Change in Parental Depressive Symptoms in Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Depressive symptoms are frequently described in parents whose children have been exposed to traumatic events. Hence, including nonoffending parents in trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) for children and adolescents may help both children and their parents to cope with the trauma. Up to now, three randomized controlled trials have investigated parental depressive symptoms after TF-CBT. Given the ambiguous results, further effectiveness trials are needed to investigate parental benefit from TF-CBT. The aim of this study is to determine whether TF-CBT is superior to

Category verbal fluency predicted changes in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

AIM: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive symptoms and behavioral symptoms, and their association is inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive function and the changes in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with AD. METHODS: A total of 101 patients with probable AD were enrolled (57 women and 44 men, mean age 77.6 +/- 7.7 years). The Category Verbal Fluency Test (CVFT), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Constructional Praxis Test, the Delayed Word Recall Test, the Clinical Dementia R…

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for children with functional abdominal pain and their parents decreases pain and other symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Unexplained abdominal pain in children has been shown to be related to parental responses to symptoms. This randomized controlled trial tested the efficacy of an intervention designed to improve outcomes in idiopathic childhood abdominal pain by altering parental responses to pain and children's ways of coping and thinking about their symptoms. METHODS: Two hundred children with persistent functional abdominal pain and their parents were randomly assigned to one of two conditions-a three-session intervention of cognitive-behavioral treatment targeting parents' responses to their c

Increased levels of glutamate in the central nervous system are associated with behavioral symptoms in experimental malaria.

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a severe complication resulting from Plasmodium falciparum infection. This condition has been associated with cognitive, behavioral and motor dysfunctions, seizures and coma. The underlying mechanisms of CM are incompletely understood. Glutamate and other metabolites such as lactate have been implicated in its pathogenesis. In the present study, we investigated the involvement of glutamate in the behavioral symptoms of CM. Seventeen female C57BL/6 mice (20-25 g) aged 6-8 weeks were infected with P. berghei ANKA by the intraperitoneal route using a standardized inoculat…

Retrospective reports of behavioral inhibition and young adults' current symptoms of social anxiety, depression, and anxious arousal.

The primary goal of this study was to investigate the specificity of the social versus nonsocial components of self-reported behavioral inhibition during childhood with young adults' current symptoms of anhedonic depression, social anxiety, and anxious arousal. As hypothesized, the social component of BI demonstrated some specificity for symptoms of social anxiety versus other internalizing disorders. Furthermore, results support the hypothesis that the relationship between BI and depressive symptoms is mediated by levels of social anxiety and anxious arousal.

Domains of life satisfaction in social anxiety disorder: relation to symptoms and response to cognitive-behavioral therapy.

A general sense of satisfaction with life has been shown to be discriminable from symptom levels and disability in clinical populations. The current study focused on the utility of identifying domains of life satisfaction in social anxiety disorder and differential changes in these domains following cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT). An exploratory principal axis factor analysis of the items of the Quality of Life Inventory in clients with a principal diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (N=138) yielded four domains of life satisfaction: (1) Achievement, (2) Social Functioning, (3) Per

Care Recipient Controlling and Manipulative Behavior and Caregiver Depressive Symptoms: The Role of Race, Caregiver Resentment, and Mutual Communal Behavior.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We explored whether relationship quality, as measured by mutual communal behavior, would serve as a buffer against caregiver resentment and, consequently, depressive symptoms when care recipients (CRs) engage in problem behavior (i.e., controlling and manipulative behavior [CMB]). Using the common core model of caregiver distress, we hypothesized that caregiver resentment would explain why caregivers were depressed when their CRs engage in CMB. We predicted that the indirect effect of CRCMB on depressive symptoms via resentment would depend on the strength of the com

Differential trajectories of depression symptoms during pregnancy and prospective associations with postpartum eating disorder symptoms and cardiovascular health behaviors.

PURPOSE: Approximately one-in-ten individuals experience depression during pregnancy, a period marked by considerable biopsychosocial change. Prior research has investigated perinatal depressive symptom change and identified links to negative health outcomes, such as hypertension and delivery complications. However, it is unknown if these findings extend to pregnant people with higher weight, who may have increased risk. Additionally, understanding how depression experiences during pregnancy impact postpartum eating disorder (ED) symptoms and cardiovascular health behaviors can provide insight

Insomnia Symptom Improvement as a Mediator for Mental Health Symptom Reduction Following Behavioral Insomnia Treatment Among Women Veterans.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) improves comorbid mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]), with sleep improvements hypothesized as the mechanism for the observed improvements. This study examined change in insomnia severity as a mediator of mental health symptom improvements in women veterans following behavioral insomnia treatment. Secondary analysis was conducted using data from a comparative effectiveness trial that evaluated insomnia outcomes in women veterans following CBT-I and an acceptance and commitment therapy-informed

Peer and familial influences on the association between behavioral inhibition and trajectories of social anxiety symptoms across adolescence.

Behavioral inhibition (BI) is one of the most reliable predictors of social anxiety, and both peers and family members play a key role in shaping this association. In a sample of adolescents enriched for elevated BI and social anxiety symptoms, we examined (1) the moderating role of familial and close peer relationship qualities on associations between BI, concurrent social anxiety symptoms, and social anxiety symptom trajectories and (2) indirect effects of adolescent BI on social anxiety through close peer and familial relationship qualities. Furthermore, we examined sex differences in these

Changes of borderline symptoms, personality functioning, and dysfunctional personality traits after dialectical-behavioral therapy in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex and debilitating condition characterized by limited treatment response and high dropout rates across treatments, even in leading therapeutic approaches, such as Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Given the heterogeneity of BPD symptomatology and the current shift toward dimensional assessments of personality disorders, this study investigates whether dimensional measures according to the DSM-5's Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) may serve as additional markers of treatment outcome and dropout. Eighty-five participants with
