Transcriptome profiling of the early developmental stages in the giant mussel Choromytilus chorus exposed to delousing drugs.

The giant mussel Choromytilus chorus is a marine bivalve commonly collected in central - southern Chile from fishery zones shared with the salmon industry. These economically relevant areas are also affected by the use of pesticides for controlling sea lice infestations in salmon aquaculture. Their main target is the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi. However, other than some physiological impacts, the molecular effects of delousing drugs in non-target species such as C. chorus remain largely understudied. This study aimed to explore the transcriptome modulation of Trochophore and D larvae stage

Survey of Tetrodotoxin in New Zealand Bivalve Molluscan Shellfish over a 16-Month Period.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a heat-stable neurotoxin typically associated with pufferfish intoxications. It has also been detected in shellfish from Japan, the United Kingdom, Greece, China, Italy, the Netherlands and New Zealand. A recent European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) scientific opinion concluded that a level of <0.044 mg TTX/kg in marine bivalves and gastropods, based on a 400 g portion size, does not result in adverse effects in humans. There have been no reports of human illness attributed to the consumption of New Zealand shellfish containing TTX. To obtain a greater understanding of it

Resource partitioning among brachiopods and bivalves at ancient hydrocarbon seeps: A hypothesis.

Brachiopods were thought to have dominated deep-sea hydrothermal vents and hydrocarbon seeps for most of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic, and were believed to have been outcompeted and replaced by chemosymbiotic bivalves during the Late Cretaceous. But recent findings of bivalve-rich seep deposits of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age have questioned this paradigm. By tabulating the generic diversity of the dominant brachiopod and bivalve clades-dimerelloid brachiopods and chemosymbiotic bivalves-from hydrocarbon seeps through the Phanerozoic, we show that their evolutionary trajectories are largely unrela

Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) in raft mussels coming from Galician rías.

This survey gives an overview of the range of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) α and γ-HCH (lindane), HCB, pp´-DDE, pp´-DDD, op´-DDT, pp´-DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, isodrin and trans-nonachlor in raft mussels cultivated in several polygons of the Galician Rías (Ares-Betanzos, Muros-Noia, Arousa, Pontevedra and Vigo) during the period 1998-2014. A significant number of OCPs were detected, but the levels found were generally low, mainly in the recent samplings (2010-2014). The levels of ∑DDs (sum of DDTs and its metabolites, pp´-DDE and pp´-DDD) ranged between 0.22 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sa

Antiviral Activity of Myticin C Peptide from Mussel: an Ancient Defense against Herpesviruses.

UNLABELLED: Little is known about the antiviral response in mollusks. As in other invertebrates, the interferon signaling pathways have not been identified, and in fact, there is a debate about whether invertebrates possess antiviral immunity similar to that of vertebrates. In marine bivalves, due to their filtering activity, interaction with putative pathogens, including viruses, is very high, suggesting that they should have mechanisms to address these infections. In this study, we confirmed that constitutively expressed molecules in naive mussels confer resistance in oysters to ostreid herp

Are natural reservoirs important for cholera surveillance? The case of an outbreak in a Brazilian estuary.

UNLABELLED: Paranaguá Bay is one of the largest estuarine systems on the Southern Brazilian coast. The only recorded cholera outbreak in this region since the early 20th century occurred in 1999 and resulted in 467 cases and at least three reported deaths in a population of approx. 150 000 people. This short communication reports historical, unpublished data related to that outbreak. Water, zooplankton and bivalve samples were collected and evaluated using direct fluorescence assay to determine whether Vibrio cholerae serogroups O1 and O139 were present in the estuarine system at that time. Role of non-enzymatic antioxidants on the bivalves' adaptation to environmental mercury: Organ-specificities and age effect in Scrobicularia plana inhabiting a contaminated lagoon.

This study aimed to investigate the role of non-enzymatic antioxidants on adaptive skills over time in the bivalve Scrobicularia plana environmentally exposed to mercury. Inter-age (2(+), 3(+), 4(+), 5(+) year old) and organ-specific (gills, digestive gland) approaches were applied in bivalves collected from moderately and highly contaminated sites at Ria de Aveiro (Portugal). S. plana's adaptive skills were dependent on the contamination extent; under moderate contamination scenario, the intervention of the different antioxidants took place harmoniously, evidencing an adjustment capacity incr

Metal-solid interactions controlling the bioavailability of mercury from sediments to clams and sipunculans.

The bioavailability of sedimentary Hg(II) and methylmercury (MeHg) was quantified by measuring the assimilation efficiency (AE) in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum and the extraction of the gut juices from the sipunculan Sipunculus nudus. Three factors (Hg concentration in sediment, Hg sediment contact time, and organic content of sediments) were modified to examine metal-solid interactions in controlling Hg bioavailability. The Hg AEs in the clams were strongly correlated with the extraction from the sipunculan gut juices for both Hg species. The bioavailability of both Hg(II) and MeHg genera

Influences of different selenium species on the uptake and assimilation of Hg(II) and methylmercury by diatoms and green mussels.

We examined the influences of different concentrations and species of Se (selenite, selenate, and seleno-l-methionine) in the ambient environment on the accumulation of inorganic Hg(II) and methylmercury (MeHg) by the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and the green mussel Perna viridis. At the experimental concentrations tested (< 500 microgl(-1)), selenite and selenate did not significantly affect the uptake of either mercury species by the diatoms and the green mussels. The assimilation efficiency of Hg(II) and MeHg by the mussels from ingested diatoms was also independent of the inorganic Se

Habitat preference and the marine-speciation paradox.

Marine organisms challenge the classical theories of local adaptation and speciation because their planktonic larvae have the potential to maintain high gene flow. The marine-speciation paradox is illustrated by contact zones between incipient species that are so large that allopatric divergence seems unlikely. For this reason any mechanism preventing sympatric larvae of two incipient species from coexisting in the same habitats can be a powerful promoter of speciation. The contact zone between two hybridizing taxa of mussel, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis, in Europe provides an excel

[A food poisoning outbreak caused by purple Washington clam contaminated with norovirus (Norwalk-like virus) and hepatitis A virus].

A party of 57 people dined together in a restaurant in Hamamatsu City on December 11, 2001. The next day, 22 of them developed symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Examination of 4 fecal specimens from these patients by ELISA for Norovirus (Norwalk-like virus, NV) detected both genogroup I (GI) and genogroup II (GII) NV in all the 4 specimens. In addition, RT-PCR and real-time PCR methods for NV detected the NV gene. Approximately one month after the outbreak of the food poisoning (acute gastroenteritis) by NV, 4 individuals in the same party developed type

Effects of in vivo exposure of Mya arenaria to organic and inorganic mercury on phagocytic activity of hemocytes.

Marine bivalves are aquatic invertebrate organisms which can be used as bioindicators in environmental monitoring. In vivo effects of mercuric chloride (HgCl(2)) and methylmercury (CH(3)HgCl) on phagocytic function of Mya arenaria hemocytes were evaluated in this study. Clams were exposed to single metal in water for up to 28 days at concentrations ranging from 10(-9) to 10(-5) M. Phagocytic activity of hemocytes was determined by uptake of fluorescent microspheres and flow cytometry. All clams exposed to 10(-5) M HgCl(2) died by day 7 of exposure. The viability of hemocytes was decreased only

Simultaneous experimental study of direct and direct plus trophic contamination of the crayfish Astacus astacus by inorganic mercury and methylmercury.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate direct and direct plus trophic contamination routes of the crayfish Astacus astacus by inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) or methylmercury (MeHg). Direct exposure was based on low contamination conditions, 300 and 30 ng/L in the dissolved phase, respectively, during 30 d at 20 degrees C. Trophic exposure was based on daily consumption of the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea, previously contaminated during 40 d with similar exposure conditions. The Hg concentrations in the bivalves were very similar: 1,451 +/- 287 ng/g for Hg(II) and 1,346 +/- 143 ng/

Detection of localized methylmercury contamination by use of the mussel adductor muscle in Minamata Bay and Kagoshima Bay, Japan.

Based on our previous finding that the concentrations of total mercury in mussel adductor muscle approximated those of methylmercury, we compared concentrations of total mercury in the adductor muscle of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, collected from four sites around Minamata City from 1993 to 1995 and four sites in Kagoshima Bay from 1997 to 1998, to assess the level of localized methylmercury contamination. Though the input of mercury from the chemical plant had stopped by around 1970, concentrations of total mercury in the mussel adductor muscle were higher at two sites (26-121 ng/g,

Selective determination of methyl mercury in biological samples by means of programmed temperature gas chromatography.

A programmed temperature gas chromatographic method is presented by which it is possible to carry out routine analysis of methyl mercury in biological samples prepared according to the AOAC official first action recommendations without the need for preliminary treatment of the columns. This method greatly extends the life of the columns as well as the useful time for analysis; it has good linearity and repeatability. With the proposed method a total of 36 samples can be analyzed daily.

Identification and characterization of novel allergen candidates in blood clams (Anadara broughtonii and Tegillarca granosa) using proteomics and immunoinformatics.

Blood clams (Anadara broughtonii and Tegillarca granosa) are widely consumed in Southeast Asia and can trigger allergic reactions. Whereas tropomyosin and arginine kinase are established allergens, the broader allergen profile and cross-reactivity with shrimp remain poorly defined. Using gel and LC-MS-based proteomics, a novel immunoinformatic approach combining three algorithms and IgE immunoassays, we examined IgE-reactivity in shrimp-sensitized patients. Among 2580 identified proteins, 35 were from blood clams, while 9 were predicted as allergens. From IgE-reactive 2D gel spots, known aller

Transcriptomic insights into the coordinated regulation of signaling, apoptosis, immunity, and metabolism during Sinonovacula constricta larval metamorphosis.

Metamorphosis is a critical ontogenetic transition for marine bivalves, marking the shift from planktonic to benthic lifestyles, where successful transformation dictates survival. The razor clam Sinonovacula constricta is economically important; however, low larval metamorphosis rates remain a major bottleneck in seedling production. To elucidate the mechanisms governing this process, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis of S. constricta larvae at pre- and post-metamorphosis stages using Illumina sequencing. A total of 3701 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, in

A Dinophysistoxin 2-like Okadaic Acid Isomer Present in Bivalves and Water Column: Temporal and Spatial Distribution in the Northwest Iberian Peninsula.

A previously overlooked isomer of okadaic acid (OA), which is structurally related to dinophysistoxin-2 (DTX2), was identified in bivalves and water columns from the Northwest Iberian Peninsula. This isomer elutes chromatographically after DTX2 and before DTX1, with mass spectrometric fragmentation patterns distinct from those of OA. It occurs at lower concentrations than OA but at levels comparable to DTX2, showing a consistent presence since monitoring by LC-MS/MS began in 2014. The abundance of this isomer correlated more strongly with OA than with DTX2, suggesting that it originates mainly

Development of techniques for cryopreserving giant clam larvae.

Giant clams (Tridacna spp.) are keystone reef organisms that play important ecological roles in Indo-Pacific coral reef ecosystems. However, their populations have declined substantially because of overexploitation, habitat degradation, and climate change. Cryopreservation offers a potential strategy for preserving genetic resources and supporting future conservation and restoration efforts. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of cryopreserving D-stage larvae of Tridacna crocea and T. maxima using a two-step freezing protocol. The effects of different cryoprotectants, concentrations, a

Exploring of novel salt-enhancing peptides from manila clam: isolation, peptidomics and molecular characteristics.

This paper aimed to explore salt-enhancing peptides from the hydrolysates of Manila clam. Firstly, 265 peptides were identified in the hydrolysates of Manila clams. Then, 26 bioactive peptides were selected for molecular docking with the TMC4 receptor. Finally, peptides LF9 (-120.41 kcal/mol), EM9 (-118.10 kcal/mol), and SH9 (-112.49 kcal/mol) showed better docking affinities. Van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding were the main binding forces, with ARG583 and GLU286 identified as key residues. E-tongue showed that the three peptides had salt-enhancing effects: SH9 (8.93) > EM9 (3.77) > LF9
