Diphyllobothriidea in the north area of the Andean Patagonia: Epidemiology in urban dogs, morphometrical and molecular identification, with comments on wild carnivores.

Diphyllobothriidea are the principal agents of Diphyllobothriosis, a widespread food-borne cestodosis. Accurate identification of the species in samples is therefore crucial for diagnosis and epidemiology in wild and domestic animals, and also humans. We aim to identify at specific level the causative agent, and provide an observational, descriptive, and transversal study of the epidemiology of this zoonosis in urban dogs. Also data on wild carnivores from Northwestern Patagonia are presented. Dog feces were collected in thirteen neighborhoods of varying socioeconomic status, and stools were a

Serologic survey of brucellosis in captive neotropical wild carnivores in northeast Brazil.

Abstract. This study reports the detection of antibodies against Brucella abortus and B. canis in wild neotropical carnivores kept in captivity in three zoos in northeastern Brazil. A total of 42 serum samples were examined, 17 from coatis (Nasua nasua), eight from crab-eating raccoons (Procyon cancrivorus), three from crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), three from hoary foxes (Lycalopex vetulus), two from little spotted cats (Leopardus tigrinus), five from tayras (Eira barbara), two from greater grisons (Galictis vittata), and two from neotropical river otters (Lontra longicaudis). The Rose-

Advances in reproductive science for wild carnivore conservation.

Knowledge about reproduction is critical for predicting the viability of wildlife populations in nature and for managing breeding programmes in captivity. Intensive species-based studies are the priority, because reproductive mechanisms are extraordinarily diverse, even within the same taxonomic family. Carnivores deserve more attention as such species are highly vulnerable to environmental change and human persecution. The present review provides contemporary illustrations of how reproductive science is contributing to understand unique reproductive mechanisms that are both of fundamental and

Preliminary tests of a new reversible male contraceptive in bush dog, Speothos venaticus: open-ended vasectomy and microscopic reversal.

Open-ended vasectomies were performed on four male bush dogs (Speothos venaticus), with three having microscopic reversal surgery (vasovasostomy) between 10 and 20 mo post-vasectomy. The key to ease of reversal is leaving the distal (testicular) end open to allow leakage, resulting in a pressure-relieving granuloma. The proximal (abdominal) end is cauterized, providing an effective seal. This technique prevents the buildup of pressure in the epididymis, therefore limiting damage to the male's reproductive capacity. Described here are detailed procedures for both surgeries. One of the three mal

Spermophagy in semen in the red wolf, Canis rufus.

The red wolf (Canis rufus) is an endangered species with 194 individuals remaining in the wild and in various captive facilities. Breeding efforts at the Graham, WA site (Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium) have involved artificial insemination with fresh or frozen semen in an effort to increase population and maximize the genetic potential of the stock. Electron microscopic observations were made in semen specimens obtained by electro-ejaculation from mature males prior to their use in an effort to determine semen parameters that might be useful in guiding breeding procedures. Sperm samples were

Changes in the frontal sinuses of the weasel (Mustela nivalis) in Poland possibly caused by nematodes or trematodes.

The presence of parasitic Nematodes was determined by visual assessment of damage to the 271 weasel skulls (154 males and 117 females). The damages were attributed to Skrjabingylus nasicola (Leuckart, 1842) or Troglotrema acutum (Leuckart, 1842) (on the basis of it's appearance and relevant papers). The frequency of infestation by both parasites was 38%. It was higher in females and also increased along with age. A significant dependence between skull length of adult specimens and infestation rate was found.

Surveillance and control of anthrax and rabies in wild herbivores and carnivores in Namibia.

Anthrax has been studied intensively in Etosha National Park, Namibia since 1966; in addition, since 1975, mortality due to rabies and all other causes has been recorded, totalling 6,190 deaths. Standard diagnostic procedures demonstrated that at least 811 deaths (13%) were due to anthrax and 115 deaths (2%) were caused by rabies. Of the total number of deaths due to anthrax, 97% occurred in zebra (Equus burchelli), elephant (Loxodonta africana), wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) while 96% of rabies deaths occurred in kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), jac

A comparison of the biomechanical properties of the periodontal ligaments of erupting and erupted teeth of non-continuous growth (ferret mandibular canines).

Extrusive loads of 0.01-0.2 N were applied to the permanent mandibular canine teeth of two groups of ferrets. In one group, aged approx. 7 weeks, the tooth had only recently emerged into the mouth. In the second group, comprising adult animals, the tooth had fully erupted and had been in function for a considerable time. Biphasic, viscoelastic-like responses followed both the application and removal of the load in both groups. However, there was significantly more mobility for all phases of the loading and recovery cycles in the erupting teeth. The data were compared with previous findings for

Trichinella spiralis in the black bear (Ursus americanus) of Pennsylvania: distribution, prevalence and intensity of infection.

Samples of tongue or diaphragm from 2,056 black bears harvested in Pennsylvania during the 1981-1983 hunting seasons were examined for larvae of Trichinella spiralis by peptic digestion. Sixteen males and 21 females were infected. The overall prevalence of infection was 1.8%. Infected animals were distributed widely throughout the range of the bear in Pennsylvania. In samples from infected bears, the geometric mean density of muscle larvae was 7.8 per g of tissue (LPG). There were neither sex- nor age-related differences in prevalence or intensity of infection. Virtually all bears harvested in

A demonstration of two distinct geniculocortical projection patterns in albino ferrets.

The geniculocortical pathways of albino ferrets have been studied by injecting lectin bound horseradish peroxidase into the visual cortex and then studying the geniculate distribution of retrogradely labelled cells in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. It has been shown that in ferrets, as in Siamese cats, there are two quite distinct patterns of geniculocortical projection. One of the patterns seen in ferrets is comparable to the 'Midwestern' pattern previously described in Siamese cats, while the other is comparable to the 'Boston' pattern.

Distribution of ganglion cells in the retina of adult pigmented ferret.

The retinal ganglion cell distribution in adult pigmented ferret was mapped in Nissl-stained retinas and in retinas back-filled with HRP after large bilateral injections of the enzyme into the brain. In common with other carnivores the ferret has an area of peak cell density equivalent to the area centralis and a prominent visual streak of high cell density extending horizontally across the retina. The maximum ganglion cell densities for the retinas were estimated to be 3500-5200 cells/mm2 in Nissl-stained, dehydrated retinas and 3300-4300 cells/mm2 in HRP-labelled, undehydrated retinas. Three

Notoedric mange in the bobcat, Felis rufus, from south Texas.

A fatal case of notoedric mange is described in an adult male bobcat, Felis rufus, from south Texas. This cat was extremely weak and emaciated. Skin lesions consisted of greatly thickened, gray encrustations and alopecia of the muzzle, eyes, crown, ears and parietal scalp extending down the neck to the midscapular region of the shoulders. Histologically, there was partial to complete excoriation of the stratum corneum with erosions into the stratum germinativum to the level of the dermis in some areas. Numerous specimens of Notoedres cati (Hering, 1838) were noted, usually in the stratum corne

Osteoarthrosis in a wolf (Canis lupus) radio-tracked in Minnesota.

Osteoarthrotic changes are described in the skeleton of an old wolf (Canis lupus) from Minnesota. Osteophyte formation appeared sufficient to restrict severely the range of motion of the joints. Despite this impairment the wolf ranged over 100 km2 and killed a minimum of one or two adult white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during a 6-week period between capture and death.
