BACKGROUND: The biliary bronchial fistula is rare and difficult to treat. Here we report a 49-year-old woman diagnosed with biliary bronchial fistula due to cough with yellow-green sputum.
CASE PRESENTATION: this is a typical case of the biliary bronchial fistula with typical symptoms. The position of the abscess cavity below the diaphragm could not be catheter drainage. After anti-infection treatment, yellow-green sputum was reduced. Follow-up showed a good prognosis.
CONCLUSION: biliary bronchial fistula is rare in the clinic, combined with chest and abdomen infection.

BACKGROUND: Biliary pericardial tamponade (BPT) is a rare form of pericardial tamponade, characterized by yellowish-greenish pericardial fluid upon pericardiocentesis. Historically, BPT reported to occur in the setting of an associated pericardiobiliary fistula. However, BPT in the absence of a detectable fistula is extremely rare.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: A biliary pericardial tamponade is a rare form of tamponade warranting a prompt workup (e.g., MRCP or HIDA scan) for a potential fistula between the biliary system and the pericardial space. A pericardio-biliary fistula can be iatrogenic or trau…

Biliary fistulas are most commonly caused by cholelithiasis. Other causes include malignancies and peptic ulcer disease. A biliary fistula caused by a penetrating trauma is a rare entity, and a post-traumatic biliary fistula to the renal collecting system is extremely uncommon. We present an extremely rare case of a post-traumatic nephrobiliary fistula incurred after penetrating trauma that was successfully treated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), biliary stents, and percutaneous drainage.

PURPOSE: Infantile spontaneous biliary perforation is rare with variable management strategies ranging from nonoperative treatment to complex operations such as biliary-enteric reconstruction. Biliary fistula and portal vein thrombosis are known complications, though outcomes are poorly defined.
METHODS: We assessed the incidence of spontaneous biliary perforation in infants <1 year old using a population database. Next, we describe 4 patients treated at our institution and review all reported cases within the past 25 years.
RESULTS: The incidence of spontaneous biliary perforation is 1.5 in…

Eight cholangio-thoracic fistula patients were seen from 1981 to 1987 in our hospital. The clinical features of the cases were classified into four types, i.e. bronchobiliary fistula (BBF, 3 cases), bronchopleurobiliary fistula (BPBF, 2 cases), pleurobiliary fistula (PBF, 2 cases) and pericardiobiliary fistula (PCBF, 1 case). In addition to a history of cholangitis or cholelithiasis and continuous or intermittent secondary biliary tract infection, the principle manifestations of BBF included: acute, subacute or chronic biliary empyema; biliary pneumonia or biliary lung abscess; and biliptysis.…

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis, caused by larval stages of taeniid cestodes, primarily affects the liver and is commonly treated surgically. However, a complication post-treatment is biliary fistula, necessitating interventions like biliary stents. While stent complications are recognized, proximal migration leading to pneumonia is exceptionally rare. This case report details an unusual occurrence of biliary stent migration years after hepatic hydatid echinococcosis treatment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: A serious complication of hepatic hydatid cyst disease is communication between the cyst and the biliary tree. Surgical management of biliary fistulas is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We carried out a prospective study of endoscopic management of hydatid cysts communicating with bile ducts in 28 patients.
METHODS: Presence of biliary fistula was suspected by jaundice and/or persistent external biliary fistula after surgical excision and was confirmed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Patients underwent endoscopic sphincterotomy, and …

Although biliary fistulae are common, spontaneous biliary fistulae are very rare. Even more rare are spontaneous cholecysto-cutaneous fistulae. A case of spontaneous cholecysto-cutaneous fistula presenting through an abdominal scar mimicking a postoperative scar sinus is presented, the literature is reviewed and the reasons for occurrence of such a fistula are discussed.

Fistula formation between the bronchi and peritoneal cavity is extremely rare. In previous reports, fistulas have occurred secondary to thoraco-abdominal trauma, subphrenic abscess, suppurative biliary tract obstruction, malignancy and iatrogenically through procedures such as biliary surgery or percutaneous biliary drainage. The direction of fistula formation has always been thought to be from the peritoneal cavity to the bronchi: there are no reports of a fistula with a bronchial origin. This case report presents a patient who presented with sepsis and a bronchoperitoneal fistula and pneumop

33 hydatid cysts of the liver, opened into the biliary tract were reviewed. The biliary fistula was located in the biliary tract: 16 cases in the right, 14 cases in the left, 1 case in the common bile duct, and 3 cases in the gallbladder. (One case had fistula in the gallbladder and the anterior sectorial canal). Surgical treatment was conservative in 21 cases: bipolar drainage in 10 cases and cysto-biliary disconnection in 11 cases. The treatment was radical in 12 cases: Pericystectomy in 5 cases and liver resection in 7 cases. One postoperative death was observed following bipolar drainage-P…

Spontaneous external biliary fistula or cholecystocutaneous fistula is defined as the rupture of the gallbladder through all layers of the abdominal wall, with development of a fistulous tract to the skin without prior biliary surgery or trauma. We report the case of an octogenarian woman with debilitating comorbidities and consequently immunosuppression who presented with spontaneous external biliary fistula and a history of ERCP three months before, a procedure that was carried out with no apparent immediate complications.

Biliary obstruction in the rat causes known biochemical and morphological abnormalities. These abnormalities might be caused simply by retention of biliary constituents or might require other factors such as high biliary pressure, interruption of the normal flux of fluid, ions, and other biliary constituents through the hepatocyte and/or changes in intracellular concentrations, binding, and distribution of biliary constituents. We studied a choledochocaval (CC) fistula rat model characterized by complete biliary retention without bile stasis. CC fistula animals were compared with biliary obstr

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease affects most commonly the liver, and rupture into the bile ducts is a frequent complication, occurring in 5% to 25% of cases. These complications can cause major clinical problems either preoperatively or postoperatively with post-resectional abscess or prolonged biliary fistula. We reviewed our experience with preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) and the diagnosis of major cyst-biliary fistula.
METHODS: During a 7-year period, 78 patients underwent surgery for hepatic hydatid disease. Ten patients, in whom a major intrabiliary rupture of the cy…

Copious persistent postcholecystectomy biliary fistula may result from severing a large unrecognized aberrant duct from the right lobe of the liver that empties into the gallbladder or cystic duct. Recognition of aberrant biliary ducts and identification of the major intrahepatic biliary radicles on cholangiography are emphasized. Two cases are presented. In 1 case percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) made the diagnosis. PTC is a safe, accurate method for evaluating postcholecystectomy biliary fistula.

Cholecystenteric fistula is one of the rarest complications of biliary lithiasis, with a frequency of less than 1%. Bouveret syndrome is a gastric outlet obstruction produced by gallstone(s) located in the distal stomach or proximal duodenum. The route of gallstone migration to the bowel is most commonly via a cholecystoduodenal fistula; however, fistulization of the stomach is a rarer variation. Early diagnosis of this situation is crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. In this report, we present a patient with cholecystogastric fistula and Bouveret syndrome. To our knowledge, there is no

Eighteen patients with postoperative fistulas of the gastrointestinal tract were treated with the somatostatin analog octreotide between November 1989 and November 1992. Fourteen patients had enterocutaneous fistulas: seven from the duodenum and seven from the ileum. Another three patients had pancreatic fistulas, and one patient had a biliary fistula. Within 24 hours of octreotide treatment, a mean reduction of 52% in the intestinal fistulas' output, 40% in the pancreatic fistulas, and 30% in the biliary fistula was noted. In the intestinal fistulas group the closure rate was 72% after a mean…

INTRODUCTION: Cholecystocolonic fistula is a rare condition and is found in roughly 1 in every 10,000. It represents 6.3% to 26.5% of all cholecystenteric fistulas (Chowbey et al., 2006; Angrisani et al., 2001; Yamashita et al., 1997). Cholecystocolonic fistula is the second most common intestinal fistula after cholecystoduodenal fistula (Costi et al., 2009). Rarity of this condition, atypical presentation, diagnostic and management challenges, makes it a unique surgical entity.
