Epidemiological profile of snake-bite cases from Haryana: A five year (2011-2015) retrospective study.

Varieties of venomous snakes inhabit in the world which accidentally take thousands of human lives every year. This severe medical emergency constantly persuades national and international health agencies to look at efficient epidemiological profiling of snake-bite cases for the proper management of this sympathetic problem. Establishing the accurate database of snake-bite in humans from different localities of India may perhaps lack certainty due to few inevitable reasons such as consideration of this problem as less emergent problem in disparity to pesticide poisoning, difficulty in the acce

Hydrocephalus in snake bite: a rare manifestation with review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Snake bites are pretty common in the rural farming population of India. Approximately 300 species of snakes are considered medically significant by the WHO. Snake bites can be venomous or non-venomous. The toxins present in the saliva of the snake are called venom, which can cause detrimental effects on the human body, the reason being multiple enzymes and molecules that act on various tissues of the human body. The toxin can be neurotoxins or hematotoxins, or it can also have a mixed effect as well. Intracranial manifestations due to snake bites are not quite common. They may have

Whole venom of Loxosceles similis activates caspases-3, -6, -7, and -9 in human primary skin fibroblasts.

Spiders of the Loxosceles genus represent a risk to human health due to the systemic and necrotic effects of their bites. The main symptoms of these bites vary from dermonecrosis, observed in the majority of cases, to occasional systemic hemolysis and coagulopathy. Although the systemic effects are well characterized, the mechanisms of cell death triggered by the venom of these spiders are poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the cell death mechanisms induced by the whole venom of the spider Loxosceles similis in human skin fibroblasts. Our results show that the venom initiates

Risk of Ixodes ricinus Bites in a Population of Forestry Workers in an Endemic Region in France.

The progressing worldwide increases in tick occurrence and tick-borne diseases calls for the development of new prevention strategies to reduce their impact on human and animal health. Defining the risk of exposure to tick bites is therefore essential. Forestry workers are at high risk of tick bites. We set up an explorative study among forestry workers in the Alsace region in eastern France to measure the different factors affecting the risk of Ixodes ricinus tick bites during their activities in forests. For one year, forestry workers recorded the presence of ticks on their clothes and tick

[Microbiology of infections caused by dog and cat bites: A review].

BACKGROUND: Bites caused by pets constitute 5% of the traumatic injuries registered in the emergency services. AIM: To know the main infectious agents present in dog and cat bites, both individually and jointly, in humans, as well as the predisposing factors that favor infection and its spread. METHODS: A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed with the following search strategy: (("Bites, Human" [Mesh]) OR "Bites and Stings" [Mesh]) AND "Infection" [Mesh]. Twenty-four papers were included in the qualitative synthesis written in English or Spanish, clinical or descriptive cases and pu…

Using volunteered observations to map human exposure to ticks.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in Europe and its incidence has steadily increased over the last two decades. In the Netherlands alone, more than 20,000 citizens are affected by LB each year. Because of this, two Dutch citizen science projects were started to monitor tick bites. Both projects have collected nearly 50,000 geo-located tick bite reports over the period 2006-2016. The number of tick bite reports per area unit is a proxy of tick bite risk. This risk can also be modelled as the result of the interaction of hazard (e.g. tick activity) and human exposure

Use of forensic analysis to better understand shark attack behaviour.

Shark attacks have primarily been analyzed from wound patterns, with little knowledge of a shark's approach, behaviour and intention leading to such wounds. For the first time, during a shark-human interaction project in South Africa, a white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, was filmed biting a vertically positioned person at the water surface, and exhibiting distinct approach patterns leading to the bite. This bite was compared to ten white shark attacks that occurred (i) in the same geographical area of South Africa, and (ii) where the same body parts were bitten. Close similarity of some of t

Incidence of dog bite injuries and its associated factors in Punjab province of Pakistan.

Dog bites are a major cause for transmission of rabies virus to humans. Pakistan ranks fifth among most rabies affected countries in the world. There are a few regional (ecological) studies that investigated factors that explain geographic disparities in incidence of dog bite injuries. The main objective of this research was to document findings of spatial exploratory data analysis of incidence of reported cases of dog bite in Punjab province of Pakistan (2016-2019). In addition, we have quantified the association between incidence of dog bites and a set of selected socio-economic and demograp

Diversity of anopheline species and malaria transmission dynamics in high-altitude areas of western Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Assessing vector bionomics and their role in transmission is crucial to improving vector control strategies. Several entomological studies have been conducted to describe malaria transmission in different eco-epidemiological settings in Cameroon; however, data gaps persist, particularly in the highland areas. This study aimed to characterize malaria vectors in three localities along an altitudinal gradient in the western region: Santchou (700 m), Dschang (1400 m) and Penka Michel (1500 m). METHODS: Human landing catches were conducted from May to June 2023 in 17 villages (includin

Who Bites Me? A Tentative Discriminative Key to Diagnose Hematophagous Ectoparasites Biting Using Clinical Manifestations.

Arthropod blood feeders are vectors of several human pathogenic agents, including viruses (e.g., yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue fever), parasites (e.g., malaria, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis), or bacteria (e.g., plague). Besides their role as a vector of pathogens, their biting activities cause a nuisance to humans. Herein, we document clinical symptoms associated with the biting of ten clusters of hematophagous arthropods, including mosquitoes, biting midges and sandflies, lice, ticks, tsetse flies, blackflies, horse flies, fleas, triatomine and bed bugs. Within the framework of cli

Sickle-trait hemoglobin does not influence Anopheles biting rates.

Children with sickle cell trait (HbAS) are protected against severe and symptomatic Plasmodium falciparum malaria. While several within-host resistance mechanisms have been investigated, it is unknown whether this protection may be attributable in part to reductions in exposure to P. falciparum parasites via mosquito bites. In a 15-month cohort in Western Kenya, we matched mosquito bloodmeals to human hosts based on short tandem repeat (STR) genotypes to determine individual mosquito biting rates. Using a multilevel multivariable model, we assessed mosquito biting behavior with respect to huma

A Case of Recurrent Pasteurella Bacteremia in an Immunocompetent Patient with No Animal Bite.

BACKGROUND Pasteurella multocida is a gram negative-penicillin sensitive bacterium and is part of normal respiratory microbiota of animals (e.g., cats and dogs) and some birds. Various infections in humans, such as cellulitis, rarely bacteremia, endocarditis, meningitis, and septic arthritis, are a result of domestic cat or dog bites. These infections are rarely seen in an immunocompetent person, without an associated animal bite. CASE REPORT We present a case of refractory Pasteurella multocida bacteremia without any animal bite in an immunocompetent person. CONCLUSIONS Pasteurella multocida

Is injection of contaminated animal bite wounds with rabies immune globulin a safe practice?

In Asia, it is still controversial whether it is safe to inject a contaminated animal bite wound with a foreign protein such as equine or human rabies immune globulin, even though this is recommended by the World Health Organization. A prospective study of 114 severe animal bite wounds which were injected with equine or human rabies immune globulin revealed an overall incidence of gross infection of 11.4%. No matched control group of patients bitten by animals whose wounds were not injected with immune globulin could be studied in this environment with a high prevalence of canine rabies. The i

Why are the ticks winning, and what can we do about it?

Human illness associated with tick bites is on the rise in the United States. One root cause is that several human-biting tick species serving as pathogen vectors, including the blacklegged tick and the lone star tick, have expanded their geographic ranges in recent decades, with many areas in the U.S. now harboring multiple species of vector ticks. As currently used, personal tick bite prevention and environmental tick control have not succeeded in stemming the rising tide of humans being bitten by ticks. A national strategy to prevent and control vector-borne diseases provides a blueprint to

Anopheles funestus sensu stricto Giles (Diptera:Culicidae) bites after sunrise at two rural villages in northern Malawi and its implications for malaria vector control.

INTRODUCTION: Malawi has scaled up distribution and use of LLINs but their effectiveness depends on vector behaviour. This study reports information on where and when peak biting takes place by Anopheles vectors at two study sites in northern Malawi. METHODS: The study was carried out at a single village each in Nkhata Bay and Karonga districts, northern Malawi. Monthly, three teams of four people each sampled mosquitoes using Human Landing Collections (HLCs) from 6.00 pm to 6.00 am. Mosquitoes were counted and identified by PCR. Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites were detected by ELISA and an

Biting behaviour and biting rhythm of potential Japanese encephalitis vectors in Assam.

Studies on biting behaviour and biting cycles of medically important mosquitoes were carried out in Madhupur village and Tarajan tea estate of upper Assam. Collections were made off human baits outdoors and indoors and off cattle bait outdoors from August 1991 to July 1992. Human bait collections were performed using the 'stationary direct bait' technique. A total of 9,072 adult host seeking female mosquitoes representing 26 species and 5 genera were collected off baits of which 36.9% were collected off human baits and the rest from cattle. All mosquitoes were primarily zoophilic, although sig
