Longitudinal studies evaluating the evolution of clinical, haematological, biochemical findings in young dogs exposed for the first time to multiple vector-borne pathogens have not been reported. With the objective of assessing the evolution of clinical, haematological and biochemical findings, these parameters were serially monitored in naturally infected dogs throughout a 1-year follow-up period. Young dogs, infected by vector-borne pathogens based on cytology or polymerase chain reaction, were examined clinically and blood samples were obtained at seven different follow-up time points. Dogs

Free-ranging mule deer (MD; Odocoileus hemionus) from Arizona and California were tested for evidence of infection with several tick-borne pathogens, including species of Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Babesia, and Borrelia. Of 125 mule deer tested from Arizona, 29 (23%) and 11 (9%) had antibodies reactive to E. chaffeensis and A. phagocytophilum by indirect immunofluorescent antibody testing, respectively; none of the six MD tested from California were seropositive. Using a commercial competitive ELISA kit, antibodies reactive to Anaplasma spp. were detected in 19 (15%) MD from Arizona and four of six

Vector Borne Diseases (VBDs) are considered emerging and re-emerging diseases that represent a global burden. The aim of this study was to explore and characterize vector-borne pathogens in different domestic animal hosts in Egypt. A total of 557 blood samples were collected from different animals using a convenience sampling strategy (203 dogs, 149 camels, 88 cattle, 26 buffaloes, 58 sheep and 33 goats). All samples were tested for multiple pathogens using quantitative PCR and standard PCR coupled with sequencing. We identified Theileria annulata and Babesia bigemina in cattle (15.9 and 1.1%,

Climate change is predicted to increase the transmission of many vector-borne pathogens, representing an increasing threat to a safe blood supply. In early 2011, Australia experienced catastrophic rainfall and flooding, coupled with increased arbovirus transmission. We used Ross River (RRV) and Barmah Forest (BFV) viruses as test cases to investigate the potential risk posed to Australia's blood supply after this period of increased rainfall . We estimated the risk of collecting an infected donation as one in 2,500-58,000 for RRV and one in 2,000-28,000 for BFV. Climate change may incrementall

Bartonella species are gram-negative bacteria that infect erythrocytes, endothelial cells and macrophages, often leading to persistent blood-borne infections. Because of the ability of various Bartonella species to reside within erythrocytes of a diverse number of animal hosts, there is substantial opportunity for the potential uptake of these blood-borne bacteria by a variety of arthropod vectors that feed on animals and people. Five Bartonella species are transmitted by lice, fleas or sandflies. However, Bartonella DNA has been detected or Bartonella spp. have been cultured from numerous oth

During the last few decades, efforts to increase the safety of blood and blood products have mainly focused on preventing the viral infectio … ensitive serological screening tests and the implementation of nucleic acid testing (NAT) for these blood-borne pathogens. These NAT assays have significantly shortened the window period between infection and the first detection of the infectious agent in the blood of an infected individual. BACKGROUND: Vector-borne pathogens are expanding in northern Europe as climate and host-vector communities change, shifting vector distributions, yet baseline data from boreal systems and early-life wildlife hosts remain scarce. Moose (Alces alces) represent a useful sentinel species for monitoring pathogen circulation at the wildlife-vector interface because they occupy diverse habitats and are widely distributed across boreal ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and phylogenetic location of Trypanosoma spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Bartonella spp. in moose calves d

Tick-borne bacterial and protozoal pathogens are a major threat to equine health worldwide. In Austria, studies on pathogens such as piroplasms, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia spp. in horses are scarce and do not cover the countrywide horse population. To address this, blood samples from horses without prior record of infection with tick-borne pathogens (n = 588) were tested for the presence of Theileria equi, Babesia caballi or A. phagocytophilum DNA by PCR and for specific antibodies against these pathogens and Borrelia burgdorferi with commercially available assays. While no DNA of

BACKGROUND: Rodents are recognized as major reservoirs of numerous zoonotic pathogens and are involved in the transmission and maintenance of infectious diseases. Furthermore, despite their importance, diseases transmitted by rodents have been neglected. To date, there have been limited epidemiological studies on rodents, and information regarding their involvement in infectious diseases in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is still scarce.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We investigated rodent-borne pathogens using nested PCR/RT-PCR from 156 rodents including 151 Apodemus agrarius and 5 Rattus nor

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While the risks of transfusion-transmitted human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, and human T-cell leukemia virus I/II continue to decrease, additional threats to transfusion safety are posed by emerging "new" infectious diseases.
RECENT FINDINGS: Following the introduction of nucleic acid testing for human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus, the American Red Cross estimates the risk of transfusion-transmitted human immunodeficiency virus to be 1:1,215,000 (per unit transfused) and 1:1,935,000 for transfusion-transmitted hepatitis C virus. Hepatitis B vi

Containing virus infections in hospital and other clinical contexts depends upon a clear understanding of how they may be transmitted. The routes of transmission, infectious doses, portals of virus entry and exit, intensity of virus excretion and stability of the virus in the environment are all important considerations. Although present infection control policies may be based on the best available evidence, the risks are in some instances still not well enough defined to be sure that all reasonable precautions are in place. One way of improving infection control policies is to study unexpecte

INTRODUCTION: Transfusion is a critical life-saving intervention, but the safety of the blood supply remains a major public health concern, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, due to the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs). This study aimed to determine the burden and correlates of bloodborne pathogens among blood donors in Muchinga Province, Zambia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using records from 2,667 blood donors at the Chinsali General Hospital Blood Bank between January and December 2021. Data on demographic characteristics, donation type, and ABO/Rhesus b

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-viral bloodborne diseases are a group of infections that are a public health problem worldwide. The incidence of diseases such as brucellosis and syphilis is increasing in the Americas and Europe. Chagas disease is an endemic problem in Latin America, the United States and Europe. This study aims to determine the prevalence of non-viral bloodborne diseases in blood donors and to discuss some issues related to federal regulations for the control and prevention of these infectious diseases in Mexico.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in t

Dogs serve as hosts for a great number of parasites, which may affect their health and wellbeing. This study aimed to observe tick borne pathogens in dogs from Palestine including Hepatozoon canis and Babesia species. The prevalence of both H. canis and Babesia species infections in apparently healthy dogs, from ten districts of the West Bank was surveyed. DNA was extracted from blood samples obtained from dogs (n = 362) and ticks (n = 213) collected from dogs (n = 77). A primer set that amplifies a partial sequence of the Babesia and Hepatozoon 18S rRNA gene was used for PCR and the DNA seque

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood donor screening reduces the infectious hazards related to blood transfusion, but the range of agents to be screened for is debatable. In 1993, the screening of all blood donations for Human T-Cell Lymphotropic virus (HTLV) was introduced in The Netherlands. We analysed the outcome and costs of HTLV donor screening.
METHODS: For the years 2001-2010, the number of HTLV infections among new and regular donors was used to estimate the prevented number of HTLV-infected donors in the donor pool and the amount of morbidity prevented among recipients.
RESULTS: Human
