BACKGROUND: Although the etiology of gross cystic disease of the breast is unknown, elevated cyst concentrations of potassium (K+) (> 60 mM/L) may be related to symptoms. The purpose of this study was to clarify the mechanism(s) of K+ accumulation in breast cysts.
METHODS: We assayed cyst fluids for factors known to exert effects on K+ transport, namely, endogenous digitalis-like inhibitors of Na+,K(+)-ATPase (NKA) and the neuropeptides gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), calcitonin (CT), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP).
RESULTS: Cyst fluid K+ was directly correlated with cyst volume…

The high concentration of estriol-3-sulfate (E3-3S) in human breast cyst fluid has been confirmed in 14 women with multiple cysts. The concentrations of E3-3S found in individual cysts drained within a short time span from the same patient were variable, the ratios ranging from unity to 40. After the iv administration of [14C]estriol or [3H]E3-3S, only minor accumulation of either isotope was detected in the cyst fluids aspirated 6.5-30 h later. Since surprisingly small amounts of isotopes were found in blood, the metabolism of [3H]E3-3S was studied in 2 normal women. The test compound was inj…

We evaluated the presence and distribution of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) in breast cyst fluid (BCF), and its relationship with intracystic epidermal growth factor (EGF). EGF and TGF-beta 1 were determined by radioimmunoassay on 47 BCFs (27 of the Na+/K+ < 3 type and 20 of the Na+/K+ > 3 type). As expected, EGF levels were inversely correlated with the Na+/K+ ratio, and were consequently higher in Na+/K+ < 3 cysts as compared with Na+/K+ > 3 cysts, (p < 0.005). By contrast, TGF-beta 1 levels were directly correlated with the Na+/K+ ratio (p < 0.01), being higher in Na+/K+ > …

Women who have palpable breast cysts with intracystic Na/K > 3 may have a lower risk of developing breast cancer than those with intracystic Na/K < 3. In this study significantly higher concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I, IGF-II) and transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-beta2) were found in the Na/K > 3 sub-group. No difference was found in transforming-growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta1) levels between the two sub-groups of breast cysts. A positive correlation was obtained for IGFBP-3 and TGF-beta1 in the Na/ K …

In order to address the question of whether biological measurements might identify women with benign breast disease (BBD) at particular risk for breast cancer, analyses were performed on cyst fluids aspirated from patients presenting with palpable breast cysts. Electrolyte profiles showed that cyst fluids may be divided into major subpopulations which differ in terms of histological appearance of cyst lining epithelium, pattern of cyst presentation, and levels of other fluid constituents such as androgen conjugates and epidermal growth factor. Analysis of cyst fluids from 18 patients who subse…

Opioid peptides have a variety of pathophysiologic actions, playing a novel important role in human breast cancer. The expression of beta-endorphin was studied in 84 human breast cyst fluids from gross cystic breast disease-affected patients. The concentration of beta-endorphin in pooled breast cyst fluids was over four-fold higher than in respective plasma with a significant increase in the mean value of the 'metabolically active' apocrine cysts when compared with flattened cysts (P < 0.001). The higher levels of Type I cyst suggest de novo mammary synthesis of endogenous opioid peptides and …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hydatid cyst is the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cyst fluid, cyst membrane and Protoscolices, contain a complex mixture of antigens that can induce immune responses in the host. Anti-cancer properties of Protoscolices and hydatid cyst fluid has been shown. In order to identify antigens of hydatid cyst fluid that have anti-cancer effect, in this study production of monoclonal antibodies against one of the hydatid cyst fluid band (40KDa) has been investigated. There are many published patents about applications of monoclonal antibodies.

OBJECTIVE: To describe an approach to managing women who present with palpable breast lumps.
QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: Databases were searched from 1990 to 1998 using the search terms breast lumps, breast diseases, and breast cysts. Bibliographies of the articles obtained were searched for further relevant titles. Most evidence on management of breast cysts was obtained from cohort studies. Evidence on family physicians' approach to managing breast lumps is based on a review of the 1998 Canadian consensus guidelines and a review of a 1998 consensus guideline by 12 University of Toronto surgical on…

From preclimacteric women (n = 10, 45-50 years of age) with gross cystic breast disease, levels of beta-endorphin, estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, cortisol and prolactin were assayed radiochemically in the breast cyst fluid and in plasma. The beta-endorphin concentration (fmol/ml) was increased more than fourfold in the breast cyst fluid (17.6 +/- 4.6 SEM) than in plasma (4.2 +/- 0.5 SEM). In the breast cyst fluid, estradiol was increased 41-fold (1738.2 +/- 350.5 SEM pg/ml), and progesterone 47-fold (65.47 +/- 8.25 SEM n…

Zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein (ZnGP) was measured in human breast microcysts, breast secretions, breast cyst fluid and serum. Detectable amounts of ZnGP were found in all fluids but the highest levels were found in microcysts. Apocrine macrocysts had a higher ZnGP level than flattened macrocysts. In both cysts and secretions levels of ZnGP correlated with those of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate. Levels were significantly higher in cyst fluids from women who developed further cysts during follow-up compared with those in fluid from women who did not. Concentrations of ZnGP in serum from breast can…

The fibro-cystic disease is very common disease. Hormonal factors: hyperestrogenemia, luteal deficiency, dysprolactinemia are inconstant. They are neither necessary nor sufficient to induce the cystic disease. The relations GCD (gross cystic disease) with breast cancer remain the fundamental problem. Although the cyst itself only exceptionally degenerates into cancer, the presence of macrocystic disease multiplies by 3 to 4 the risk of cancer. A lot of interesting examinations were performed on cyst fluids aspirated from patients to identify women with benign breast disease and particular risk

BACKGROUND: Formation of cysts in the human female breast remains a common clinical problem with few pathogenic theories suggested, and none proven.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We studied the immunohistochemical distribution of a structural protein, fodrin (a nonerythroid spectrin) within benign conditions of the breast.
RESULTS: Whereas normal breast epithelium expressed fodrin, all breast cysts were consistently negative for fodrin expression. Both larger, tension cysts as well as the smaller microcysts seen in a special pattern of lobular atrophy were uniformly negative.
CONCLUSIONS: Lack of fo…

BACKGROUND: Intracystic papillary carcinoma (IPC) is defined as cancer that develops from the wall of a cyst in the breast. As breast cancer in men accounts for only 1% of all breast cancers, male IPC is an extremely rare form of the disease. The present case report examines IPC in a man, along with an in-depth literature discussion.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old Japanese man noticed a mass in the right breast and sought medical attention. An elastic and soft neoplastic 3-cm lesion was palpated in the right papilla. As a 1-cm solid tumor with a gradual rise from the cyst wall was confirmed

Cystic breast masses are very common in female patients attending breast clinics. Most of them are benign and managed by simple aspiration. We reviewed histology records for the last 12 years to find patients with cystic breast carcinomas and to evaluate special clinical signs that may help to identify patients with this rare entity. Eighteen patients with cystic breast carcinomas were found among 1510 new breast cancer patients (1.19%) who were seen at our Breast Unit during this period. Ten had intracystic papillary carcinoma (0.66% of all breast cancers), seven had cystic degeneration of du

The risk of developing breast cancer is higher in women presenting gross cystic disease (cysts > 3 mm in diameter) of the breast with intracystic K+/Na+ > 3 as compared with K+/Na+ < 3. The present study reports the levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 (IL-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the breast cyst fluid of women with gross cystic disease and analyses the relationship between the intracystic concentration of these cytokines, sex steroid hormones, and the K+/Na+ ratio. The concentration of these cytokines, estradiol, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate…

Studies about the relationship between gross cysts and risk of subsequent carcinoma of the breast should be interpreted with caution. When the study material is limited to microscopic review of benign biopsy specimens, there is considerable chance of misclassification of cases both of those with and of those without gross cysts. Moreover, statistical analyses based on internal comparisons of such data tend to separate the influence of gross cysts from that of any associated proliferative disease process. Thus, while they may provide information about whether or not gross cysts identified under

BACKGROUND Epidermal inclusion cysts rarely develop in the breast. The cysts that do develop within the breast typically present as cutaneous or subcutaneous cysts. They more rarely present in a subareolar location or in a ruptured state. Thus far, 5 cases of ruptured epidermal inclusion cysts in subareolar locations have been reported in the English literature. Furthermore, clinical presentation of nipple discharge is rare in epidermal inclusion cysts of the breast; only 4 such cases has been reported. CASE REPORT A 58-year-old female presented with a 1-month history of bloody discharge from
