Gastric bronchogenic cyst presenting as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is congenital abnormality of the tracheobronchial bud derived from the primitive foregut which is predominantly found in the mediastinum. Surgery remains the most common treatment when malignancy is suspected, or when there are presenting. Only infrequently, is BC located at an extrathoracic site. Although rarely located in the stomach, BC should be considered as a differential diagnosis of gastric neoplasm. For these cases, surgery remains a common choice. Minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle biopsy aspiration (EUS-FNA) and…

Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst mimicking hydatid liver: a case report.

Bronchogenic cysts frequently occur in the mediastinum. They may be rarely encountered in the abdomen and retroperitoneum. Bronchogenic cysts can in fact mimic hydatid cysts. We report a case of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst below the right hemidiaphragm mimicking a hydatid cyst of the liver in a 30-year-old female.

Intralobar pulmonary sequestration associated with bronchogenic cyst in adult.

Pulmonary sequestration and mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are rare but well known to thoracic surgeons. However, their association is exceptional. We report such a case in a young adult. The common origin of these 2 malformations is discussed.

Mediastinal bronchogenic cyst presenting with dysphagia and back pain.

The presentation of the bronchogenic cyst is variable, making pre-operative diagnosis difficult. Majority of them are either asymptomatic or discovered incidentally. The most common presenting symptoms are cough, fever and dyspnea. We discuss the case of a large bronchogenic cyst in the posterior mediastinum causing oesophageal compression and impinging on the left atrium. The patient presented with dysphagia and back pain and was extensively investigated by various physicians before being diagnosed as having bronchogenic cyst. We concluded that the backache was due to stretching of nerves in …

Paravertebral bronchogenic cyst diagnosed by computed tomography-guided biopsy.

Bronchogenic cysts are lesions that are an anomaly of congenital development. Although most are found in the mediastinum, bronchogenic cysts can be found in many different anatomical positions in the body and can have multiple presentations. These lesions can be asymptomatic and found incidentally, or they can present with specific symptoms. Bronchogenic cysts can be diagnosed on multiple radiographic modalities including conventional radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Most are treated conservatively but the possibility of infection or malignant transformation ha…

Congenital intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst in the neonate--perinatal management.

Approximately 50% of all congenital lung malformations are pulmonary and mediastinal bronchogenic cysts (BC). Therefore, their diagnosis and management is of clinical importance. Usually asymptomatic in the first months of life, bronchogenic cysts are frequently clinically inapparent even adulthood. Early diagnosis and elective surgery can prevent late complications such as pneumothorax, pulmonary hypertension, and recurrent infections; prognosis after surgery is excellent. If mediastinal shifting is present, fetal thoracocentesis is indicated to prevent cardiovascular insufficiency. We report…

Cutaneous bronchogenic cyst: delineation of a poorly recognized lesion.

Bronchogenic cyst is a benign congenital developmental abnormality of the embryonic foregut. The most common extrapulmonary location of these lesions is the mediastinum. Over 50 cases of cutaneous bronchogenic cyst were reported in the English literature. Nevertheless, it is poorly recognized by clinicians and is sometimes confused with branchial cyst. In almost all cases the diagnosis is established by histopathologic examination. We report an unusual clinical presentation of bronchogenic cyst in a 4-year-old girl and review the literature. This lesion is four times more common in males than …

[Mediastinal esophago-bronchogenic cyst presenting as a single mass].

An abnormal shadow was found on a chest X-ray film of a 42-year-old man. The mass was 17 x 12 x 11 cm, smooth, round, homogeneous, and was s … esophageal wall and the smaller part was bronchogenic. The final diagnosis was mediastinal esophago-bronchogenic cyst. In previously reported cases, two cystic masses were connected by a canal. The findings in this case support the theory by Yoshii that this type of cyst originates from the diverticulum of the foregut near the lung bud.

A 32-year-old woman without preceding illness or significant cardiovascular risk factors was admitted to hospital because of a syncope after … two findings was assumed and quickly undertaken surgical intervention revealed an intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst which, presumably as a result of its size and location, had pressed on the main stem of the left coronary artery and caused the stenosis of its ostium. The cyst was completely resected and angioplasty of the coronary artery ostium was performed to e …

[Mediastinal bronchogenic cyst associated with a multiple malformation syndrome].

The authors report a case of a patient presenting with a bronchogenic mediastinal cyst, which presented as a super-infection of the cyst. The cyst was associated with malformation of the cervical vertebra, cardiovascular abnormalities and congenital deafness, placing this in the group of rare complex polymalformation syndrome with Klippel-Feil Syndrome. The authors also stress the value of computed tomography, and above all of nuclear magnetic resonance in the analysis of mediastinal tumours and in particular, of bronchogenic cysts.

CT and MRI characteristics for differentiating mediastinal Müllerian cysts from bronchogenic cysts.

AIM: To evaluate how computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics can be used to differentiate immunohistochemically confirmed mediastinal Müllerian cysts (MMCs) from bronchogenic cysts (BCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with histopathologically and immunohistochemically confirmed mediastinal cysts (four with MMCs and 12 with BCs) were included in this study. CT and MRI images were reviewed retrospectively and the location, size, CT attenuation, and MRI signal intensity of the two pathologies were compared. RESULTS: On review of CT images, cysts c…

Retroperitoneal Bronchogenic Cyst: A Rare Diagnosis of a Retroperitoneal Mass.

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are rare clinical entities caused by the abnormal budding of the tracheobronchial tree during embryogenesis. This foregut anomaly is usually found in the thorax. Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts (RBCs) are extremely uncommon and usually located near the left adrenal gland. A definitive diagnosis can only be reached with surgical resection and histopathology. We report the case of a 52-year-old female with an RBC found incidentally on CT imaging and managed with surgical resection. Despite the rarity of RBCs, they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of …

Midline cervical bronchogenic cyst: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are congenital anomalies typically located in the mediastinum or lung, with ectopic presentations in the neck being exceptionally rare. The potential for compressive symptoms and malignant transformation underscores the need for precise surgical resection. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old female presented with a self-palpable cervical mass and notable dysphagia. Medical imaging revealed a well-defined cystic lesion in the anterior cervical region. DIAGNOSES: The histopathological analysis post-resection confirmed a bronchogenic cyst lined by ciliated column…

Suprasternal Bronchogenic Cyst Masquerading as Thyroid Swelling: A Case Report.

Abnormal foregut budding during early embryonic development results in bronchogenic cysts, which are uncommon congenital anomalies that usually develop along the tracheobronchial tree, in the mediastinum, or inside the lung parenchyma. Bronchogenic cysts, which are lined with respiratory epithelium and filled with fluid or mucus, are frequently asymptomatic but might develop compressive symptoms or recurrent infections if they increase, get infected, or occasionally rupture. Imaging is usually used to make the diagnosis; magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography can show a well-defined…

Repeated misdiagnosis of small intestine bronchogenic cyst: a case report.

Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital malformations of the respiratory system. These cysts can be categorized as intrapulmonary, mediastinal, or ectopic. Ectopic bronchogenic cysts, which lack distinctive clinical and imaging features, are particularly challenging to diagnose. This study presents a 48-year-old woman having a small intestinal bronchogenic cyst. She was repeatedly misdiagnosed as having an ovarian chocolate cyst or a cystic mass of bladder origin three years ago. However, no cyst was found during the operation. Half a year prior to presenting at our hospital, the patient de…

Bronchogenic cyst: a rare cause of palpitations and atrial fibrillation.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital lesions found primarily in the mediastinum. Most patients are asymptomatic and can be treated with minimally invasive resection. We present a case of a middle-aged patient who presented to a district general hospital with palpitations and shortness of breath. She underwent a computerised tomographic pulmonary angiogram that showed a likely bronchogenic cyst and was subsequently transferred to our hospital. She developed atrial fibrillation during admission requiring therapy with beta-blockers and digoxin. Cardiac MRI revealed a large cyst posterior to the…
