Low-Dose Computed Tomography Scan Features Are Associated With Annual Risk of Hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate whether lung cancer screening low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) can be used to identify features associated with increased risk of hospitalization during the subsequent year. METHODS: Patients who underwent lung cancer screening between 2015 and 2020 with at least 1-year follow-up were identified. Patient charts were examined and LDCT scans were analyzed using body segmentation software to identify characteristics potentially associated with frailty and injury. Hospitalization was defined as an admission >48 hours within 1 year of t

Taming nonlinear energy diffusion: The case of time-crystal energy condensates.

We study a bulk-driven nonlinear variant of the Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti model of stochastic energy diffusion in which local collisions are biased to induce a net energy flow, resembling the effect of an external field. Starting from the microscopic master equation, we derive the hydrodynamic description of the driven system via a local equilibrium approximation, obtaining explicit expressions for the energy current and the associated diffusivity and mobility transport coefficients, which are nonlinear functions of the local energy density. We test our findings in kinetic Monte Carlo simulati

Programmable time crystals from higher-order packing fields.

Time crystals are many-body systems that spontaneously break time-translation symmetry, and thus exhibit long-range spatiotemporal order and robust periodic motion. Recent results have shown that coupling an external packing field to density fluctuations in driven diffusive fluids can trigger a transition to a time-crystal phase. Here, we exploit this mechanism to engineer and control on-demand programmable continuous time crystals characterized by an arbitrary number of rotating condensates, which can be further enhanced with higher-order modes. We elucidate the underlying critical point, as

Successful Endoscopic Vacuum Therapy for a Postoperative Esophagogastric Fistula Following Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Case Report.

Esophagogastric fistulas are a rare but serious complication after sleeve gastrectomy. Their management remains a clinical challenge, especially when conventional endoscopic approaches, such as stent placement, fail. We report the case of a 49-year-old female with a history of hypothyroidism, major depressive disorder, body mass index greater than 50 kg/m², significant smoking history, and obstructive sleep apnea, who developed acute abdominal pain and bleeding after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. She was referred to our institution in hypovolemic shock and underwent exploratory laparotomy w

Detection of drug-induced conformational change of a transmembrane protein in lipid bilayers using site-directed spin labeling.

As a target of antiviral drugs, the influenza A M2 protein has been the focus of numerous structural studies and has been extensively explored as a model ion channel. In this study, we capitalize on the expanding body of high-resolution structural data available for the M2 protein to design and interpret site-directed spin-labeling electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments on drug-induced conformational changes of the M2 protein embedded in lipid bilayers. We obtained data in the presence of adamantane drugs for two different M2 constructs (M2TM 22-46 and M2TMC 23-60). M2TM pept

Factors associated with wound complications in women with obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS).

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine factors associated with perineal wound complications in women with obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS). STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review of women who sustained an OASIS from Nov. 2, 2005, through March 1, 2010, was performed. RESULTS: In all, 1629 women sustained an OASIS; 909 had follow-up data. Wound complications (infection, breakdown, packing, operative intervention, secondary repair) occurred in 7.3% (n = 66) of patients. Smoking (odds ratio [OR], 4.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4-12.2; P = .01), increasing body mass index (OR, 1.0

Understanding beliefs, preferences and actions amongst potential body donors.

Body donation is a prosocial act providing a unique learning experience to students, ultimately impacting on patient care and science. With an increasing number of training professionals, there is an increasing need for body donors, yet little is understood about donors' beliefs and preferences. A four-center study aimed to understand donors' perceptions, 843 responses highlighted a significant relationship between completing a body donor consent form and being both an organ donor and having ever donated blood (p < 0.01). In exploring donor intentions, 69% had been considering donation for few

Penetrating head injury from angle grinder: A cautionary tale.

Penetrating cranial injury is a potentially life-threatening condition. Injuries resulting from the use of angle grinders are numerous and cause high-velocity penetrating cranial injuries. We present a series of two penetrating head injuries associated with improper use of angle grinder, which resulted in shattering of disc into high velocity missiles with reference to management and prevention. One of those hit on the forehead of the operator and the other on the occipital region of the co-worker at a distance of five meters. The pathophysiological consequence of penetrating head injuries dep

Carotid body tumor: an incidental finding in older ranch mink.

Carotid body tumors were found incidentally at necropsy in 15 ranch mink (Mustela vision), mostly royal pastels, kept for studies on slow viral diseases. The mink, five males and ten females, were 77 to 135 months old (mean age 107 months). Loosely or firmly attached at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, and 11 larger tumors were smooth-surfaced, discrete, pale brown, globoid masses that varied from 2.5 to 16 mm in diameter. Four tumors of microscopic size occurred in otherwise normal-looking carotid bodies. All were composed of densely packed polygonal cells disposed in sheets and

Cigarette smoking associates with body weight and muscle mass of patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a cross-sectional, observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with altered metabolism leading to muscle wasting. In the general population, cigarette smoking is known to affect body composition by reducing fat and inhibiting muscle synthesis. Even though smoking has been implicated in the pathophysiology and progression of RA, its possible effects on body composition of such patients have not been studied. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify potential associations of smoking with body weight and composition of RA patients. METHODS: A total of 392 patients (290 females) with RA were assessed

Ceramic-Processing Perspectives on Colloidal CIGS and CZTSSe Thin-Film Solar Absorbers: Green-Body Formation, Reactive Chalcogenization, and Defect Engineering.

Colloidal processing provides a scalable non-vacuum route for fabricating CIGS and CZTSSe thin-film absorbers, but nanoparticle-derived films should be treated as constrained particulate green bodies rather than as simple chemically deposited semiconductor layers. This review reorganizes colloidal chalcogenide photovoltaics using ceramic-processing concepts: ink dispersion, green-body packing, capillary drying stress, ligand burnout, constrained shrinkage, reactive chalcogenization, transient liquid-assisted coarsening, secondary-phase control, defect chemistry, and interface reactions. The ce

Dynamic Response of Concentrated Electrolytes to Chirp Signals.

Electrolytes, chirp signals, Brownian dynamics, conductivity, Maxwell-Wagner relaxation This study investigates the dynamic response of electrolyte/macroion solutions to time-varying electric fields, which is vital for applications from water desalination to neuromorphic computing and sensor technologies. Using large-scale Brownian dynamics simulations coupled with Poisson's equation, we examined the frequency-dependent conductivity of symmetric and binary electrolytes/nanoparticles across various concentrations. We reveal a comprehensive picture of charge transport mechanisms by employing chi

3D Muscle Architecture of the Tongue of the White-bellied Pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis) Reveals a Muscular Hydrostat.

The tongues of pangolins are among the more derived of other mammalian ant-eating specialists, extending nearly a body length to capture food. Pangolins pack portions of their hyolingual apparatus in their thoracoabdominal cavity. These muscles are responsible for protruding, retracting, and bracing the tongue through a large range of motion akin to that of muscular hydrostats. Using DiceCT and 3D muscle architectural modeling of a cadaveric Phataginus tricuspis (White-bellied pangolin), we show how the arrangement of muscle fascicles in a section of the thoracoabdominal portion of the tongue

Atlanto-axial langerhans cell histiocytosis in a child presented as torticollis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition mostly seen in children and adolescents. Eosinophilic granuloma (EG) is one of its three clinical entities and is considered as a benign osteolytic lesion. Many reports of patients with spine histiocytosis are well documented in the literature but it is not the case of atlantoaxial localization. We report here a new observation of atlantoaxial LCH in a 4-year-old boy revealed by persistent torticollis. He was successfully treated with systemic chemotherapy and surgery. Inter-body fusion packed by autologous iliac bone was performed with r

Rhinoliths: Analysis of 24 Interesting Forgotten Foreign Body Cases.

Rhinoliths are petrified masses formed by accumulation of endogenous or exogenous salts around a nidus. Although rarely formed by the body, the most common cause is foreign bodies forgotten in the nose at childhood. Rhinoliths are rare and have been reported as a single case report in the literature. In this study, 24 different and different cases will be analyzed. Twenty-four interesting patients who were operated for rhinolith in the otorhinolaryngology clinic between 2014 and 2019 and were not seen in the literature before were analyzed retrospectively. The characteristics of these patients

Malignant hyperthermia during general anesthesia for a surgery of idiopathic scoliosis: A case report.

Malignant hyperthermia is a potentially fatal hypermetabolic syndrome characterized by skeletal muscle rigidity and hyperpyrexia. We had an 11-year-old female presented for a surgery for idiopathic scoliosis of the thoracic vertebra. Generalized muscle rigidity and tachycardia were revealed 1 hour 35 minutes after isoflurane administration. Then the body temperature was risen to 43degrees C within 10 minutes and the arterial blood gas analysis showed a severe respiratory and metabolic acidosis. Under the suspicion of malignant hyperthermia, the patient was treated by discontinuing all anesthet
