OBJECTIVES: Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) is a common condition where the vocal folds inappropriately adduct during inspiration. This results in dyspnea and occasionally significant distress. The condition is thought to be primarily functional, with behavioural therapy considered mainstay in the non-acute setting. However, practice variations and limited access to speech language pathology (SLP) services can pose management challenges. We aimed to examine the efficacy of surgeon performed visual biofeedback as first-line treatment for PVFM.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, non-randomized, no

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunctional voiding (DV) in children is a common issue, which can be found in up to 30% of children with wetting problems. Biofeedback assisted pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is an established nonpharmacological method to treat DV. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of physiotherapeutic intervention with biofeedback assisted PFMT in children with DV.
STUDY DESIGN: Children referred with DV, unresponsive to standard urotherapy were included in this study. All children underwent biofeedback assisted PFMT sessions with a physiotherapist. Uroflowmetries

PURPOSE: Gait modifications designed to change a single kinematic parameter have reduced first peak internal knee abduction moment (PKAM). Prior research suggests unintended temporospatial and kinematic changes occur naturally while performing these modifications. We aimed to investigate i) the concomitant kinematic and temporospatial changes and ii) the relationship between gait parameters during three gait modifications (toe-in, medial knee thrust, and trunk lean gait).
METHODS: Using visual real-time biofeedback, we collected 10 trials for each modification using individualized target gait

Cleft Palate (CP) assessments based on phonetic transcription are the "gold standard" therapy outcome measure, despite reliability difficulties. Here we propose a novel perceptual evaluation, applied to ultrasound-visual biofeedback (U-VBF) therapy and therapy using visual articulatory models (VAMs) for two children with repaired submucous CP. Three comparisons were made: post VAM, post U-VBF and overall pre- and post-therapy. Twenty-two phonetically-trained listeners were asked to determine whether pre- or post-therapy recordings sounded "closer to the English target", using their own implici

This study used video feedback to improve the horseback-riding skills of advanced beginning riders. We focused on 3 skill sets: those used in jumping over obstacles, dressage riding on the flat, and jumping position riding on the flat. Baseline consisted of standard lesson procedures. Intervention consisted of video feedback in which a recorded attempt at the target behavior was immediately shown to the rider and the instructor. The rider and instructor reviewed the video while the instructor delivered feedback. After the lesson, experimenters scored riding position according to checklists tha

This paper provides an overview of the well-established and empirically supported behavioral interventions for the treatment of migraine. The considerable evidence base addressing behavioral interventions amassed since 1969 has conclusively established the efficacy of therapies featuring combinations of relaxation, biofeedback, and stress management training, and demonstrated they are capable of yielding benefits on par with pharmacological therapies for migraine. Behavioral interventions also are well suited for delivery across a variety of different contexts (e.g., group vs. individual, stan

The restoration of walking ability is crucial for maximizing independent mobility among patients with stroke. Leg cycling is becoming an established intervention to supplement ambulation training for stroke patients with problems of unbalance and weakness. The aim of the study was to explore the feasibility of a biofeedback pedaling treatment and its effects on cycling and walking ability in chronic stroke patients. Three patients were included in the study. The training consisted of a 2-week treatment of 6 sessions, during which a visual biofeedback helped the participants in maintaining a sy

The aims of the present meta-analysis were to investigate the short- and long-term efficacy, multidimensional outcome, and treatment moderators of biofeedback as a behavioral treatment option for tension-type headache. A literature search identified 74 outcome studies, of which 53 were selected according to predefined inclusion criteria. Meta-analytic integration resulted in a significant medium-to-large effect size (d = 0.73; 95% confidence interval = 0.61, 0.84) that proved stable over an average follow-up phase of 15 months. Biofeedback was more effective than headache monitoring, placebo,

UNLABELLED: Pelvic physical therapy focuses on the prevention and the treatment of all kinds of functional disorders of the abdominal, pelvic and low back region, like urinary incontinence, that is considered as a high prevalent health problem in women, men, children and the elderly. Physical therapy is often considered as the first-choice treatment, due to its non-invasive character, the results in terms of symptom relief, the possibility of combining physical therapy with other treatments, the low risk of side effects and the moderate to low costs. Important restrictions for success might be

OBJECTIVE: We developed a new training method of biofeedback rehabilitation for the prevention of synkinesis after facial palsy and evaluated the efficacy of the training.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with complete facial palsy were divided randomly into 2 groups. Twelve of the patients were treated with the training method, and the other 15 patients served as controls. Patients were instructed to keep their eyes open symmetrically during mouth movements using a mirror. Thirty minutes of daily training was continued for a period of 10 months. The degree of synkinesis was evaluated by comput

Although the neurobiologic basis of CPPSs in men remains unclear, therapeutic interventions should continue to be improved. Invasive or destructive modalities should be avoided when possible. Electrical neuromodulation techniques seem to be a promising, among other multimodal approaches. Physicians must learn from patients in attempt to relieve symptoms.

The aim of this review was to consolidate the impact of recent advances in investigation technology on the clinical diagnostic workup for faecal incontinence. A literature search was made with emphasis on the recent 15 years. The advent of imaging techniques, particularly endoanal ultrasound has improved the understanding of anal incontinence. Of particular significance was the much higher incidence of anal sphincter injuries after childbirth, than previously suspected. Also important was the clarification of the entity of primary degeneration of the internal anal sphincter. Although endoanal

This paper presents a brief overview of a control systems framework for understanding normal and abnormal posture, with a special emphasis on postural control during arm movements. The need for meaningful and valid definitions of postural output is discussed. A distinction is drawn between the joint posture and balance outputs of the system. The roles of commands and perturbing inputs in controlling and disturbing joint posture and balance are described. The effects of initial conditions on command inputs and postural outputs are considered. Mechanisms for correcting postural errors are descri
