Regression of Peritubular Capillaries Coincides with Angiogenesis and Renal Cyst Growth in Experimental Polycystic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The natural history of the renal microvasculature changes in PKD is not known. The aim of this study was to test the hypothe … in part mediated by the suppression of angiogenesis. RESULTS: In LPK rats, the loss of peritubular capillaries occurred in early-stage disease and paralleled cyst formation whereas in jck mice it was delayed to the mid stage. In both models, vasa recta were displaced by growing cysts and regressed in LPK rats with disease progression but lengthened in jck mi …

Increased number of mitochondria in capillaries distributed in stroke-like lesions of two patients with MELAS.

We investigated two autopsy cases of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) using immunoh … tion was noted within the SLLs, particularly in the acute phase. Endothelial cells of proliferating capillaries were strongly positive for TOMM20. In the cortex outside the SLLs, microvessels displayed only a fine granular immunoreactivity, as is seen in the controls. Although smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells in pial arteries and arterioles were also …

Estimation of Volume of Stria Vascularis and the Length of Its Capillaries in the Human Cochlea.

BACKGROUND: The stria vascularis (SV) is a vascularized epithelium that secretes endolymph and is located on the lateral wall of the membranous cochlea. The capillaries of SV directly influence the composition of the endolymph and hence the generation of impulses by the hair-cells that are auditory receptors and thus affect hearing. Therefore, the real morphology of the SV would be very important for understanding the hearing system. There are few reliable reports of the morphology of the human SV. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: In this research, we have estimated the volume of the SV and total length …

Somatostatin and CXCR4 chemokine receptor expression in hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinomas: tumor capillaries as promising targets.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular (HCC) and cholangiocellular carcinomas (CCC) display an exceptionally poor prognosis. Especially for advanced dis … n 30% and 11% of the tumors, respectively. Most notably, CXCR4 was intensely expressed on the tumor capillaries in about 50% of the HCCs and CCCs. CXCR4 expression on tumor vessels was associated with poor patient outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: CCC, but not HCC, may be suitable for SSTR-based treatments. Because of the predominant expression of SSTR1, pan-somatostat …

Microcrystallization of a Solution-Processable Organic Semiconductor in Capillaries for High-Performance Ambipolar Field-Effect Transistors.

We report on the use of microcrystallization in capillaries to fabricate patterned crystalline microstructures of the low-bandgap ambipolar quinoidal quaterthiophene derivative (QQT(CN)4) from a chloroform solution. Aligned needle-shaped QQT(CN)4 crystals were formed in thin film microstructures using either open- or closed- capillaries made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Their charge transport properties were evaluated in a bottom-gate top-contact transistor configuration. Hole and electron mobilities were found to be as high as 0.17 and 0.083 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), respectively, approaching the…

Flow behavior of erythrocytes in microvessels and glass capillaries: effects of erythrocyte deformation and erythrocyte aggregation.

Flow behavior of erythrocytes in microvessels and glass capillaries with an inner diameter of 10-50 microns was compared in relation to erythrocyte deformation and erythrocyte aggregation. This study was focused on the formation of a marginal cell-free layer, and the thickness was determined using an image processor. Human erythrocytes were perfused through a part of microvascular networks isolated from rabbit mesentery and through glass capillaries. Erythrocyte deformability was modified by treating erythrocytes with diamide, diazene-dicarboxylic acid bis[N,N-dimethylamide], and erythrocyte a…

A rapid transport route between the epidural space and the intraneural capillaries of the nerve roots.

STUDY DESIGN: The possibility of epidurally applied substances reaching the intraneural capillaries of the spinal nerve roots and cauda equina was assessed in the pig sacrococcygeal spine. METHODS: The presence of Evans blue-labelled albumin in intraneural capillaries after epidural application for 1, 10, or 30 minutes was studied with fluorescence microscopy. Ink angiography was used to determine whether there were any direct communicating vessels between the epidural vein plexus and the intraneural capillaries. RESULTS: Evans blue-labelled albumin was present in the intraneural capillaries…

Fast and high resolution analysis of human serum transferrin by high performance isoelectric focusing in capillaries.

Human serum transferrin is a mixture of isoforms (isoproteins) having different amounts of carbohydrates. Each isoform may exist in iron-fre … monoferric and differic complexes) can easily be identified. Both steps of isoelectric focusing in capillaries (i.e., prefocusing and mobilization) can be used for analysis. We observed that chelating agents (e.g., carrier ampholytes, nitrilotriacetate) may release iron from microsyringes having metal pistons causing the formation of iron-transferrin complex …

Capillary Wave-Assisted Colloidal Assembly.

The self-assembly of nanoparticle colloids into large-area monolayers with long-range order is a grand challenge in nanotechnology. Using acoustic energy, i.e., acoustic annealing, to improve the crystal quality of self-assembled colloidal monolayers is a new solution to this challenge, but the characterization of the capillary waves driving the annealing process is lacking. We use a laser Doppler vibrometer and optical diffraction to uncover the frequency-dependent effects of capillary waves on the real-time self-assembly of submicrometer diameter polystyrene nanospheres at an air-water inter

Targeted therapy for capillary-venous malformations.

Sporadic venous malformations are genetic conditions primarily caused by somatic gain-of-function mutation of PIK3CA or TEK, an endothelial transmembrane receptor signaling through PIK3CA. Venous malformations are associated with pain, bleedings, thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, esthetic deformities and, in severe cases, life-threatening situations. No authorized medical treatment exists for patients with venous malformations. Here, we created a genetic mouse model of PIK3CA-related capillary venous malformations that replicates patient phenotypes. We showed that these malformations only partia

Capillary Haemangioma of Gingiva - A Rare Lesion.

Capillary Haemangioma is a benign vascular tumour characterized by proliferation of blood vessels with a very striking similarity to pyogenic granuloma with a predilection to occur on the gingiva. Though the head and neck are the most common region of occurrence, but is considered to be rare occurring on the gingiva, intra-orally. The lesion clinically mimicked pyogenic granuloma but was histopathologically diagnosed as capillary haemangioma. It was surgically excised and followed up for 6 months without any recurrence.

Evaluation of Urine Proteins by Capillary Electrophoresis.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a laboratory method usually used to separate proteins in body fluids such as serum, cerebrospinal fluid, or urine. Separation of proteins in urine can have clinical applications for evaluating samples from healthy dogs and dogs with proteinuria in a qualitative way, which would not be possible with gel electrophoresis. Other advantages of CE over gel electrophoresis in serum include the reduced separation time (2 min vs. 20 min in a gel), reduction of waste harmful to humans and the environment, and ability to obtain a curve without the need for additional sta

[Cutaneous capillary malformations with cerebral implementation].

Capillary malformations - arteriovenous malformation, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia and Sturge-Weber syndrome - are rare diseases in which cutaneous capillary malformations (CM) may be associated with cerebral vascular malformations. The clinical presentation of each disease is described with focus on how to distinguish them in the clinic and differential diagnoses are listed. This review finds that upon thorough and careful examination of patients, cutaneous CM might be a diagnostic hallmark for underlying disease and therefore a significant clinical observation.
