Three adult cave-dwelling ground beetle species were induced to discharge secretions of their pygidial glands into vials. Dichloromethane extraction was used to obtain the secretions. In total, 42 compounds were identified by GC/MS analysis. Pheggomisetes ninae contained 32 glandular compounds, Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus 13, whereas Duvalius (Paraduvalius) milutini had nine compounds. Caproic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids were present in the samples of all analyzed species. Undecane was predominant in the extract of L. punctatus. Palmitic acid was the major component in the sec

A real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay was developed to detect and quantify Ochroconis lascauxensis in the Lascaux Cave in France … DNA extracted from five species of Ochroconis and 13 other fungal species frequently isolated from caves were used to test the specificity of each primer set. The specific and sensitive real-time PCR assay using the primers 347F/493R targeting a 147-bp fragment from the RPB2 gene was useful for quantifying the presence of O. lascauxensis in the stains …

A 27-year-old woman presented with headache and occasional numbness over her right face. Computed tomography revealed a hypodense mass in the middle cranial fossa and another adjacent hyperdense mass in the posterior fossa with erosion of the right petrous apex. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the lesion in the middle cranial fossa as iso- to hypointense on T(1)-weighted and hyperintense on T(2)-weighted imaging, with peripheral enhancement after gadolinium administration, and the adjacent lesion in the posterior fossa as hyperintense on T(1)-weighted and hypointense on T(2)-weighted imagi

BACKGROUND: We report on a patient with trigeminal neuralgia caused by an extraaxial cavernous malformation (CM) located within Meckel's cave. The lesion was removed via a pterional extradural approach with a modified temporalis muscle dissection technique, which was first described by Heros and Lee. Cadaveric dissections were performed to demonstrate the wider exposure gained by this approach.
METHODS: A 56-year-old man presented with a history of episodic shocklike, right-sided facial pain for 10 years. Neurologic examination revealed diminished sensation in the mandibular division of the r

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The "Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra" is an annual congregation in which the devotees trek a difficult route of around 40 km to reach to a cave at a height of approximately 14,000 feet at Pahalgam in the State of Jammu & Kashmir, India. These trekkers are subjected to stress and strain of the long mountainous route and difficult security scenario as a result of which they are prone to develop some surgical disorders. We ascertained the profile of non-traumatic surgical conditions met in these people at the various medical aid centres and the base hospital Pahalgam so that a pol

Visual pigments in the regressed eye and pineal of the depigmented neotenic urodele, the blind cave salamander (Proteus anguinus anguinus), were studied by immunocytochemistry with anti-opsin antibodies. The study included light- and electron-microscopic investigations of both the eye and the pineal organ. A comparison was made with the black pigmented subspecies Proteus anguinus parkelj (black proteus), which has a normal eye structure. In the retina of the black proteus, we found principal rods, red-sensitive cones and a third photoreceptor type, which might represent a blue- or UV-sensitive

Vital staining and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the morphology of superficial neuromasts in the blind cave fish, Astyanax hubbsi, and its sighted congener, Astyanax mexicanus. In blind Astyanax the neuromasts are 80 X 50 microns in size and possess cupulae with an oval basal shape. The length of the cupula is correlated to the location of its neuromast. Head neuromasts were found to have the longest cupulae (up to 300 microns), and caudal neuromasts have the smallest. Cupulae of all lengths have been observed to be easily bent by water movements. The neuromasts are direction

Understanding how niche-based and neutral processes shape biological communities is a central objective in ecology, particularly in extreme and poorly explored environments such as large subterranean systems. Here, we investigated the mechanisms structuring terrestrial invertebrate communities in the one of the most extensive and voluminous cave systems in South America. Sampling across 56 sectors (30 m²) and 168 quadrats (1 m²) revealed 123 terrestrial invertebrate species. Complementary intuitive searches conducted throughout the cave, combined with standardized sampling, indicated that the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) with concomitant continuous pain constitute a challenging population to treat. Lesioning procedures are associated with high rates of neuropathic pain deterioration. Meckel's cave methylprednisolone/bupivacaine injections may afford pain control in this subset of patients with low rates of neuropathic pain deterioration. Our aim was to identify predictors of pain response after methylprednisolone/bupivacaine injections in patients with medically refractory TN with concomitant continuous pain.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis

We present evidence from Üçağızlı II Cave in the northern Levant, Türkiye, documenting the sequential occupation by Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis; 77-59 ka) and modern humans (Homo sapiens; 59-47 ka). The combined evidence of human fossils, faunal and floral remains, lithics, and manuports demonstrates significant behavioral and technological continuity across this taxonomic sequence, characterized by consistent subsistence strategies and the persistent selection and transport of specific nondietary mollusk shells. The lithic assemblages largely align with late Middle Paleolithic traditi

Twenty-seven Pachycrocuta brevirostris coprolites from Taurida Cave (Early Pleistocene) were studied. Eggs of parasitic worms were found in 6 of them (22.2%). Eggs of Trematoda species were identified among them, as were eggs of Taenia, Toxocara, and Capillaria. Toxocara eggs were the most common; they were found in 15% of the coprolites. This is the earliest evidence of P. brevirostris infection by these groups of helminths.

BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation-mediated epilepsy has become a focus of attention in recent years. Post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) is common, with most studies focusing on ischemic stroke rather than intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients. Therefore, we aimed to determine the association between monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) levels and epilepsy after ICH. Additionally, we sought to develop a clinical score integrating MLR with the CAVE score to improve the risk stratification of PSE.
METHODS: We retrospectively included consecutive ICH patients from January 2010 to July 2020. MLR was acquired

OBJECTIVE: The anterior transpetrosal approach (ATPA) is an effective method to reach lesions in the petroclival region. This approach involves many steps, including superior petrosal sinus (SPS) ligation and tentorial cutting. It is sometimes unnecessary to perform all procedures in the ATPA for certain lesions, especially those centered in the Meckel's cave. Here, we present a simplified anterior transpetrosal approach (SATPA) without superior petrosal sinus and tentorial incision for lesions centered in the Meckel's cave as a modified ATPA.
METHODS: This study included 13 patients treated

The emergence of Homo sapiens in Pleistocene Africa is associated with a profound reconfiguration of technology. Symbolic expression and personal ornamentation, new tool forms, and regional technological traditions are widely recognized as the earliest indicators of complex culture and cognition in humans. Here we describe a bone tool tradition from Contrebandiers Cave on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, dated between 120,000-90,000 years ago. The bone tools were produced for different activities, including likely leather and fur working, and were found in association with carnivore remains that

Trigeminal schwannoma is the second most common schwannoma after vestibular schwannoma. Symptoms vary depending on the anatomical structures affected by the tumor, including facial pain, paresthesia, dizziness and ataxia. The primary goals are controlling the symptoms and the maintenance of cranial nerves' integrity perioperatively. We report a 39-year-old lady who was complaining of mild right-sided headache, vision and hearing loss, right facial weakness and dysphagia. CT and MRI showed a large dumbbell-shaped tumor originating from the trigeminal fossa abutting the petrous and cavernous car
