An effective surgical technique for the excision of first branchial cleft fistula: make-inside-exposed method by tract incision.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of make-inside-exposed method by tract incision to remove the first branchial cleft fistula, while avoiding injury to the facial nerve and completely excising the fistula. Fifteen patients who underwent the make-inside-exposed method by tract incision for excision of the first branchial cleft anomalies were reviewed. Pre-auricular fistulas or sinuses occurred in nine of them, and post-auricular fistulas occurred in six cases. The symptoms of these patients, post-operative complications including facial nerve paralysis and recurrence

Functional characterization of tissue-specific enhancers in the DLX5/6 locus.

Disruption of distaless homeobox 5 and 6 (Dlx5/6) in mice results in brain, craniofacial, genital, ear and limb defects. In humans, chromosomal aberrations in the DLX5/6 region, some of which do not encompass DLX5/6, are associated with split hand/foot malformation 1 (SHFM1) as well as intellectual disability, craniofacial anomalies and hearing loss, suggesting that the disruption of DLX5/6 regulatory elements could lead to these abnormalities. Here, we characterized enhancers in the DLX5/6 locus whose tissue-specific expression and genomic location along with previously characterized enhancer

Neurofilament expression in vagal neural crest-derived precursors of enteric neurons.

In order to gain insight into the potential role of the enteric microenvironment in the neuronal determination of the neural crest-derived precursor cells of enteric neurons, an attempt was made to ascertain when and where along the migratory route of these cells that they first express neuronal properties. The immunocytochemical detection of the 160-kDa component of the triplet of the chick neurofilament peptides served as a neuronal marker. In addition, neurogenic potential was assessed by growing explants of tissue suspected of containing presumptive neuroblasts in culture or as grafts on t

Severe fetal manifestation of hemifacial microsomia.

Hemifacial microsomia is a heterogenous complex lesion including predominantly unilateral face and head malformations mainly in the region of the first and second branchial arch, vertebral anomalies and varying accompanying malformations. A severe manifestation of this condition is demonstrated in a fetus by means of 5 mm thick sections of the whole head. Abortion had been induced because extreme microcephaly simulated fetal anencephaly in prenatal ultrasound examination. Alpha-Fetoprotein values were normal.

Ectopic Warthin's Tumour Masquerading As Infected Branchial Cyst.

Salivary gland tumours are relatively uncommon but they present globally regardless of age. Most of these tumours are benign and involve the parotid gland. Though strictly confined to the parotid gland, Warthin's tumours can exceptionally present at an ectopic site of head and neck. Of particular significance is its striking similarity with a lymph node, an inclusion cyst, branchial cyst or a malignant mass, especially when it presents in the upper cervical region.

Anastomosis between the internal carotid and vertebral artery in the neck.

We report a case of anastomosis between the internal carotid and vertebral a. in the cervical region. This anatomic variation is due to incomplete migration during embryogenesis of the branchial aa., collaterals of the dorsal aorta, towards the ventral aorta. It does not involve persistence of a type I proatlantal a., as described by Lasjaunias. Such anastomoses must be recognised since they may modify surgical tactics in the context of endarterectomy for carotid stenosis.

De novo direct duplication of 15q15-->q24 in a newborn boy with mild manifestations.

Duplication of distal 15q results in a recognizable clinical phenotype. We report here on a 25-day-old boy with a de novo interstitial duplication of chromosome region 15q15-q24. The manifestations in this patient are milder than those of previously described patients and include minor facial anomalies, velopharyngeal insufficiency, branchial cleft cyst, and hydronephrosis. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using a chromosome 15 painting probe confirmed that the extra material is of chromosome 15 origin. Further analysis with the SNRPN probe demonstrated that the duplication is telomer

Abnormalities in pharyngeal arch-derived structures in SATB2-associated syndrome.

SATB2-associated syndrome (SAS, glass syndrome, OMIM#612313) is a neurodevelopmental autosomal dominant disorder with frequent craniofacial abnormalities including palatal and dental anomalies. To assess the role of Satb2 in craniofacial development, we analyzed mutant mice at different stages of development. Here, we show that Satb2 is broadly expressed in early embryonic mouse development including the mesenchyme of the second and third arches. Satb2-/- mutant mice exhibit microglossia, a shortened lower jaw, smaller trigeminal ganglia, and larger thyroids. We correlate these findings with t

Antifungal triazole derivative triadimefon induces ectopic maxillary cartilage by altering the morphogenesis of the first branchial arch.

BACKGROUND: The triazole derivative, triadimefon (FON), induces branchial arch abnormalities in post-implantation rat embryos cultured in vitro, and cranio-facial malformations in mouse fetuses. Ectopic maxillary cartilage has been also described as a typical FON-related malformation. This work studies the morphogenesis of the ectopic cartilage in rat embryos and fetuses exposed in vivo to FON during the early postimplantation period. METHODS: Pregnant rats were treated with 0, 250, and 500 mg/kg FON on Day 9.5 of pregnancy (D9.5) and sacrificed at term (D20), during the early fetal period (D

Fibronectin and Integrin α5 play overlapping and independent roles in regulating the development of pharyngeal endoderm and cartilage.

Craniofacial skeletal elements are derived from cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs), which migrate along discrete paths and populate distinct pharyngeal arches, structures that are separated by the neighboring endodermal pouches (EPs). Interactions between the CNCCs and the endoderm are critical for proper craniofacial development. In zebrafish, integrin α5 (Itga5) functions in the endoderm to regulate formation of specifically the first EP (EP1) and the development of the hyoid cartilage. Here we show that fibronectin (Fn), a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), is also required

PAX Genes in Cardiovascular Development.

The mammalian heart is a four-chambered organ with systemic and pulmonary circulations to deliver oxygenated blood to the body, and a tightly regulated genetic network exists to shape normal development of the heart and its associated major arteries. A key process during cardiovascular morphogenesis is the septation of the outflow tract which initially forms as a single vessel before separating into the aorta and pulmonary trunk. The outflow tract connects to the aortic arch arteries which are derived from the pharyngeal arch arteries. Congenital heart defects are a major cause of death and mo

Isolated First Branchial Cleft Anomalies of the External Auditory Canal.

BACKGROUND Branchial cleft anomalies are congenital aberrations of the first to fourth pharyngeal pouches. First branchial cleft anomalies are classified into 2 subtypes according to anatomical and histological features. Their diagnosis can be difficult and depends on radiological and histological findings. In contrast, the required treatment is surgical removal, owing to the high risk of infection or malignancy. This case report introduces a first branchial cleft anomaly in an older woman with exclusive involvement of the external auditory canal (EAC). CASE REPORT This case report introduces

Feasibility of same day surgery for pediatric second branchial cleft anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: The risk of expansile hematoma and airway compromise following neck surgery have been used to validate overnight observation. We investigated the outcomes of pediatric patients undergoing a removal of second branchial cleft anomalies (BCA) via either same day surgery or overnight observation. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients undergoing second BCA removal between January 1, 2008 to January 1, 2019 was performed. 40 cases were identified for review. Bivariate analyses were performed to determine predictive factors for overnight admission as well as associations between ove

Fish mouths as engineering structures for vortical cross-step filtration.

Suspension-feeding fishes such as goldfish and whale sharks retain prey without clogging their oral filters, whereas clogging is a major expense in industrial crossflow filtration of beer, dairy foods and biotechnology products. Fishes' abilities to retain particles that are smaller than the pore size of the gill-raker filter, including extraction of particles despite large holes in the filter, also remain unexplained. Here we show that unexplored combinations of engineering structures (backward-facing steps forming d-type ribs on the porous surface of a cone) cause fluid dynamic phenomena dis

The role of foxi family transcription factors in the development of the ear and jaw.

The mammalian outer, middle, and inner ears have different embryonic origins and evolved at different times in the vertebrate lineage. The outer ear is derived from first and second branchial arch ectoderm and mesoderm, the middle ear ossicles are derived from neural crest mesenchymal cells that invade the first and second branchial arches, whereas the inner ear and its associated vestibule-acoustic (VIIIth) ganglion are derived from the otic placode. In this chapter, we discuss recent findings in the development of these structures and describe the contributions of members of a Forkhead trans
