A 20-year-old Japanese man with a mass in the left inguinal region underwent orchidectomy as a left testicular tumor was suspected. Primary germ cell tumours of the mediastinum are rare. We report a retrospective study of six cases. Sex ratio was 2/1. The tumor site was the posterior mediastinum in two patients and anterior in the remaining cases. High level serum markers was noted in two patients. We have conducted a phase II trial of cisplatinumdiamminodichloride (CPDD) which not only demonstrated its remarkable activity in embryonic carcinoma of the testes, but also in ovarian carcinoma, in melanoma, and in epidermoid carcinoma, especially of the head and of the uterus cervix. Its toxicity, manifested mainly in the digestive and renal tracts, confines its administration to hospitalized patients only. This compound is now indicated in combination therapy for the above-mentioned tumors.

Using the indirect immunoperoxidase method, alpha 1-fetoprotein (AFP) can be demonstrated in paraffin sections of tumours by light-microscopy. Among 160 tumour preparations it was demonstrated in five of six endodermal sinus tumors, 19 of 40 teratomas, the three hepatoblastomas and 9 of 16 primary liver-cell carcinomas.
