applied for instantaneous assessment of processes occurring at the site of regenerating nerve. The technique proved to be especially useful when an artificial implant should have been observed but have not yet been extensively investigated before for assessment of nerve tissue. For in vivo studies, evaluation of implant's morphology and its neuroregenerative properties is of great importance when new prototype is developed. However, the usually applied histological techniques require separate and differently prepared samples, and there

The Role of Diffusion Tensor MR Imaging (DTI) of the Brain in Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder: Promising Results.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a combination of developmental anomalies that causes social and behavioral impairments, affecting around 2% of US children. Common symptoms include difficulties in communications, interactions, and behavioral disabilities. The onset of symptoms can start in early childhood, yet repeated visits to a pediatric specialist are needed before reaching a diagnosis. Still, this diagnosis is usually subjective, and scores can vary from one specialist to another. Previous literature suggests differences in brain development, environmental, and/or genetic factors play a

Neuromodulation of Cortical Targets in Freezing of Gait.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling feature of Parkinson's Disease (PD) with unclear underlying pathophysiology. Evidence from multimodal neuroimaging studies suggests that complex interactions between cortical and subcortical areas may occur in FOG. While noninvasive neuromodulation techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), can effectively modulate large-scale networks involved in FOG, the development of noninvasive neuromodulation interventions is limited by an incomplete understanding of the interactions between underlying network disruptions and FOG behavior. Recent st

Sex difference in neural substrates linking negative body image and disordered eating behaviors.

Based on the dual-pathway model, negative body image concerning body weight/shape has been widely recognized as a critical risk factor influencing disordered eating behaviors. Despite progress in behavioral mechanisms regarding the relationship, the neural mechanisms remain unknown. Moreover, sex difference should be considered due to its salient role in neural representations underpinning negative body image. To address these issues, this study employed resting state fMRI technique to examine the sex differences in functional connectivity (FC) characteristics underlying negative body image in

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for management of mental health and stress-related disorders: Recent advances in techniques and technologies.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps individuals to eliminate avoidant and safety-seeking behaviors that prevent self-correction of faulty beliefs, thereby facilitating stress management to reduce stress-related disorders and enhance mental health. The present review evaluated the effectiveness of CBT in stressful conditions among clinical and general populations, and identified recent advances in CBT-related techniques. A search of the literature for studies conducted during 1987-2021 identified 345 articles relating to biopsychosocial medicine; 154 (45%) were review articles, including 1

Phenylpropanolamine and amphetamine disrupt postprandial satiety in rats.

Two tests of the behavioral specificity of the anorectic effects of amphetamine (AM) and phenylpropanolamine (PPA) were done. Intraperitoneal injections of each drug reduced the size of condensed milk test meals in 30-min pellet-deprived rats. The dose-response relations in semi-log coordinates were linear and parallel, but AM (ED50, 2.0 +/- 0.1 mumol/kg) was about ten times more potent than PPA (ED50, 24.6 +/- 0.1 mumol/kg). Periprandial behaviors were observed using a time-sampling technique. Both AM and PPA disrupted the normal behavioral sequence of postprandial satiety throughout their an

Comparison of chemo-mechanical and conventional caries removal methods in 6-to-12-year-old children: Randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: To address the discomfort associated with conventional drilling for caries removal in children, a minimally invasive approach such as chemo-mechanical caries removal was developed. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of, and patient behavior associated with chemo-mechanical caries removal versus conventional drilling in children aged 6-12 years. METHODS: A split-mouth randomized clinical trial was conducted involving 66 molar teeth. The effectiveness of Papacarie Duo Gel and conventional drilling methods was assessed using colony-forming unit (CFU) counts before and afte

Differential behavioral outcomes in the sciatic cryoneurolysis model of neuropathic pain in rats.

We have previously introduced a novel animal model of neuropathic pain in rats following a peripheral mononeuropathy produced by freezing the common sciatic nerve, a technique termed sciatic cryoneurolysis (SCN). In this study, we have further characterized the temporal pattern of behavioral changes following SCN, including thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia. These behaviors were assessed using noxious thermal (radiant heat) and non-noxious tactile (von Frey filament) stimuli, respectively. Following unilateral SCN, animals exhibited significant (P < 0.001) bilateral tactile hyperse

The role of parietal cortex in overimitation: a study with fNIRS.

Previous studies have shown right parietal activation in response to observing irrational actions. Behavioral studies show that people sometimes imitate irrational actions, a phenomenon called overimitation. However, limitations on movement in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) mean that the neural basis of overimitation has not been studied. To address this, our study employed a less restrictive neuroimaging technique, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Measurements were taken while participants observed either rational or irrational movements before performing movements

Mercury speciation by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and sequential chemical extractions: a comparison of speciation methods.

Determining the chemical speciation of mercury in contaminated mining and industrial environments is essential for predicting its solubility, transport behavior, and potential bioavailability as well as for designing effective remediation strategies. In this study, two techniques for determining Hg speciation--X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and sequential chemical extractions (SCE)--are independently applied to a set of samples with Hg concentrations ranging from 132 to 7539 mg/kg to determine if the two techniques provide comparable Hg speciation results. Generally, the p

Sliding Mode Observer with Exponential Reaching Law for Speed Estimation of a Six-Phase Induction Machine.

High-performance sensorless operation in multiphase electric drives requires speed estimation techniques capable of providing fast dynamic response, reduced oscillatory behavior, and low implementation complexity. In this context, a sliding-mode observer (SMO) based on an exponential reaching law (ERL) is proposed for rotor speed estimation in asymmetrical six-phase induction machines operating under indirect rotor field-oriented control. Unlike conventional SMO implementations, the proposed approach avoids auxiliary low-pass filtering (LPF) stages by employing an ERL-based adaptive gain mecha

Delayed mating in the malaria vector Anopheles funestus compared to Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mating is a vital behavior for mosquito reproduction, yet it remains poorly understood under captive conditions. We examined the copulation dynamics of 2 key malaria vectors, Anopheles funestus sensu stricto Giles and Anopheles arabiensis Patton, under laboratory settings in Tanzania. We conducted observations in 24-h cycles and monitored copulation events and insemination of females, initially using flashlights for nighttime visibility, followed by red lights in subsequent experiments. We observed how variations in mosquito age and artificial lighting influenced mating success for these 2 mos

ZL006 mitigates anxiety-like behaviors induced by closed head injury through modulation of the neural circuit from the medial prefrontal cortex to amygdala.

Closed head injury is a prevalent form of traumatic brain injury with poorly understood effects on cortical neural circuits. Given the emotional and behavioral impairments linked to closed head injury, it is vital to uncover brain functional deficits and their driving mechanisms. In this study, we employed a robust viral tracing technique to identify the alteration of the neural pathway connecting the medial prefrontal cortex to the basolateral amygdala, and we observed the disruptions in neuronal projections between the medial prefrontal cortex and the basolateral amygdala following closed he
